Shortly after our returned to the UK while being a bit homeless ourselves visiting anyone who would give us a bed for the night, we visited a little Norfolk coastal village called Happisburgh. This 12th century North sea coastal village is nestled between Cromer and Great Yarmouth and it is on record as the first place in England where on average two meters of its clay cliff coastline a year is now falling into the sea. This includes various sea view (now ground level) hotels and homes. Diana Wrighton is such a person who on last count (Im sure this has changed since this winter kicked in) she had only 16 meters of path left before her hotel drops meters into the sea, she plans to stay for another 5 meters but then for obvious health ... read more

Well folks, this is it. In 24 hours I will be on a plane over the Atlantic heading back to Lucasville (by way of Minneapolis and Cincinnati). It's hard to believe that my time abroad is up. It seems like just yesterday I was writing about traveling in France and Italy. I have learned a lot about myself and what I feel is important over the last couple of months. First off, I have learned how independent I can be. I have taken care of myself since August 30- feeding, clothing, and cleaning myself! I know I can live on my own and not end up dead :) I am now a braver person now too. Looking back, I can't believe I went hiking for miles along a cliff, jumped off a mountain in Switzerland, tried ... read more

This weekend I started saying my goodbyes to my new friends from UEA. It started on Friday night with my flatmates. We went to Nando's, a Portuguese chicken restaurant (a chain). It was pretty darn delicious! Tina made me get a Natta (or something like that), which is a little custard tart. Man, am I glad she made me get it! It was spectacular! After Nando's we went back to the flat and just hung out in the kitchen, which is rare to get all 6 of us together at the same time! Then Saturday night I went out with my International Friends. We went to Squares, which is a bar/nightclub at the Riverside Entertainment area. Very nice, we played a couple of games of pool, visited, and danced! The music was a little too loud, ... read more

Last night me and 3 of my flatmates ushered in the Christmas season by going ice skating! Every year a rink is built in front of the Forum (Norwich's library), near the market. It's not very big, but in a great location. We rode the bus down into town for the 8:00 session. We donned our skates- a challenge with their fancy little clippy things instead of good old-fashioned laces. Then we hit the ice. We were all a little bit shaky at the beginning, but me, Tina, and Kate got our footing quickly. Ian, on the other hand, had never been skating before and it showed! The rink wasn't too crowded- just the right amount of people were there- not packed but not empty either. The ice was a bit rough, it was the last ... read more

Yesterday was Thanksgiving. At least it was Thanksgiving in the United States. Unfortunately, the broader population of England doesn't celebrate this wonderful holiday. Luckily, the International Office knew that there would be rebellion if there wasn't turkey, so they offered a meal for us last night. It was pretty darn good- not as good as home-made of course- but totally worth it. I don't know the last time I have been that full! I had turkey, stuffing, mashed potatoes, roasted potatoes, corn, green beans with chestnuts, sweet potatoes, pecan pie, and some sort of awesome chocolate pie. Wow. After dinner, I waddled back to my flat and promptly fell asleep. I awoke about half an hour later and grabbed Ian and headed for the pub. The "American Football" game was on. It was Ian's first time ... read more

Today was one of my friend's (Marina) birthday. So to celebrate my international gang went out for dinner. The place we went is called Ah So, it's a Japanese restaurant. Oh my goodness it was fantastic! It was the kind where they cook right at your table and do tricks and make fire and all of that good stuff. A bit pricey, but I was stuffed at the end and it was all worth it! The first course was sushi and sashimi- it was the first time I've eaten sushi and it was actually really good! I had the fish eggs and raw salmon and everything. I was pleasantly surprised! The second course was grilled vegetables- onions, baby corn, asparagus, and zucchini (or courgettes in England!). Again, fantastic. They were served with a garlic soy sauce ... read more

So today I did something very un-Greg Trusz like. In all honesty, I'm not sure what I was thinking. I had a day off and nothing else to do so I decided to take a bike ride. A 26 mile bike ride. For more details, read on. I have a cycle map for Norwich, it's really nice and tells you where there are bike lines and paths in town and what roads to avoid. And on it it shows a pathway called National Cycle Network Route 1. So I looked it up on-line and it turns out that the UK has a great bike trail system all over the country and this was one of those routes. The next town on the route from Norwich is called Reepham, and I decided I would check it out. ... read more

Hey Hey Well after dragging out my leaving as long as i have i'm now infiltrating your mailboxes with more Wes related activities. Tonight has been my last night in Norwich, which is a surreal thing to type, celebrated in the traditional style of authentic "English" cuisine. Though i would recommend a boycott of the Prince of India after the blandest Chilli Masala possible. For the last 9 years this little inbred inclave of East England has been a welcoming, wonderful and occassionally weird place to live and i will miss it very much. Even more so i will miss all of my welcoming, wonderful, and occassionally weird (Umut) friends! It is going to be hard not seeing you all for soo long. I will miss you all Wes x ... read more

Halloween. One of the few times you can look absolutely ridiculous and get away with it. Although it is in its current form a truly American holiday, the British get into it as well! We started our festivities Monday night with some pumpkin carving! We produced a truly grotesque masterpiece that is still sitting in our window. I just hope it doesn't start to stink... Then Tuesday night was the Halloween LCR (the LCR is the night club on campus). So me and the rest of my flat donned our getups, ate some no-bake cookies (which I have gotten them addicted to), took pictures, and headed for the Union. We danced the night away to Halloween classics such as Thriller and Monster Mash (plus the usual dance club stuff). After the party was over, the Christian ... read more
