Monday 16th
Today I awoke to an empty boat. Everyone had left early for work and thought I had the place to myself. However some Thames friends decided to visit....a special ducked named Gary (Nick who also lives on the boat had warned me about Gary, and told me that he regretted naming her Gary after realising she was a she) and a few geese who flew into the kitchen wanting bread for breakfast. Once everyone was fed I set off walking into London, with no plan of what to do. It took as little as 20 minutes until I was standing under the London Eye ferris wheel. I decided to take a ride on the wheel to get a good view and to see where was close by to visit on foot. The view ... read more

Arrived in London at an opportune time and joined in the celebrations for the Queen’s Jubilee. With trepidation regarding the weather which ranged from wet to torrential rain and cold, we set off to watch the flotilla which would be loosely based on the Caneletto painting. Fortunately Victoria’s friends had arrived early and had staked a claim with a very large Union Jack blanket directly opposite the Royal barge. Big Ben ringing twelve noon announced our scheduled departure. Since the weather was fine I rode the open top deck and had great views of the passing scene. We road passed the Houses of Parliament and the HQ of MI5 and MI6 and the sight of the new US embassy next to a trash recycling plant. Does anyone else find that strange? The old Embassy has been sold to the Saudis. Luxury flats and million dollar houseboats have replaced the warehouses and barge docks. Our guide pointed out the “Homes of Rich and Famous” but I am so out of it ... read more

"Home, home on the range - where the deer and the antelope graze" So sang the bloke on the Simpsons. But there are no antelope, or deer - not here. Just London buses, delayed trains, bored faces, clean streets, pavements, tarmac, coats, traffic rules and April. But first, to fill in the rest of Bangkok. We went to a shopping mall called MBK and we asked a tuk-tuk to take us, me sighing at John accepting such a high offer to get us there. But soon after we left the tuk-tuk driver, aghast at the traffic, advised us to take the boat at a cost of 9000 Baht (18p). So we bunged him something for his 5 minutes of driving (he wanted 5 times as much, but we laughed off the suggestion and he conceded with ... read more
