We got up early this morning - before our alarm at 7am, to walk to the bus stop. It had been raining all night and was still raining when we woke up. But i slept pretty good - except everytime i woke up i was sweaty because it was so warm in our little room. This morning i also discovered a blister on my right foot. The bus came at 8am and we left for the Cliffs of Moher. It was really beautiful, but very windy and cold. We walked up a path and looked around for a bit. Unfortunately we were stuck sitting in a small cafe (in the small visitor's center) until 1pm when our bus to Limerick would arrive. We played a lot of cards and drank hot tea. Once we got to ... read more

April 12th 2005........late, late in the day. Belfast, Northern Ireland. Yes, I'm in Northern Ireland now, but that can wait until the next journal. Much more interesting is the Magic Mushroom story. Scott threw in his lot with me and we ended up doing the magic mushrooms together last night in the common room with an audience. The mushies, which were meant to induce a general happiness and giggles, etc, were really gross and had to be followed with shots of Lucozade and then vodka......really yummy pineapple and raspberry vodka, with, get this, 20% alcohol!! How cool! Scott, who was by now not so enthusiastic with the idea, engineered it so that I ended up eating more mushies than him, but that was okay, as I'd paid for them. (Wimp, haha). So anyway, we took off ... read more

Hey, folks-- Belfast was great! I was up there Saturday through Monday and then the Guinness Factory in Dublin on Monday afternoon. Rachel's here, and we've been seeing the sights around Limerick. Today, we also went hiking in Killarney, which was very rainy, though. This is extra short because I still have to pack for my Dublin-London-Rome trip which commences tomorrow. So, I plan to give a giant update when I return next Monday (the 11th). Otherwise, everyone have a great week! Oh, yeah, and I got two new Spanish flatmates! Fun fun! They seem nice, but we'll see how we all get along for real after my trip!... read more

Well, the schoolwork is finally heating up, and I'm currently trying to finish a paper for my Contemporary Irish Writing in English course before I head off to London and Rome next week. But, of course, I want to take time out of my busier-than-a-few-weeks-ago schedule to post an update on the previous week/weekend's adventures! Like I mentioned in my previous entry, on Saturday I went to Waterford on the Southeast coast of Ireland with Rose and Sara (from USC). Liz (who went with us to Doolin) came along as well. I actually almost missed the 10:30 bus taking us there because the city buses that run from Castletroy (the suburb I'm in) to the city centre were running behind, but I jumped on the bus to Waterford about 3 minutes before it took off-- phew! ... read more

I have officially survived an Irish St. Patrick's Day celebration, and what a day it was! First of all, it's a national holiday, so no classes-- awesome! Second of all, I got to spend the whole day with Irish students (and one American), which was totally awesome, too! But, before I get into details on the funness here in Limerick, let me tell you about last weekend. Last weekend, I went to Clare Glens and Killaloe with the International Society. Several people I knew went, including my former flatmate Oscar and my French friend Audrey. Also, Rose, Sara (USC girls), Laura, and Liz went, all of whom I went to Doolin with. First, we went to Clare Glens, which has an absolutely gorgeous nature trail! Everything was so lush--it was terrific! Even with the 50 or ... read more

Living in the Southeast US for the past several years, I've almost forgotten what a glorious experience it is to traverse from the chilled grasp of winter to the wonder that is springtime. Here, though, I am able to experience that sensation again. Now, the flowers are just starting to bloom here, temperatures are rising ever-so-slowly, and the smell of spring is in the air. Yes, I stepped out the door on Sunday afternoon, the sun shining mildly upon me, took a deep breath and knew for certain that spring was on its way. And I love it! Well, besides these visions of spring (I can't wait for everything to come into bloom!), I've done some more traveling since my last update. Nothing too far or too expensive, but I went to Adare with my French ... read more

This weekend, I went to the town of Doolin (about a 1.5 hour bus ride from Limerick) with four other American girls (two of which are from USC). My original plan for the weekend had been to go to Adare (about 25 minutes from Limerick) for a day trip, but when the opportunity arose to go to a traditional music festival in Doolin AND see the Cliffs of Moher, I couldn't pass it up. Doolin is a small town with more pubs and hostels than anything else, but it was quite a fun place to spend a weekend. We went up there early on Saturday and got up there in just enough time to explore the pier and go to a 3-hour long traditional Irish music concert. That was quite a long time to sit, but ... read more

I'd wanted to wait until I could upload all my photos before posting an update on my Galway trip, but the digital photography gods seem to have it in for me. I finally managed to upload all my digital pics onto my roommate Oscar's laptop-- yay for nice roommates!--but somehow, I only managed to burn ONE of them to CD before merrily heading into campus. Only when I inserted the CD into the computer lab computer did I realize my folly. By that point, my roommate and his laptop were elsewhere. So, for now, the ONE picture I've added on a previous entry will have to suffice, as well as a vow to add more later. As for my Galway trip, as the pictures shall soon show you, it was loads of fun! There were ten ... read more

Yes, my semester has finally begun after quite a long winter break. I've tried out a few classes so far, and so many are so interesting, it's hard to choose! I really would like to get a three-day weekend for traveling purposes, but that would mean I'd have to drop one of the two courses I'm looking most forward to-- Contemporary Irish Lit in English or European Cinema! What to do, what to do? I might even drop down to taking 12 hours of credit since I can swing that and still graduate on time, but I just don't know what to do! Hopefully I'll figure it all by this weekend, after which I'll have to start making decisions! So far, my favorite classes have been the lit class mentioned above (the Cinema class is only ... read more

With this weekend, I have successfully began my adventures of exploring the world beyond Limerick! I promised my Dad before I left that I would travel every weekend, so as this weekend approached, I tried to brainstorm up a daytrip for Saturday that wouldn't be too expensive or too troublesome for a solo traveler. Thus, I woke up yesterday morning, donned one of the few outfits I had room to pack, and headed on a bus trip to Ennis, which is about a 45-minute bus ride from here. Ennis is a mid-sized town almost centered between Limerick and Galway. I enjoyed my day there, exploring the quaint shops and winding streets. It was quite busy because there was a hurling game yesterday at a pitch (playing field) nearby. Everyone was decked out in their team's colors, ... read more
