Part of my plan while living in London is to not only travel to exotic European cities, but to see more to the UK itself. In a first step in that regard, I headed to Brighton with Trav on a sunny Sunday in August. While it had not been that long since I had set foot by the ocean, Trav had been oceanless for 6 months, hence the choice of destination. Now Brighton is on its way to being a real beach - no sand, only pebbles, but people lying on said pebbles (on towels!! - not the most comfortable proposition - although deckchairs are also thoughtfully supplied for a small fee), (small) waves and seagulls. There is, however, no smell of the ocean (or at least there was not on 27 August), which is disappointing. ... read more

Ed: Matt once told me Brighton was the quintessential summer spot for Londoners escaping the city for some surf and sun, but having experienced it only in the middle of winter back in 2001, it was hard to imagine that this quiet seaside town could turn into a hot spot that would rival Rio during Carnival. Our friend Christopher was arriving on Friday, so we decided not to plan anything major for the weekend and let him settle in. However, when Kathryn and Kelly informed us the evening Chris arrived that they were heading to Brighton the following day for Gay Pride, it was an adventure too hard to resist. So the following morning, with packed sandwiches we took the train down to Brighton. None of us had any idea where to exactly head, but soon ... read more

The weather was supposed to be nice (it being end of July) but it started of quite chilly and continued for the rest of the day with a spot of sun here and there... Hadn't been to Brighton in ages so I was thrilled to tag along with the Jacobs and Sanidads. Had loads of fun and eat lots of bad things, but what else do you eat on Brighton Pier but bad things!!!... read more

Day 7, 7th June. Hassocks - Brighton - and return Checked my emails before we set out for Brighton and had some nice letters from Kathryn and a photo - she’s so lovely, just felt sad that I couldn’t write her a long mail back. We set off then up the dreaded Ditchling Beacon, just a speed-hump on the South Downs really! Brighton was a big place, clogged with bloody traffic, like any other English town, but with sea shore and pier. We did a lot of stopping and starting, I sensed that Scott and Leslie were getting impatient. I’ll be glad to get out of England actually, and over the sea to France. Had a pricey coffee on the front, Rory and I then tested the catapults on the beach with pebbles! Toby went off ... read more

Day 6 , 6th June. London - Redhill - Hassocks Today we set off for Toby’s place near Brighton, spirits were high, and there were two others joining us, Rory’s brother, Rowan and his friend Ruth. There was a long photo shoot by his parents and all involved, then we left just before ten to cross busy London and to join the A23 south. I hate the pollution in this city, the fumes get in the back of my throat and make me physically heave! At Croydon aerodrome we stopped for sandwiches and Ruth’s home-made flapjacks, then were in the countryside at last. It was surprisingly hilly, and at Turners Hill we stopped for a couple of pints at The Crown pub. This area is what I think they call middle-England, it’s a little hobbit-like in ... read more

Lamborghini trip to the UK We were invited to the Lamborghini Supercar Celebration in the UK, from Friday 19th of May till the 21st 2006. Not that we own such a car, but because we are friends of friends of a friend, we could join the party. We took the night ferry from Hoek van Holland to Harwich. Rough conditions, high seas. An extra plastic bag at hand, you never know. A diner buffet was available just after we boarded the enormous ship. Some hundred truckers already in front of us with the same thought. Food and drinks. No hassles, no long waiting and a very good buffet. A couple of drinks and to the cabins. The next morning at 6 a wake-up message through the intercom: Good-morning ladies and gentleman. Everybody out of bed. We ... read more

Cherrio, Jolly Good, and all that. When Tony Blair led his country into an ill-conceived and poorly planned military effort to back GWB, I thought the last of British hospitality was used up. I was wrong. After learning that not one but two of our newest friends would be in the Brighton area right about the time we would be passing through, our plans were instantly locked down for a few days by the water. Despite a minor automotive snafu, we caught a bus from Heathrow to Brighton with little difficulty. We did notice that Heathrow bears a strong resemblance to all other airports from the 1970's, except the rest have all been renovated already. Next time it's Gatwick all the way. Upon arrival in B-town the Dorrels met us with open arms and open bottles ... read more
