Yesterday I had lunch with a real English rapper! I met Jason (aka Mr. Flex) at a club when I was in London and he insisted on coming to visit me in Oxford. I was taken aback but, always on the lookout for fun and adventure, agreed. It turns out that Jason is a totally okay rapper. He looks vaguely like Biggie Smalls which is exciting and has Carribbean ancestry which helps with his rapper image. He showed me his music video even! This was awkward because while his rhymes were totally better than mediocre, the music video was just him nodding for 4 minutes and looking thug. I did not know what to say and was unimpressed with the choreography to say the least. As a rapper, Mr. Flex is currently unemployed and did not ... read more

As we begin to approach the ‘Oh my gosh, I actually have to grow up a bit’ time of life aka UCAS applications, the head of my sixth form decided it was high time we had our aspirations raised. Hence it occurred that, on one of the coldest days of the year, twenty intelligentish, though half asleep, 17 year olds were bundled onto a coach bound for the ‘big’ world of Oxford. The school had been invited by New College, Oxford University, to bring some prospective students to get a taste of Oxford life; the college is closely linked to our school, having helped found it over 400 years ago. I had been on a similar trip last year and thanks to encouraging and witty talks by a first year law student, Matt (part of which ... read more

Let me start off by saying that Formal Dinner is the most exciting thing that can happen in a dining hall. If you ask "How is this night different from all other nights?" the answer is, much like the Passover seder's response, fourfold: On this night you must sign up to attend dinner and may bring a date, making it exclusive On this night everyone dresses nicely and looks moderately attractive, on other nights the only assurance is that people are dressed On this night the food is good and served to you in 3 courses, on all other nights you yourself retrieve 2.5 lbs of pasta (few choices, large servings!) (meaning it also costs more $ but who really cares, our parents pay it anyway...) It's more than kinda like Harry Potter You dress up ... read more

My first actual train ride ever took me to the oldest university town in the world today. I actually missed my train because the bus got stuck in traffic, but luckily was able to get on the next one. I just wandered around for a bit at first, getting my bearings. It was amazing how well the old and new buildings went together. There were several buildings that were covered in these vine/tree things. They were just a dull winter brown, but they were still beautiful. I bet in spring they're even more so. My first stop was the St. Mary the Virgin Church. It wasn't that large, but the stained glass windows were beautiful. Then I went to the Christ Church College. It's one of the major colleges and had several areas that were definitely ... read more

On Saturday Scott and I zipped up to Oxford for a day trip. It was a cold fresh day with a few flashes of blue sky. We arrived to a town still waking up at 9.45am. Our first stop was the Covered Market and we wandered around looking at all the local produce, cheese and meats. Apparently the oldest ham in England was in the market, however we didn’t see it. We did see a lot of game pheasants, rabbits, pigeons etc. We then had a coffee at one of the oldest building in Oxford, one of those buildings that looks like it’s half falling down. After that we strolled down to the Modern Art Museum and visited a few shops. At noon we met up with our guide for the next 90mins. The tour guide ... read more

Making friends with a native Oxfordian and going on a pub crawl: good idea! Matching him drink for drink at all three pubs: bad idea :( Befriending a real English bartender: good idea! Waiting for an hour alone in a bar because he ran into trouble with the law and could not keep the engagement: embarassing idea :( Taking a cab because you're late for an appt with your tutor: good idea! Asking the cab to take you somewhere slightly inaccessible by car and paying 5 pounds to be driven out of the way for 10 minutes, finally ending up 100 yards from where you started: dumb idea... read more

Firsts first: I went to my first Bop! That's code for a college party at a club, the theme was "Children's Books". Typical, right? At William and Mary we had themes like "Wizards & Sluts." I studied in the Bodleian. I went to this special room a million stairs up called Duke Humphrey's Library. It's incredible. Rich, dark wood stretches up and up like tree trunks that grow ancient tombs. All of the books look as though they could be spellbooks and you aren't even allowed to bring pens in. It's abolutely gorgeous, and the books reach all the way to the ceiling which is painted with latin and other stuff. Perfect study room, makes me feel like I could be doing important scholarly work. And not just check facebook ;) I walked through Christ Church ... read more

Friends!! I've met some cool people and all of them are not only "nice," "kind," and all those rather dull things but fascinating. Here's a quick run down ~ Ekaterina is from Bulgaria and does economics. She explained country credit ratings to me and even contextualized our econmoic crises! She's also incredibly empathetic and empowering and we're going to join Salsa together. Ay aya ay! Yingtong is from China but studies at Smith in the US. I was able to talk to her about China and clear up a lot of the misconceptions I had about the culture and history. We talked about the aftermath of the Maoist regime, the powers of societal pressure in terms of propaganda, and how they think raw veggies are bad for you. Frazer I call Raisen. Today was quite eventful! I went with my new friend Alex (yes you read that right I made a friend!!) to the Botanical Gardens. It was cold and a lot of the stuff was dead but a lot of it wasn't. There was a greenhouse and lovely landscaping. Then we went to the Museum of Science or something and saw ancient scientific instruments. The ones for measuring planetary movement were so beautiful although now they'd be considered obsolete. They were as much art as science - intricate measurements, graceful proportions, creativity and ingenuity and imagination marking the beginnings of new ideas. We also saw an exhibit on clocks but it was a bit dull -- apparently they've always told time... Next we went to the Tower and Church of St. Michaels which is the oldest building ... read more
