The day of the sore feet….. 8.00am brekkie to get the day started. Really nice full English for both of us, then straight to work. Off to Ennerdale Water and the beautiful view of the lake in the morning haze. Trek down the south side of the lake for about 4 miles, before we had to stop for Ellis to have a swim. Freezing cold water was not going to deter him - stripped down naked, put his trunks on and then took the plunge. Heaven was found - he bobbed around in the water for 30 mins getting himself nice and cool (that wasn’t to last). Onwards and upwards for a further 5 miles of gently rising ground to YHA Black Sail for a lunch stop. It was during this 5 miles that the Ellis ... read more

Dents Hill!!!! Wow, Dents Hill!! Left The Manor 8.30am after a wholesome breakfast and had to walk just over a mile to the start of the walk. Climbed up to the cliff top for amazing views over the Irish Sea (after collecting our pebbles - 1 each - to give to The North Sea). Not sure about this start to the route since we seemed to be walking for two hours in the wrong direction before turning inland towards our destination. Nice views, so could put up with the extra mileage (if only we‘d known - Dents Hill, the pain to come that’s inn as Dents Hill)…. Inland for another two and a half hours for our lunch stop. A nice cafe or restaurant to look forward to? Nope - corner shop in Cleater for tuna ... read more

After the first two days being relatively short to help us ease into the hike, today was a biggie at about 25km and over 600m elevation! We felt ready though and made sure we got up and ready early, with a quick banana and snack bar to get us going (after using the pub toilet when they unlocked their doors at 7:30). And just like that, we were off, with a nice stroll down to Ennerdale water whilst the sun already shone brightly. The path then thinned and became quite rocky as it ran alongside the water, with some scree walking and a little bit of rock climbing making it interesting, before settling again lakeside where we stopped for a cuppa and porridge…Cue gusts of wind, dark clouds and drizzly rain! But, as if someone was ... read more

Another early start awaited me this morning but at least I had slept really well this time, I was a little achy from the first days walking but in good spirits for the day ahead. It was going to be a long day but happily I had been informed it would be largely flat until near the end. After the first day we had decided to dramatically re-arrange the day sacks so that Pete’s mother Judy didn’t have one at all and I would have the one that she had been using. This worked really well I felt a lot better with the new day sack although after Pete had stuffed it with extra water and items he couldn’t fit in his one I thought it was a little on the heavy side. The walk started ... read more

It was an early start for me rising at 0600hrs to get ready not being a regular walker or used to trips of this kind I knew there would be a bit of faffing to be done. Breakfast was a bit of a disorganised affair but we got there in the end! Then it was a short hop in the van down to the start point, Pete had gone first with Jess so she could have a little run on the beach and be slightly less neurotic during the walk....yea right!! We had the obligatory photo by the sign signifying the start of the walk, I dipped my toe in the sea (well my walking boot my toes weren't coming out for anything)! And picked my pebble that I will carry from 1 side of the ... read more

Today we wore rain pants and gaiters and we're all much drier at the end of the day. We did actually see the sun for about 5 minutes in the early afternoon! Despite the clouds and occasional rain, it was a much better weather day today than yesterday....no heavy, steady rain and there was less mist and fog and we were able to enjoy some great views from the top of our first fell (hill) in the Lake District. We had our last view of the Irish Sea from the top Dent Hill, which was a steady, fairly steep climb but over easy terrain. Our descent down the other side was very steep....a challenging black diamond ski slope! Again, the terrain wasn't too difficult but we were all glad that it wasn't raining because it would ... read more
