Sunday, 17 July 2022, Fort William to Spean Bridge. Day 1 on the Great Glen Way which entails 77 miles to Inverness. Today 12.5 miles, 260 feet elevation gain 5 hours 52 minutes walking. Our two rest days in Fort William were most relaxing. The lovely ladies; Dora, Jean and Margareta at the Myrtle Bank Guest House B&B were the perfect combination of hospitality, great food, and wonderful friendliness. Fort William is situated in Lochaber region of the West Highlands under the Inverness-shire region in Travelblog. We will let Karen has filled in the adventures for the two days we spend in and around Fort William in the Blog with that title. As for the start of the Great Glen Way, we left the far western end of Fort William and walked east a mile to ... read more

Ah, Ben Nevis! The magic of conquering the highest peak in the UK has lasted one day! Now that feeling has been utterly eliminated! I was happy taking just over 7 hours for the up and down, some runner did it in 70 minutes today! It was the annual Ben Nevis race and this guy has won the events for 8 consecutive years. We picked up a hitch hiker today who had competed in the event and he had the time of just over 90 minutes so my day's hike was sounding very, very average. He did look a bit stiff and weary and he was thankful for the lift but he had just run up and down Ben Nevis! It's compulsory to take gloves, a hat and a coat (last year the temp at the ... read more

Lots of photos (42 I think) today. Some will be embedded into the text as that's the way this app works. The rest will be accessible via a button below the text. Today its worth looking at the photos. They will either convince you to go walk/climb Ben Nevis or convince you not to walk/climb Ben Nevis. It's almost 8 hours of walking, surprisingly almost as long descending as ascending for me. I know I walk fastear uphill and slower downhill relative to others but it become pretty apparent today. My knee gave me a little concern on the downhill section (that's everything after reaching the summit!) so that didn't help but generally the walk is really good. It is busy. The uncommonly good weather and the fact that there is a race up and down ... read more

We entered the highland capital of Fort William thinking it might be a good place to stay.....we were wrong! As we we entered town every single B&B (and there were many of them) had a 'no vacancies' sign out the front. Getting closer to the centre of town it was not hard to understand why. What seemed like hundreds upon hundreds of walkers were out in force. The reason was the rather imposing 'Ben Nevis' a summit some 1344 m high that bought walkers from all over (so it seemed). 'Walking' is quite the popular pastime in the UK, and as with any sport it can be heavily accessorised. First there is the walking jacket (must be goretex and shapeless), then the walking boots (big and ugly), some walking pants (lightweight, unflattering), walking daypack (garishly coloured), ... read more
