April 4 – St Michael’s Mount .....
After a good night sleep, let me say that again, I mean a great night’s sleep we had our breakfast, packed the car and were on our way to St Michael’s Mount.
You might think we’re going to France to see Mont St Michelle, nope! We’re in England, and one of the main things we wanted to see was St Michael’s Mount.
Ok, quick history lesson. In France, a bunch of monks build Mont St Michelle, when one of the many different King of England was in France conquering the French, he really liked Mont St Michelle, and said “I got have one of these” and I have an island just like this one. He then took some of the monks back to Cornwall and said build me St Michael’s Mount.
They look very similar. The tide comes in and out, the causeway gets covered by water. They’re across the channel from each other. Pretty cool. Lori and Sam told us about St Michael’s Mount, I corrected her, and she corrected me. So, now you’ve learned something.
Kirsten bought tickets on-line for us to see the castle at 11:00
am. The tide would be out, and we could walk to St Michael’s Mount. However, the tide would be coming in at 4pm and the walkway would be closed at 3:30 pm which meant you had to take a boat back.
We parked the car and walked to the monastery. It turns out that its more of a castle than a monastery. When you are the King, you can tell the monks what to do.
The walk up to the entrance to the castle was a very steep and rocky. As we made our way up, we came upon a gentleman who had fallen. Looked like maybe a twisted ankle. It wasn’t pretty, the attendants kept us moving.
We had lunch on the castle grounds. But when we were ready to leave, everyone was queuing up to get down for some reason. Come to find out.... the guy with the twisted ankle was actually a broken leg and was being air lifted out by Coast Guard Helicopter. Ouch! Not a great way to start the day. We were much more careful walking down the path.
We walked back to the mainland and sat at the Pub
watching the tide come in and cover the walkway. It was like watching the people run for the cruise boat, but better. The tide kept coming. We have really had perfect weather, highs around 50F lows around 40F, partly cloudy.
From St Michael’s Mount we drove to Mousehole, such a cute fishing village. Have I mentioned that the roads are NARROW in Cornwall? We parked, walked around a bit; I think we had a beer. And from there we drove along the North Atlantic coast to Land’s End, and then to St Ives. It was amazing to see the landscape changes from being right on the coast to about 3 miles inland. From a moon scape to palm trees and oh so windy.
We ended our day at Prince William Pub built in the 15
th Century in Falmouth, which is at the mouth of the Fal River.
Upon arrival, Sass our host greeted Kirsten with a hug and showed us our room.
After unloading the car, we sat and watched the local soccer game on TV with all the other locals. We had to ask our bartender who we were supposed to be rooting
for...did not want to start any bar fights. Yes, we were having a beer with them, it was great watching the locals yell at the TV.
I couldn’t tell when they were either happy or mad.
