So where in the world is Gabby? Our girl is parked up in a car park outside Tintern Abbey or Abaty Tyndyrn in the Welsh language. Storm Eric has left us and we now are in the grip of Storm Freya. Spring has arrived. Well in some places there are signs of Spring. The clocks have not changed yet. We have another week of meteorogical winter to suffer before the sun moves into its summer phase. The primroses and daffodils look pretty as they line the roads. Yellow everywhere you look. The Hawthorn are bright fresh green as their leaves are opening So too are the Blackthorn bushes which are covered in frothy white flowers. However. the down side is that the rain falls . Quite heavily at time and it is extremely cold. We drive ... read more

Geo: 51.6999, -2.69966 We were beat from Thursday's excursion to Bath and decided that instead of exploring the Cotswolds (quaint, quintessential English villages about 50 miles away) we would rest and relax and stay closer to home. So we slept late, and then Charles, our host, showed us around his wonderful English garden. I'm so jealous of all the different plants he can grow that we can't grow in our dry and alkaline Texas soil (like peonies). So we decided to pop over to Wales - just 10 miles away, even though visiting Wales was not on our itinerary. We drove down the beautiful Wye River Valley, which divides England and Wales. All the signs are in Welsh first, with English below. We had lunch in Monmouth, a quaint village, and it was interesting to hear the ... read more

Useless & Colin Buckle Up So, holiday season begins, and ‘The Duke’ had his first lengthy road trip - culminating in a ferry crossing to a whole other country (or 2). Hitchhiking along for the ride was Colin the Clanger. Col has some travelling experience but ostensibly this was gonna be his ‘trip of a lifetime.’ So, to ensure Colin didn’t ‘peak too soon’ we eased our way into the trip with a nice visit to the local vets. Colin said goodbye to Useless and then was warned about what happens to naughty Clangers with a visit to one of Leonard Brother’s cells. After several minutes of clanger crying it became apparent that the message had got through and we were ready for the road. In keeping with the ‘ease him in gently approach’ we headed ... read more

Hiya Everyone Today we headed off nice and early from the hotel so we could get a bit of travelling done. We was all packed and breakfasted (is that a word?) by 7.30am and headed of to Stonehenge. We made better time than we thought, so hung around in the village of Amesbury for an hour until the rocks opened. What a lovely little village. The pub was opened in the 16th century, and all of the doors leading into the shops around the place were so low that I nearly had to duck to get through them! We went to the stones and had an audio tour around them. What a great place. The history is all speculation, they don't really know how they got there or what their purpose was but the amount of ... read more

Or something like that. Basically, I went to a couple falling-down places in Wales, and Welsh has lots of consonants, etc. And now I'm done trying to be clever. At least I didn't got to Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch, which is an actual town in Wales that has the proud distinction of having the longest name of any town in Britain. Supposedly, it translates as: "Saint Mary's Church in the hollow of the white hazel near a rapid whirlpool and the Church of Saint Tysilio of the red cave." Anyway. Moving on to what I actually did and saw. On the Sunday of the August Bank Holiday, two friends (Jen and Jaime) and I took the scenic drive to Chepstow along lots of curvy roads that lined the Severn River. As soon as we arrived at Chepstow Castle, though, ... read more

After Chepstow, we turned inland to visit the famous Tintern Abbey. When I heard the name, it sounded familiar, but I didn't realize why... until I found out that it features in a poem by Wordsworth, which I was forced to read junior year of high school. Though I'm not one to spout poetry, it truly was a beautiful sight, especially on such a bright and sunny day. But first, the car boot sale in the shadow of the abbey. Ahhh. That vaulted and established British tradition. Take one car, stuff it with junk, drive to the nearest racecourse or other suitable field, set up a table, and proffer your wares. I turned up a couple books, a CD by Sarah Vaughan, and many, many cheap DVDs. It was like being in Russia again, but these ... read more
