Finally arrived at Capernwray after the first major delays of any trip I’ve ever taken. First, customs took like two hours at the airport just because of a huge line (which apparently I could have bypassed because I’m a student :/) , then, I met Kathy and later Alex while waiting for the coach (we missed the 9:30 one because of customs). That coach finally took us to Victoria coach station where we had some debate but then eventually found the right spot and a bunch of other Capernwray students awaiting that coach. That also was delayed, not leaving until after 1:00 when it was supposed to leave at 12. The coach ride wasn’t so bad at first, we got to see some cool parts of London that had old style apartments with fancy roofs/windows but ... read more

Looking back on the last few days… Have become good friends with Andy, Michael, and Britta, playing cards or ping pong and hanging out every night. Spent one afternoon sitting out under a tree with the sheep, just reading my Bible and really enjoyed that. Unfortunately that won’t be possible very often because of all the rain that is supposed to come this winter. Friday we had our first seminar, which was on Worship. It was ok, a little more interactive than normal lectures, but not anything profound. Friday night was family group night, and our host parents, Phil and Rachael, took us in a minibus to their small village of Warton. It supposedly has connections to the George Washington family. Later at their house we played games, and got to try some awesome English cheeses, ... read more

Had a few firsts today, including going for a run, climbing up the tower, and bathroom cleaning duty. No assignments yet, not really looking forward to those. Lectures are pretty good so far, especially Rob’s. Kim however has an interesting accent, takes long pauses, and doesn’t have as easy of a structure to follow in her powerpoint making it hard to stay interested and take notes for her lectures on prayer (not really bad though). I’m looking forward to family groups tomorrow and our trip to the lake district this weekend.... read more

Tuesday 22.12.2009 Day 68 Hadrian’s Wall All though is snow lots again last night we decided to brave the snow again today and go to Hadrian’s Wall. Hadrian ’s Wall was built by the Roman Emperor Hadrian in 122AD, it Stretches for 80 Miles from Newcastle to Bowness- on-Solway near Carlisle, and was the northern frontier of the empire for almost 300 years. It was superseded in Norman times by dozens of castles and fortified houses some of which remain largely intact. We went to see one of the forts that where still very intact it was closed due to winter but still worth the drive in the snow. The roads around the wall where covered in snow and we skidded along the road almost into another as we came to one intersection but we took ... read more

Monday 21.12.2009 Day 68 William Wordsworth It snow lots last night and the snow was very think but we decided to try and go for a drive today this time the road from the resort to the motorway was ploughed so we could get out. We went to Dove Cottage where William and his sister Dorothy Wordsworth lived and where he wrote most of his work. We got a book on their life at the cottage which was very interesting. They lived together all of their life and they seem to have a much stronger bond then William did with his wife. Dorothy never married they also had lots of visitors to the house and the visitors even moved house with them when they moved. Dorothy kept detailed dairies of their life. When William became the ... read more

Sunday 20.12.2009 Day 67 The lakes, Rages against the machine get xmass number one. We have a great room close to Pine Lake (the lake the resort) with a full kitchen. We did our shopping yesterday which is good as there is so much snow on the ground that we cannot get out of our resort. We got in the car and gave it a try but did not get very far before we turned around and went home. So we explored the resort instead and made a snow woman and put it outside our room and a few hours a little boy about 5 came along and put in his sled and took it away. Later we found where he had discarded our Snowman taking the carrot nose and been eyes we rescued her and ... read more
