July 23rd 2005 Bayswater, London, England. Guess where I was on Thursday the 21st, when the second (attempted) terrorist bombings took place in London? About thirty metres away from the Shepherd's Bush tube station, scene of a failed bomb detonation!! I swear it's true, my hand to god. I have just spent the last three days on a weekend break in London. And damned if I'm not more exhausted than when the break began! I didn't arrive at London Waterloo station until after noon on the 21st, having found it hard to have faith in my replacement and drag myself away from the job - yeah, I know, I'm completely hopeless. The London tubes were still in a complete mess from the successfull bombings two weeks ago, so the closest I could get to Bayswater was ... read more

Dear reader, Here is a guest blog written by my sister, Pam. While visiting us in Germany, she took a side trip to England for a few days. Enjoy! Globetrekkingmama Birthday: In which Pam spends nine hours in the airport, is attacked by overzealous yeast, and chokes on fish bones. Even though my flight isn’t till 1:00, I wake up early on my birthday (Bastille Day) to catch the bus at 7:10. All later buses will arrive too late at Frankfurt-Hahn for me to catch my plane. So I arrive at the airport around 8:30 and soon discover my flight won’t depart till past 5:00. I do different things to pass the time: flirt with a little tow-headed boy (who proves a rather persistent suitor), listen to a book on tape (till I can no longer ... read more

Oh dear, I've been a bit slack with my entries but there hasn't been much happening other than trying to find somewhere to live, find a job & now that I have a job I'm busy with that. Both Princess Sparkle & I have met lots of people & made lots of friends. Been checking out the local social activities which mainly revolve around pubs. Been to a couple of plays. Not anything exciting. I will update this next week with photos and some more interesting stuff. Princess Sparkle & I are playing rounders this afternoon. I always thought it was a game for primary school kids but obviously I was wrong. I will let you know the outcome of that & hopefully have some great photos of Princess Sparkle in action. All the best everyone. ... read more

I found myself awake and buying a day pass for the Underground at 8:30am, for £8 (it would have been £6 if bought after 9:30am). Without a plan, I hopped on and off the tube all day and walked around in different areas, only one of which was a tourist attraction. Kensington Palace Gardens. I didn't bother to go in and see Princess Diana's Dress Collection as I couldn't care less... I took pictures (coming soon) of the most random buildings. Lunch was at a dark pub with wooden tables and booths and plasma TVs, where I got to listen into a conversation of two locals about sports. more later.... sorry... read more

I'm finally employed in the UK for the Enfield Primary Care Trust!!! (This is a different place than I originally thought. Leeds did not have any positions open, nor did most of northern England.) It's all very recent and unofficial at this point. I was supposed to have an interview on Friday morning and it was rescheduled as we called overseas since the interviewer was on her way to the emergency room. She had done who knows what to her arm--possibly a torn tendon or something similar. It was yet another roadblock in my journey abroad, but I went home to Ohio for the weekend and did not really worry about it. Literally, as I was packing my car Monday morning, I got the call that the pediatric speech and language therapy manager was ready to ... read more

Well here I am, sitting infront of my computer in good old Blighty wondering what the hell ive let myself in for. The biggest adventure of my life is due to begin in a week and im suddenly feeling utterly unprepared. South America beckons and i suddenly cant remember basic basic Spanish. At least ive finally got myself a backpack and all that, so i can concentrate my panic on the actual trip, the teaching, the travelling, the catching the bloody flights...So this is me just starting the whole thing off. The next entry will be god knows where, probably in Buenos Aires. I feel like a rabbit caught in headlights. Or perhaps a squirrel (that ones for u, Al). So heres to the unknown, wish me well and i'll see you all on the other ... read more

I guess the really great thing about London is that you can run into red-carpet movie premieres while you're just wandering around looking for a cafe. In my case, the European premiere of Charlie and The Chocolate Factory. The crazed fans weren't in a line, they were just a huge mass of people waiting to get let in, and so somehow when the police did let everyone in to the red carpet area, I actually ended up in the front row. Which is an awesome place to be for pictures and autographs, but maybe not so awesome health-wise, with everyone shoving all the time. The girls next to me were really smart and methodical (and a little insane) about the whole thing. They had a sign that said "Please sign for us" that was on a ... read more
