Ed: Well another trip another early start. We had planned for an early night in our one day of rest between Paris and Edinburgh, but Bec and Ben ended up coming over for dinner. And so after eating, chatting and a bottle of wine, that idea went out the window! I’m proud to say that we at least got all the laundry done amongst it all, even if it was a rush job to pack the suitcase yet again! We’d bought a roast chicken to make chicken and mayo sandwiches for the long train trip the next day (must take advantage to make as many chicken and mayo sandwiches while Chris is too far away to throw them out while I’m not looking!), but by the time we finished packing we were too tired so the ... read more

2nd and 3rd January 2006 Edinburgh, Scotland. Suspicions of having acquired a cold were confirmed as much of today was spent in the same cotton-headed, aching fog of yesterday, for surely no hangover ever lasted this long, and the sniffling has been increasing by the hour. I had planned on spending the two days following Hogmanay in a variety of activities - ice skating, walking again along Arthur's Seat, finally visiting the inside of the castle regardless of jaded reviews, catching a day train down to Gretna Green, and so forth - but have been dismayingly lacking the energy or initiative to follow through. My only two achievements, as such, were to ride the ferris wheel on Princes St and to keep a meeting with an old friend-stroke-mentor, Scotsman, and fellow traveler from Cairns. He was ... read more

Prove it! Have a look then (females only!!) We (me chuggers, doug & sandy) finally left home to drive down to Edinburgh bout lunch time. New Years Eve in Scotland is notorious around here. In fact all my aussie and NZ workmates, and about 90% of OE'ers that I know in general were heading off to Scotland. So I decided to go and see what all the fuss was about, and catch up with Gaynor who lives in Edinburgh. Hognamay is a Street party, and to be honest that does sound a little odd to have in Scotland where it is ridiculously cold. I am still not convinced that it is the best idea ever. However armed with my party pack I was willing to don thermals, and head out into the cold for the party. I stayed with Gaynor at her flat, and was amazed and impressed to look outside and see green hill's in the distance! It made me ... read more

31st December 2006 Edinburgh, Scotland. I spent the morning flicking through tattoo catalogues and internet sites for a design that I loved enough to have imprinted upon me and could get the tattoist to agree to. By the appointed time I was out of ideas, but he had taken note of my suggestions and reasons and had drawn up a deceptively simple celtic-style butterfly design. It wasn't the answer to all my dreams or anything, but I liked it and thought I could live with it, so I reluctantly agreed to a size somewhat bigger than I'd envisioned (had hoped for miniscule, really) and negotiated the placement of it. The next thing I knew I was laid out flat on a surgical table, staring up at a picture of the god Krishna, of all things. I ... read more

30th December 2005 Edinburgh, Scotland. It was well into the afternoon before I awoke, and when I did it was to a world without snow. There was no sign of it and nobody I asked had seen any. Nor would it snow again within the duration of my time here, though I had assumed that the city would be covered in it by now. Strange, the twists of fate (or delayed airplanes), and the blessings sometimes hidden within misfortune. I reunited with some old 'travel buddies', made a few new ones, organised to rendezvous later and go to the Night Afore Party together, and then wandered off alone with a list of tattoo parlors and a mission: find somewhere clean, safe and talented to brand me with a tattoo on New Year's Day. Now, contrary to ... read more

Edinburgh, Scotland 28th December - 2nd January Hogmany Hogmany is the name of the New Year festivities that occur in Edinburgh, Scotland every year. It is a huge event and we had to book our tickets and accommodation well in advance. Torch Parade A massive procession of torch lights/fire sticks through the streets of Edinburgh and finishing at the top of Carlton Hill. The procession of which we were a part of followed a wooden vikings ship and bag pipe players. When we reached the top of Carlton Hill the vikings ship was set alight creating a very warm fire for us to enjoy! It was somewhat of a fire and safety hazard with thousands of people walking in very close proximity to one another with fire sticks! Met up with Emily Hooke from Apollo Bay ... read more

It was like having christmas with the army... or an orphanage... or a mental institution! At ten O'clock in the morning - as ungodly an hour as there ever was - the fire alarm went off so that everyone would wake up and congregate in the main lounge. Everyone had begun to wonder why no mail had been coming in for the past couple of weeks, but as we arranged our many selves around the tree, it became quite clear with all of the battered-looking, air-mailed packages piled up around it that it'd been held hostage. Even the usually-surly night porter grinned like a little kid as he unwrapped his 'Secret Santa' gift of "The Jumbo Book of Dot-To-Dot Pictures"! Ash, Alaya and I nominated ourselves to be Santa's (a.k.a Crazy Polish Chef) little helpers in ... read more
