After my little warm up I was looking forward to starting into the real thing. Over the course of nine days I covered the section from Minehead to Clovelly. I was blessed with fantastic sunny weather. Almost dawn to dusk sunshine although it was chilly at night. It did get a little dull for the last couple of days and it only rained once and that was during the night. It's a very simple lifestyle. Walk, eat, sleep and enjoy the breathtaking scenery. It's also lovely chatting to people along the way and walking a while with some of them, from a few hundred yards to a few miles. Clovelly seemed a good place to take my leave of the SWCP. The photos tell the story.... read more

For this trip I left the bike at home and was exercising different muscles. I'd heard and read that the South West Coast Path, 620 miles from Minehead to Poole, is quite hilly from the start. As I was setting out with new boots and other new gear I wanted a couple of gentle days to break myself and the gear in. I quickly discovered that there was a West Somerset Coast Path which ended at Minehead where the SWCP started. (It's important not to mix up your SWCP and your WSCP!). Perfect for a warm up. Due to logistical problems, mainly that I didn't check the bus timetable properly, I had to start walking from Bridgwater which added the last section of the Parrett Trail to my itinery. So I set off on a fine ... read more

Yes, another Jurassic Coast post, as well as an Exmoor one. Both of these part of hiking groups. All of us, travelling from the city smog out into the countryside. I will say this. I love the countryside; the open air, the silence. Especially the silence. Exmoor National Park is a low light pollution area. The stars are close; the sound of their silence is serene; I love the affinity we all have with Nature. Such is my love for Nature I did do another cold water plunge at Durdle Door, leaving onlookers in their winter coats and woolly hats gasping. I do not love: youth hostels, backpacks, hours of hiking in the rain with wet boots, and malfunctioning water supply. Suffice it to say I shan’t be repeating the experience but I wanted to mark ... read more

After 2-1/2 days in Salisbury I thought we should take a day in Bath before heading off to the castle for our anniversary. Really, I love Jane Austen; her books, the movies, anything Jane Austen. We visited her home in Chawton a couple of years ago, ate lunch in the kitchen of her brother’s home across the way, walked the streets that she would have walked. So really, a trip to Bath would be all about Jane Austen. We took the train to Bath and walked the ½ mile to our Bed and Breakfast. Uphill and over cobbled streets, like all of the streets we have been on. But it was good exercise. After dropping our bags off we went off to find Jane Austen. The first stop was the Jane Austen Center where, who else ... read more

I decided to get up for another early start for some sunrise photography in Ilfracombe. There was the huge marmite-like Damien Hirst "Verity" sculpture. Marmite-like as in that people either love it or hate it. There was lots of apparent symbolism - standing on a pile of books, scales of justice, held behind her back, pointing a sword in the air and being pregnant. Typical Damien Hurst, if you look back at her from the sea wall, all the skin has been pealed back showing all her insides. Grim to say the least. I am never one to miss a view, so the nearby Capstone Hill was worth a climb. After breakfast, we headed off to the nearby Exmoor National Park and a place jointly called Lynton and Lynmouth. Lynton is at the top of the ... read more

We had made the long journey to Devon (with a stop half way) yesterday. Well I say "Devon" and we had touted our staycation this year being to Devon, but we had spent the night in Taunton, which we discovered was actually in Somerset. Not that it mattered. I got up early, which is my usual routine for some sunrise photography, and I headed to Glastonbury, which is not too far from Taunton, especially on the empty roads this early in the morning. Even the M5 motorway was empty, which was in stark contrast to our journey yesterday, when it was completely jammed in both directions (the Friday change-over apparently). I had planned to go to Glastonbury Tor, which was well sign-posted, but in the dark, it was difficult to work out where best to park ... read more

The British seaside is a national institution: home of fish and chips, & buckets and spades & Amusement arcades. On a hot summer day we went to the seaside with Ian and his sister Emma. The town's name is thought to derive from a mixture of Saxon and Latin words. Weston probably started out as 'west tun', meaning 'the west settlement'. The words 'super' and 'mare' come from the Latin for 'on the sea'. Ian is a great story teller and so full of information which he delivered brilliantly as we walked along the causeway, the promenade and then onto the Grand Pier. The pier was rebuilt in 2010 following a fire, which could have been more disastrous had it not been for an employee’s quick thinking to remove gas cylinders from a restaurant. “Oh we ... read more

My social life was zero because of the pandemic restrictions. Being fed up, I decided to visit familiar Swindon. In a flash, I realised a school friend lived another 30-40 mins train ride from Swindon. A tight trip to capture three locations at one go. I had booked the fastest train so I spent minimum time in the train itself to a max 45 mins. The trains and stations were pretty empty. With train tickets and bike reservation, a small overnight bag and some gifts of Indian sweets for my friends as it was the festive time of Durga pooja, I ventured out like a lone warrior. As soon as the connecting train arrived at the platform, I panicked when I spotted the only cycle symbol in the first class compartment. Thankfully, the train guard approached ... read more

I wanted our 3-year anniversary to be special and after hearing some good reviews about a 5-star hotel in Bath I decided to look it up and discovered through my hotel bookings I could save almost a 100 hundred a night on a room. We had originally decided to go away on our actually anniversary at the end of last year but had to cancel the booking on the day due to Fiona's older two kids having a stomach bug and subsequently we were able to rebook 2 weeks later. The reason I wanted to go to bath was because I had seen this hotel called Mcdonald Bath Spa where some of my work colleagues had stay recently and thought we could also go to the Thermae Bath Spa but unfortunately learn it is closed when ... read more

"It doesn't taste anything like American cheese!" exclaimed Madam. We were heading to Wells in Somerset for a couple of days and stopped off at Cheddar on the way and, after a brief look at the end of the gorge, had gone in to the only cheese shop to actually make Cheddar cheese in Cheddar. They had a wide range of samples and we worked our way around them from mild to mature. The first cheese sample was the mild, matured for only a few months. Madam savoured it slowly and said "Mmmm... nice." The second was more mature with a stronger taste. Madam's breath quickened and said "This is NOTHING like American cheese." When the cave aged Cheddar touched her tongue her breath became heavy and she let out a long soft moan. Several women ... read more
