Hi Everyone, So finally some news from me! I thought I would kick off the new year with a different (and hopefully more effective) approach to keeping in touch with you all, so I decided to start a travelblog site. This way you can keep up with me at your leisure and I can post photos and not clog up your inboxes! Also, given it's a blog site, I feel I can write as much as I want, more like a diary entry rather than an e-mail, and not feel guilty about boring you all to tears!! So anyway, I hope you enjoy... I hope this finds you all well and happy at the beginning of 2006. My year is off to a great start, largely the result of my wonderful holiday in Scotland! What did ... read more

Hello everyone, This will probably be my last blog entry, and this is the first time I've actually had any time to do this. First of all, apologies to all of you who have e-mailed me and had no reply - had no access when I was in the USA. Now finding time to catch up with the 300+ e-mails in my inbox. You will have gathered that we also had limited access to e-mail when Vicki and I were travelling - what an amazing experience it was though. Have now attached some photos of (what were for me) the highlights of that time. Hope that you like them. Must say that the most amazing part of the trip was definitely Machu Picchu. It's almost something spiritual when you see it. Lake Titicaca was also very ... read more

Rebecca has smuggled me into the Dundee U computer lab so we can check our e-mail for the first time in over a week. And what a week it has been... We arrived in Scotland stressed and tired. We made our series of trains, flights, and buses all within minutes of departure. Yes, we are certainly being divinely looked after. Rebecca had arranged for us to stay with the family of one of her Scottish friends throughout the Hogmanay festivities. So, for the first time during my journey I arrived at a the doorstep of a real home. In a real neighborhood. With a real family. The Youngs immediately helped us with our bags and poured us glasses of wine. In fact, they literally "wined and dined" us for the entire duration of our stay. Gorgeous ... read more

Hi everyone, After digesting all the food we ate over Christmas, we decided to drive up to see Edinburgh which is only a 4 hour drive from Knutsford (...if you don't stop....). We made several detours on the way and came across some heavy snow, especially when we went through the North Pennines (small mountains and forest), so it was a slower trip than hoped. Especially when we hit roads that had not been gritted or salted….Wes’ great shortcut!!! The reason for the detour was to stop at Housestead’s Roman Fort, the most preserved Roman Fort along Hadrian’s Wall which the Romans built during their occupation of England. It snowed like crazy and we walked around in -2 degrees. Next stop was the England/Scotland border and Jedburgh Abbey in Scotland. We finally reached Edinburgh and booked ... read more

Ed: Well another trip another early start. We had planned for an early night in our one day of rest between Paris and Edinburgh, but Bec and Ben ended up coming over for dinner. And so after eating, chatting and a bottle of wine, that idea went out the window! I’m proud to say that we at least got all the laundry done amongst it all, even if it was a rush job to pack the suitcase yet again! We’d bought a roast chicken to make chicken and mayo sandwiches for the long train trip the next day (must take advantage to make as many chicken and mayo sandwiches while Chris is too far away to throw them out while I’m not looking!), but by the time we finished packing we were too tired so the ... read more

2nd and 3rd January 2006 Edinburgh, Scotland. Suspicions of having acquired a cold were confirmed as much of today was spent in the same cotton-headed, aching fog of yesterday, for surely no hangover ever lasted this long, and the sniffling has been increasing by the hour. I had planned on spending the two days following Hogmanay in a variety of activities - ice skating, walking again along Arthur's Seat, finally visiting the inside of the castle regardless of jaded reviews, catching a day train down to Gretna Green, and so forth - but have been dismayingly lacking the energy or initiative to follow through. My only two achievements, as such, were to ride the ferris wheel on Princes St and to keep a meeting with an old friend-stroke-mentor, Scotsman, and fellow traveler from Cairns. He was ... read more
