Linda’s sister Shirley was marrying Trevor at his hometwon in Northern Ireland. She had met Trevor while he was attending seminary in the U.S. To get to the wedding we bought a two week Eurailpass and took the train from Stuttgart to Paris where we met up Linda’s mom and sister Shirley. We toured Paris for a couple days, seeing everything between the Notre Dame and Louvre and the Eifel Tower. We then took the train to Cherbourg where we caught the ferry to Rosslare, Ireland. The crossing was only supposed to be 17 hours overnight, but due to the heavy seas it took 24 hours. I did not do well. Linda said my face was green the whole trip, which I spent in my bunk. I have seafaring heritage in my ancestry. My great grandfather ... read more

We have just returned from our holiday in Europe I thought I would upload some photos of my 1975 trip to Europe as well What surprised me was the photo of myself standing outside 10 Downing Street the official residence of the Prime Minister. In 1975 I was able to have my photo taken standing on the doortsep but in 2007 the area is bounded by a large security fence and police guards. Times really have changed In 2007 all we could do was to look through a high security fence... read more

Following the fall of Vietnam, Cambodia and Laos to the communists in April 1975, I was allowed to take home leave even though my job was going to end by December 1975. We left Chiang Mai fully expecting to return for at least six months. Our plan was to take three weeks home leave with Linda’s family in Pennsylvania and my family who was still on furlough in New York, and then take annual leave for two weeks in Great Britain on our way back to Thailand. However, while in the States I was offered my choice of five jobs. I accepted the one at the headquarters of the Naval Facilities Engineering Command in Alexandria, Virginia. They wanted me to start right away. I explained that I needed to return to Thailand to pack up our ... read more

It was a late rise the morning after the rush trip back from Africa but the sleep was really needed. Back at the flat at Hammersmith again, we had a really civilised breakfast of porridge, followed by bacon and eggs. I rang Ruth and made arrangements for Joan and I to drop up to Hatfield in the afternoon to catch up with them again before I flew home. We reached Hatfield by mid-afternoon and just relaxed and chatted with Peter and Ruth for most of the afternoon as it was getting pretty cold by then. We went up to check out their new house, which was set in a fabulous rural setting (even with cows outside the kitchen window!) but it looked very expensive. We returned to London by 8pm and picked up a frozen pizza ... read more

Following Roy’s Gay Hat Party, I was certainly not feeling too flash when woken next morning around 9am. I was out on the road soon after with a lift from Mary, but I didn’t manage to get a hitch until an hour later. I then got a lucky run of around 200 miles down the A1, with the day also turning out warm and sunny. However, my luck ran out after that, and after reaching Stamford, some 60 miles east of Warwick by 1pm, it took until almost 7pm before I finally made it back to Stratford, comprising some 8 lifts, numerous walks through cities like Coventry and Leicester, and frustrating and cold waits in the countryside. But those are the vagaries of hitchhiking! I was finally picked up by Jenny and Ro at Southam, some ... read more

Back in London again and sponging accommodation off the Canberra nurses in Hammersmith, the first task for the day to renew the rego on the Kombi, which we did with no problems. I then caught up with cousin Peter for lunch before making my way over to the Chelsea apartment of a good friend from Sydney, Janie. I chatted with her and her flatmate Annie before we adjourned to the pub for several jars. We then decided to hit a flash joint on Kings Road for dinner. It turned out to be its premiere night, with good food, much hilarity, and free sherry and cognac to celebrate. The downside was the exorbitant bill around the 10 pound mark. Through a cause unknown, I managed to break my watch during the night’s activities. After the night out, ... read more

I was met on arrival at the Sundowner’s base in London by my Sydney girlfriend Sue and we hung around for about an hour, lining up accommodation, collecting letters and luggage, and saying my various goodbyes to all my fellow travellers of the last 80 days. We then booked into the Hotel Trianon in Earls Court (where else would an Aussie backpacker go?!) at a very moderate GBP5 per night B&B for a good room with its own facilities. That afternoon, we went into Piccadilly Circus to check it out and ended up taking a 90 minute tour of London (75p) on a double decker, giving us the full transport treatment of cab, metro and d-d bus all on the first day. We saw all the main sights of London and got orientated, so it was ... read more
