Well I had a good flight through to London and was ready to leave Egypt at this stage anyways. I arrived in London to be greeted by their perfect weather - a lovely summers day pouring with rain!!! I collected my bags and headed towards the doors after clearing customs, concentrating on thinking about what I had to do and finding an information desk to check which tube stations were open after the recent bombings, so that I could make my way to Matt & Vicky's house. I walked out of the doors and saw Vicky and Matt standing there with my name on a sign with a picture of Australia on it!!!! I've never been so happy in my life!!! It was a great surprise and very appreciated!! I hadn't been looking forward to finding ... read more

This is being done in retrospect as we did not have the cob-on to do things like this before we left!! We left from East Midlands airport going to Prague. This flight was the only thing we had booked before leaving. Other preparation we had done inc all relevant jabs, saving up money, buying the lonely planets (though not really reading them!), Belarus, Russia, Mongolia and Chinese visas (which were a pain in the arse), photocopying everything, buying a bag, sandals, medi kit, raincoat, sewing kit (?) and that was about it!! To say we were both nervous in the weeks running up to it would be an understatement, we'd given up our flat and jobs and we were kind of thinking that a hop-on-and-off plane ticket might have been nice, as the only place we ... read more

Okay, so have spent a bit of time in London, taking a break from travelling. I've also went to a couple of places for a few days. (See my other entries , and ) I have to admit the weather is not the greatest, and I'm here in mid summer. They call a weekend when the temperatures in the high 20s a heatwave! About 50% of the time I have been here it has been grey and overcast and only moderately warm. (It was much nicer in Kent and in Wales.) When it is hot, it is horribly humid. The other bad stuff about London is that generally it is dirty, overcrowded, polluted, with a pretty bad transport system. However you have to look on the plus side. London is an amazing place, multicultural (the world ... read more

Five days in the South Western English county of Cornwall After 5 hours+ in the car, we finally arrived in Perrenporth, picked up the key to our accommodation and dumped our bags. Perrenporth is a small seaside town on the north coast of Cornwall close to Newquay with a beach area, rocky cliffs, surfing and the other usual seaside pleasures. Unlike other coastal towns, it's small size and lack of fame makes it less crowded. However, a car is needed if you are going to visit the other famous sites in Cornwall. Our first evening was spent taking a walk around the town, seeing the sundial (set at Cornish time) and eating traditional fish and chips, nothing can beat fresh cod caught the same morning! After a much needed night's sleep, it was back in the ... read more

If you want to get away from London for a few days then I would say that Canterbury in Kent is the ideal place to go. Sure it's crowded with tourists, but so is London and here things seem less hectic. Canterbury had everything you would expect of England: Roman History Castle Cathedral which forms part of a World Heritage Site, (Canterbury was the cradle of the re-introduction of Christianity to Britain), aside from the Cathedral there are two other parts of the World Heritage Site, St Martin's Church and St Augustine's Abbey. Links to famous literature and authors: Marlowe, Conrad, Dickens, Chaucer, ... Also went to Whitstable, which is a small town on the Kentish Coast. Unfortunately the beach is made of stones not sand, so not really conducive to lying about in the sun, ... read more

So after my trip to Spain with my parents, it was back home for 2 weeks. I have so much stuff to sort out still before I make the big leap on the 1st of August. First of all, the first test of the ashes needs to take place.... I arrived in London Wednesday afternoon, the day before the match starts. Even though I only live 50 miles away from London, I want to get to the Cricket before the first ball is bowled at 10.30. I just can't trust the train to get there on time and for £15 a night in the Generator hostel near Euston, you can't go wrong I don't think. The first thing I asked for when I arrived was "Do you have a freezer?". I needed somewhere to put my ... read more

With our passports at the Swedish embassy and vacations that we have to use up, last Saturday was ‘be an English tourist’ day. The options were many - Marlow, Oxford, Bath, York but we zeroed in on Cambridge. Often regarded as one of the most beautiful universities in the world, with an interesting history to boot, we took the train from Kings Cross (a la Harry Potter) down to Cambridge. London is well connected to Cambridge with trains from Kings Cross as well as Liverpool Street. The fast train will get you there in 45 minutes and the normal one in 90. A cheap day return ticket will cost £17. For train timings refer to http://ojp.nationalrail.co.uk/planmyjourney/time_table/journey_requirements.asp?&T2ID=3052_2005725173028. From the Cambridge railway station you can either hire a bike or hop onto the Sightseeing tour bus (£8 a ... read more
