It was a glorious day. A sharp contrast to my last foray around the North East coast, which turned out rather damp. The forecast predicted the warmest early May Bank Holiday on record. I looked out the windows to double check. On a good day, visibility stretches as far as Sunderland from the mother in law's lofty perch. The view confirmed the weather people were on course to get it right today. I found myself on Thornaby railway station waiting for a connection towards Hartlepool. The Travelblog world is full of records of trips to magical places, but the blog that brought you Shildon, Bishop Auckland and Tow Law was on the way to County Durham once more. 6thMay Yarmouth – Hartlepool – 175nm Had a very early start – just getting light when we departed, down the long channel to the entrance of Yarmouth. Lucky it was a long way as I had to stow all the fenders, tyres and planks of wood to the side as we were going along. Just got it finished as we got out. Stunning scene with the sun rising behind a large wind farm. There are so many of them out here in the ocean, and actually they look quite pretty, I guess they’re generating so much power, but can’t imagine that they would EVER be put in..say between T.ville and Maggie Island!!! Welcome to the Hartlepool Tall Ships Race ! The most anticipated event of my own calendar ! Ever since I first heard of the Tall Ships Race in Hartlepool, I booked the week-end off months in advance. I have always loved Tall Ships for as long as I can remember and the last time I saw some of these sailing giants gathered in a port was in St Malo back in the mid eighties. Judging by the incredible popularity of this event, I was not the only one and the figures simply speak for themselves. Three million visitors over three days for the largest free event in the UK and it was it worth of all my expectations!
