Hello from Norwich, Norfolk, England! Yes, that's right, we made it home in one piece. We've been so busy this week, that I suddenly realised I hadn't done a last blog - for the rest of Chicago, Orlando & also Boston, the last place we went to, so here it is........ Chicago was one of the wettest places we've visited. We spent much of our time window shopping on the Magnificent Mile, literally a mile of Prada, Gucci, Gap (?!) and various other shiny glass fronted shops that we won't be able to afford to shop in. Ever. When it wasn't raining, we went to Grant Park to see the famous Bean Sculpture. Famous in Chicago at least. It's a giant, chrome blob that reflects the skyline brilliantly. Like most art, it's a bit pointless, but ... read more

….”Six, Five, Four…” All Journeys have a beginning and an end. Ours began in Cornwall. The idea was born in the cold depths of winter. Most trips to hotter climates often are and frequently follow hot-on-the-heels of one too many dark winters. Life, we had decided, was too short to put things off. There are times in all our lives when we are reminded painfully of the fragile nature of our existence. You never know what’s around the corner and it really doesn’t pay to put off something you want to do until tomorrow. And besides, we both wanted to feel again - " The heat of life in a handful of dust ", as Joseph Conrad once described it - that passion for life that we must squeeze from every moment before it is gone. ... read more

The cruise began in Reedham. Our crew was comprised of a number of amateur captains who were pleased to discover that drink driving laws did not apply to the steering and mooring of boats. Due to several delays, we spent our first night in Reedham. It was there that we learned of the advantages of a mobile home; if you don't like the neighbours, just move on down the river. I didn't catch our neighbours name; in fact he must not have mentioned it as you couldn't miss a word he said in his booming voice. He had a huge beer belly, sarcastic tone and made up in obnoxious noise for what he lacked in social etiquette. The boat owners just shook their heads sadly. "He comes here twice a year, every year," they complained. "He ... read more

I've just got back from plundering the Norfolk Broads with 8 other crew mates in what turned out to be my first farewell party. We hired a brand new 9 birth river cruiser from Wroxham for a total of 4 days. The weather was lovely and as we set off the roof slid back, the Pimms flowed and we wasted no time in soaking up the sun. It was after we returned from an exploration walk up the river bank that I was surprised to find the gang had laid on a pirate themed farewell boat party for me. Ahhh you guys! Thank you all for a fun evening and some strange looks from other boaters as I imitated something more like a country farmer than a menacing pirate. In the evenings we either played Uno, ... read more

After some frantic last minute packing we finally left Salhouse on the Saturday afternoon and moved to our first campsite in the fine city of Norwich. Dale, Kate and Tim came to say farewell. We watched the world final in the local. Finally we left for Portsmouth on the Monday morning. Two nights were spent on a very pleasant site near Chichester. ... read more

Today I should reach the halfway milestone - 43 hills out of 86 - and 2,000 miles. But I'm trapped in King's Lynn for now as bike needs emergency surgery. To complete the 86 in 86 days I should finish on Ben Nevis on Monday August 7. East Anglia is pretty ... but as dull as the ditch water which runs through the Fens. Still got another day to get out of this flat desolate part of the world. and escape into the Peak District. So on Saturday I thought I'd try and crack out a 100-mile day. The roads are pancake flat and I had to cover the distance eventually, so why not do it in one day? Initially I felt like Armstrong on acid - breezing through the lanes, Ullrich hanging on to my ... read more

Well, the first blog and guess what - I haven't been out of the garden since Tuesday when I biked into Holt for the shopping, a journey of four miles round trip. The countryside looked really pretty and green, when I started my journey the sun shone, but as I met a neighbour on the way and chatted for a bit it was raining by the time I got home.Watch out for a detailed account of my next bicycle trip, it will be riveting!... read more

Hi Folks Slowly getting the hang of this blog business so hopefully will be more regular in future ! Today set off on cycle - needs to use more so as to save on petrol costs ! Set off early to take photos of Oxburgh Hall - 16th cent stately home. Arrived to find it covered in scaffolding - not pleased. Continued on through the countryside. Continued few miles to Cockley Cley where there is an attractive medieval church and the Iceni Village (Iceni as in Iron Age tribe). Grumbled about the £5 entrance fee. Really worth it. Site contains an agric museum. a recon of a Icenit village and a trail down to a bird hide overloooking a lake. Also a sixteenth cent cottage - really interesting architecturally. Finally - and the real gem - ... read more
