Hiking along the Milford Track was pure bliss - even with a heavy backpack in tow.

We were very lucky with the weather, but on day 3 the clouds came rolling in.

After four exhilarating days hiking along the Milford Track, we had a brilliant time, but were looking forward to going back to civilisation - hot showers seemed like such a luxury when we got back to our hotel.

There was amazing scenery in this volcanic area in the Tongariro National Park. It was fascinating to see volcanic craters and brilliantly colourful volcanic lakes.

We hiked around Mount Ruapehu (2797m). It is the highest and most active volcano in the Tongariro National Park. For any Lord of the Rings fans, this was one of the mountains used in the film for the scenes of 'Mordor'.

The porters on the Inca Trail are absolutely amazing - they carry all of the heavy duty equipment for the four days of hiking along the trail.

Lav and Steve at the highest point on the Inca Trail - Warmiwanuska (Dead Woman's Pass) is an incredible 4215m (13,800 feet) above sea level. We certainly felt the altitude up here!

The orchids along the Inca Trail were so beautiful. Apparently, there are around 300 different species of orchids hidden up in the trees of the cloud forest.

The highest campsite we have ever stayed in, at nearly 14,000 feet - the views out the mountains were fantastic. It was very cold at night though!

We reached Machu Picchu at about 6.30am to make it there for sunrise, after setting off at 5am. At 5am it was still dark, so we had to wear headtorches to find our way along the cobbled paths (it was very exciting!). When we finally reached Machu Picchu it was still surrounded in cloud and looked very mysterious. So no romantic sunrise as we had expected, but we were still in awe at the enchanting Inca citadels high up in the mountains.

Lav and Steve feeling delighted (if a little tired) after four long days of hiking along the Inca Trail, to be at famous Machu Picchu. After all of the long steep mountains climbs, the rain and the cold - it was definitely worth it!!

Waynapicchu is the mountain that is always famously photographed behind Machu Picchu. Steve sits here and takes in the views from the top of the mountain.
