Sometimes things are better done the second time around. Sometimes we need to redo something in order to get a better result, because the first time did not pan out the way it was planned. As they say, If at first you don’t succeed, try, try again. We are all only human and no one gets it right the first time every time. So, for me its travel 2.0, quarantine 2.0, regaining myself and my heart 2.0 and blog 2.0. Normal people do a singular 180 to turn their life around and generally seem to hold it there. Well, it appears that this is not my style. It turns out that for me life is a series of dizzying pirouettes. This time I will commit to traversing my life on a roller coaster instead of the ... read more

So, now was the time to earn my paycheck. I was in England for a training session for a new program, near one of our main offices in Wallingford. The session was held at Jesus College at Oxford University, one of 38 colleges that make up the University. It was very nice and in a way, I think it helped our focus. At the time, students were still on break, so I think there were a few other companies holding sessions at the college and we were all accommodated in individual dorm rooms. I wish I had this room in college! I had a nice comfy double bed, my own small bathroom, and plenty of desk and storage space, as well as a mini fridge where I kept a few snacks and drinks. I patted myself ... read more

13 September 2019, Friday Day 12 on Thames Path. Reading to Henley-on-Thames, day 28 of travel We left the Crowne Plaza hotel around 0830 and walked a little over a mile to the Tesco superstore where we had breakfast at the cafe inside. I had told Jo, Norma and Karen it was a short 7.5 mile day. It turned out to be more than 11.5. We started at the Caversham bridge and passed a footbridge over the Thames. This is a suspension bridge with a single structural tower and cables to the abutments that support the bridge deck. Then the bicycles started flying by. A duck on the shore was resting on one leg. Jo commented the duck was doing Pilates. Our own bodies could use a good Pilates session. Today we are looking for the ... read more

10 September 2019, Tuesday Abingdon to Wallingford day 10 on Thames Path, day 24 of travel. One misty, moisty morning When foggy was the weather We met with old friends Not dressed up in leather With apologies to this old nursery rhyme, we do join together for our morning walk. It is a very misty morning as we leave Cosenar's House for our 'daily constitution.' At Abington lock there is a demonstration of how the old wooden weir system worked on the locks. This we attempted to describe earlier when we talked to Steven, the lock keeper at Northmoor. The upper and lower weir paddles are shown and the bottom supports in the river bed. It takes a person in excellent shape to handle this system. The display, almost like an outdoor sculpture, was a tribute ... read more

9 September 2019, Monday Day 8 of Thames Path, Oxford to Abingdon, day 23 of travel. Our rest day in Oxford included many interesting things about this university town. Today we leave by heading back toward town to the bridge across the Thames at Abingdon Road. Here we pick up the Thames Path and start our walk on to Abingdon. Our breakfast was served at 7:30 which meant we got almost an hour earlier start than on prior days. The path is crowded with bicyclists and joggers and walkers heading into Oxford. The forecast for the day is for 50 to 60% chance of rain every hour, so we are prepared with our rain gear today. As we approach our first lock, Iffley Lock, our attention is drawn to the tower of a church. This is ... read more

8 September 2019, Sunday The photos are back so we have revised and edited this post. A rest day and visit to Oxford. No walking on Thames Path today. Day 23 of travel. Our breakfast at Lakeside Guest House features fresh fruit with granola and yogurt. We plan our day to explore the colleges and see downtown Oxford. Here is Karen's narrative of our day. Sunday - A day amongst the 'dreaming spires of Oxford.' We have a lovely breakfast in a sunny dining area and then are off to see the town. - According to a 2017 census the population of Oxford is 154,600 people. This is misleading as the traditional, 'old' part of the city where the university is located, is very compact. We have signed up for one of those 'pay what you ... read more

7 September 2019, Saturday Thames Path day 6, Newbridge to Oxford Day 22 of travel There are several items around Rose Revived about Newbridge in West Oxfordshire County. There is a sign indicating 40 miles from the source of the Thames and 154 miles to the barrier in London. The sign also heralds (from a time long ago) the early announcement of the opening of The Rose Revived by the new owners. "Redecoration of the facility, with all the amenities currently available, makes the inn quite desirable." Cross the road is a sign for the meadow and discovery of the lower windrush path and valley. Our taxi driver meets us at about 9:30 for transport back to the Ferryman Inn at Bablock Hythe to begin our walk and reduce the distance into Oxford by about three ... read more

Henley-on-Thames is rather an iconic town, bigger than a village but hardly a city. It is of course on the Thames River. Amazingly to me, the water rushes in and out because of a tidal influence. The word “rushes” is not used lightly. We could see various water birds (ducks, swans, etc) racing downstream with the outgoing tide, but hardly moving when trying to move upstream. Lots of water craft. Many have seen better days, and several are well maintained. Boats are available for hire, ranging from the large to small motor boats.... read more

A glimpse into the life of Lord & Lady Nuffield & a look around this millionaires modest abode - we certainly walked into a time capsule. William Morris (not the William Morris of Arts & Crafts fame) this William Morris, later known as Lord Nuffield was one of the world's greatest philanthropist of the 20th century. He brought cheap motoring to Britain, by introducing mass production processes in 1912 he registered WRM Motors Ltd for the manufacture of cars. Lord Nuffield was never extravagant with his money and gave much away to good causes. In 1927 he started to give large sums to hospitals particularly in areas where he had car manufacturing factories. His name is familiar in regard to many aspects of medicine Nuffield Orthopaedic centre, Nuffield Institute for Medical Research to name just a ... read more
