Sion work early this morning as he had a plan and I was invited along . He probably should have realised that he needed to invite me as I was the driver . Without me he was going nowhere. He had a plan. He had received a message about meeting his friend Woolly Mammoth and his carer Jo for a walk, a chat and lunch out. Well even if Sion had decided not to meet up I was going . Sion got ready and found his way to my bag where he would sit for the journey to Ellesmere. Woolly had been doing his research and found the Sculpture Park which surrounds the mere at Ellesmere . A 15 minute drive away from home . We had been before but there was still a large part ... read more

Whereever we move to we try to get out and find out about our immediate neighbourhood . That does not always take too long . Then we draw circles around the house . The first to cover around five miles from home . A short trip to see what is local . The circle gets bigger . Half an hour travel from home . When that is exhausted the circle widens to around one hour from home home . Once that has been covered we have the urge to move house and start again . After a year in our current home we still have places to visit on the doorstep. Places a touch further away and those just at the outer limit of daily travel . But we are getting bored . We try our ... read more

So the teaser yesterday was about the connection between the Ice Age, artificial insemination and Eglantyne Jebb. We did not bother setting the sat nag for Ellesmere. I had travelled this road many times before . Sometimes for a trip out to see the ducks with the children. At other times it was for work. The roads were quiet and we arrived at the Mereside parking with plenty of space to park Ziggy. It would not have been good enough for Gabby. Our girl is a touch too wide for the spaces alongside the road . In the summer the walk alongside the Mere would have been heaving . Ducks everywhere . Canadian Geese , youngsters going out for walk with their parents just as I did with mine all those years ago. Pushchairs , buggies ... read more

The school year at Ellesmere has come to an end and we are thrilled to have experienced all of the festivities that go with it. June 30th was the last day of the Summer Term, a term that was even shorter than normal this year due the repositioning of Half Term to accommodate Queen Elizabeth’s Diamond Jubilee. We always enjoyed this time of year while we lived at the College and this year has been no exception with a multitude of social events. When I last attended the Headmaster’s Drinks in 2003 it was for our farewell and always doubled as the final of Common Room croquet. With the short school term, GCSE and A-level exams, expeditions and the inclement weather the croquet has slowly gone by the wayside. However, the drinks are still poured and ... read more

I am not the biggest Harry Potter fan, in fact I have not finished reading the series of books (I think I am up to Number 5) but I have seen all of the movies. However, Narelle is a major fan and has read the books more than once and watched the movies on multiple occasions. So when she bought us tickets to the Warner Bros. Harry Potter Studio Tour I was not exactly doing cartwheels with enthusiasm but took the opportunity to go – and as it is near London NLS needed a driver. It was an early morning trip down the M40 to Leavesdon near Watford, which is where the movie set for HP was for the ten years of filming. Warner Bros. have left the set as it was ... read more

I had nearly forgotten how fantastic Big School at Ellesmere is. It is the original school building and still has the stunning high wooden ceilings and stained glass windows in the end wall. It is also home to one of only six Shultz organs in the UK; the organ that is traditionally played at the Leavers’ Ball at the end of the Summer Term along with concerts throughout the year. Over the past few years the school has installed many of the Games and House boards from around the school to centralise that part of school life. You can now sit there and read the names of past Headmasters, Cricket and Rugby Captains, Captains of School and Colour recipients. Around the top of the walls are the Shooting teams dating back to early last century. It ... read more

We are having the best time catching up with friends in Shropshire. It is amazing how quickly the seven year gap has just faded away. Conversations appear to begin as they left off and the laughter seems to arrive just as freely as it always did. As one person put it; “it’s as if you just went out to get milk”. Well, seven years to get a pint of milk might be stretching it a bit but it is a comfortable and familiar environment to be back in. So far so good with the car – we certainly like it and I can only recommend Peugeot Eurolease NZ. They took all the hard work and made the process very easy and the Peugeot 308 is nice to drive. It took a bit of getting used to ... read more

We are back in the UK after seven years and it was raining the day we left and it was raining the day we arrived. With the ghastly summer we had in Auckland getting some sun is paramount – especially when we read that Auckland seems to be having its best autumn weather for a while. As an aside the south of the UK is in a drought, which makes for many a funny conversation amongst the locals; especially when the cows across the road are up to their udders in mud… Our friends in the UK had sent texts and emails last week wishing us all the very best for the Heathrow queues as the new Olympic inspired immigration procedures, strikes and budgets cuts had seen the time taken to get through customs balloon to ... read more

We spent a wet week in June, 2010, boating on the Llangollen Canal on board the Lyneal Trust's 70' narrowboat 'Shropshire Lass II', travelling from the boat's base at Lyneal, near Ellesmere in Shropshire, to LLangollen in Wales. Then back and on to Whitechurch for a day returning to the base at Lyneal. The Lyneal Trust is a charity whose aim is to enable disabled people with their families and friends to enjoy canal and narrowboating holidays from their base at Lyneal. The Lyneal Trust offer:- - an 8-berth wheelchair accessible narrowboat cruiser - 'Shropshire Lass II' ; - a 12 seat, wheelchair accessible, 'day' narrowboat – ‘The Shropshire Lad'; - two, wheelchair accessible dormitory buildings sleeping 6 people in each; and - a Victorian canal-workers cottage offering 2 single beds on the top floor but ... read more

We have had our canal boat for 5 days now and it has been an amazing experience. Very relaxing. We are on the Llangollen Canal which starts in England just south of Chester which is just south of Liverpool. We started around mid-point on the canal going northwest into Wales to the canals starting point at Llangollen. The countryside is beautiful moving from rolling pasture to hilly, wooded country. The canal goes along a ridge as you move up it. The stretch from Gobowen where we started to Llangollen includes 2 locks (no lockmaster so self operated), 2 tunnels (one 491 meters long) and 2 aquaducts (one short and with a ledge on both sides and one longer one with just a metal lip on one side and a walkway on the other). The aquaducts are ... read more
