The trick is not to over plan the trip. All you need is a reasonable level of fitness, a touring bike, a rough idea of the route you want to follow and a love of life. I finished a contract on October 31st, decided a break would do me good, cleared it with the wife and kids and flew out on November 12th. So no drama but here’s the prep I did. I looked at the typical weather and Australia in Nov / Dec is going from Spring to Summer. I was aware that South Australia gets very cold in winter and was happy that it may get hot. Having said that some days shade temperatures reached the high 30s to low 40s celsius. That means road temperatures were higher, although the ... read more

Cycle from Sydney to Perth! What all the way across? Are you sure! That’s an awful long way. Why would you want to? What about the deadly snakes and killer spiders? I’ve heard the road trains don’t stop for anything! Drivers are all doing speed. Where will you get enough water in that heat? It’s 4,360 kms and it’s a blast. You get to cycle good quality sealed roads, dirt tracks, mountain passes. You track the third longest navigable river in the world, past wheat plains and vineyards. Cruise across treeless desert and check out hard core mining towns. Throw in a 146km straight road that disappears to the horizon in both directions, with you a tiny dot on an endless 360 degree landscape and picture yourself smiling and listening to the wind whistle across the ... read more

Looking back I can see a misspent youth playing sports and later spending all my disposable income traveling around Europe, Asia, Australasia. Marriage meant a 2 year honeymoon through India, Nepal, Thailand, Australia, New Zealand and Borneo. A period of nesting and raising a brood gave the opportunity to enjoy a couple of years in Sydney and later to take them all on a four month trip through Thailand, Australia and Borneo. Then it was knuckle down time to put the kids through school softened by fantastic French camping and knocking out a few Ironman trialthlon events. UK events (for charity) gave way to overseas events in Switzerland, Australia and Canada (for fun). Then as the kids have started penning their own agendas the travel bug has returned with trips to Nepal, Cambodia and Australia, and ... read more
