I had mentioned to Steve that before we leave United Kingdom I would like to spend as long as I needed in a Primark store as they have some very cool clothes and in comparison to New Zealand clothes they are incredibly cheap. So we drove to Manchester this morning and we drove to a parking building that just happened to have one of the biggest Primark's attached to it... Apparently I was struggling to contain my enthusiasm. In 1 hour and 55 minutes I left the shop with a bracelet, belt, underwear, skinny jeans and 5 new tops... Hmmm now I need to fit them all into my pack! Oh well... deal with that later! Unfortunately I didn't find any shoes I really liked though! We had some lunch after this then hit the road ... read more

Our last day in Manchester before flying out later in the evening ended on a note of drinking and gluttony. Doesn’t that sound awful. For those who really know us that sort of behaviour doesn’t really happen but we did have fun. Manchester was going through a late summer flush with dry warm weather, a great farewell gift. With such great conditions we were able to continue our wanderings in the very tourist friendly city. Our local tour guide had gone to a lot of trouble to create a list of “must see” places while we have been in this great city and it was a just the right day to visit two of them. One of our tour group is a Coronation Street viewer so what a better place to visit on a very warm ... read more

What a great day we have had exploring this Midland city and finding out everything it has to offer. Our tour guide arrived refreshed after a great night out the previous evening ready to show us the sights of a city she now calls home. Our daughter has been here for ten months and has got to know the city well, so who better to show us around. Manchester seems to have got a reputation for being forever wet. For the next few days that reputation has been locked away and there is not a hint of rain anywhere. The temperatures are going to reach 26 by Wednesday so we hope the locals can cope with the heat. Our wanderings today took us to the John Rylands Library where many valuable books, letters and documents make ... read more

It was quite an exciting day today because we completed our tour of the UK with a very short drive to Manchester. Our first stop in Manchester was at the house where our daughter, who is enjoying her two year OE, is living. With careful forward planning and help from Google Maps we arrived outside the flat in just over an hour. But before we got there we had to experience the foibles of the Midlands weather patterns. Driving south from Kendal the weather looked really good to the west with blue sky somewhere near Morecambe. All thoughts were of what we were going to do on such a beautiful day. As we got closer to Manchester we could see an enormous black mass descending from above. It was so thick it instantly turned day into ... read more

Today shapes up to be one of our most exciting of our trip; we have VIP match and Europa Lounge tickets for Manchester v Arsenal at the most famous of football grounds Old Trafford. GETTING THERE Manchester is about one and a half hours from Skipton and In order to try and avoid the worst of the traffic we got away early - about 9 o’clock. Rather than battle through the city centre and pre/post match traffic we headed for Altrincham a suburb 15 minutes from Old Trafford with free car parking and direct tram links to Old Trafford. All went to plan and we hopped off the tram walked up the street past the cricket ground (and the match day roadside stalls) towards Old Trafford – and there it was! Dominating the skyline, a massive ... read more

Well, here I am back in Manchester, after a trip with more ups than downs. What do I think I have got from it? I had travelled in a way that was to an extent similar, mostly by myself in my late-twenties out towards India, and wanted to know if I could still manage it at the age of 65. Could I survive psychologically, medically, and financially? I went through an initial phase of adjustment, even occasionally wondering how long would I have to stay away to be able to return without loss of face. Well, eventually I settled in and lasted the full planned six months. I now know that I can survive and enjoy such a trip by myself. That is not to say that I might not prefer to make a subsequent trip ... read more

So how hard is it to get to Manchester? In Lou's world just travelling 70 miles from Harrogate & arriving at my first hotel has been a challenge! I eventually finished packing at some late hour last night & tomorrow I'll find out how heavy this case is! My theory is that if I can lift up the case, it's less than 23kg! Although the twinge in my back is probably telling me 1) it's not that far off 23kg and 2) not only should have gone to the gym to lose weight but also build up the necessary muscles to carry my luggage thousands of miles around the world! I decided that humping bags on & off trains was not going to be fun so resorted to a man & a taxi to make the ... read more
