Because we are not travelling until this afternoon we decided to sleep in a bit (more than usual!) and go down for a later breakfast. This proved to be a bad idea as the dining room was ridiculously busy at 9.30am! We had to wait for a table for the first time and then queue up for our food!! The front desk told us that we could checkout late at noon so we thought that we could take our time to pack our bags after breakfast. Unfortunately the cleaning staff were not at all keen on the idea of us having a late checkout and they kept knocking on the door or just letting themselves in because they were dead keen to make up the room!! By 11.15am we were packed and sick of being interrupted ... read more

Arrived in Manchester, UK on June 21, 2009. We took a direct red-eye flight from Vancouver to Manchester. W.. commented the dinner served on the flight was "the best food I've ever eaten". Two hours later he complained of a headache and said "this is the worst day in W.. history." Soon after, all that food he'd eaten came back up. It was a little messy, but a good thing we had a complete change of clothes in the carry-on baggage. N..'s aunt and uncle met us at the Manchester airport and drove us to N..'s cousin's house in Chester (Upton). We were all a tad bit jet-lagged. We went to a Greek restaurant to celebrate their daughter's 15th birthday.... read more

This morning I headed down to the beauty salon that is located at the gym at the football ground at the end of the road. I had an 8.45am appointment so left Bernie lying in bed to walk down in the drizzle in my open-toed sandals for my leg wax and pedicure in preparation for Spain. When I arrived there was no-one there, the gym wasn’t even open so I sent a text to Kath to make sure that I was in the right place. A couple of minutes later someone arrived to open the gym so he let me in to wait in the warm and dry for the salon to open. The beautician arrived only a couple of minutes after than so all was OK - I was in the right place and they ... read more

We woke up this morning to another glorious day! That makes three days in a row of blue skies and sunshine which is a rare thing indeed here in England. Since the weather was so beautiful we decided to drive back down to Congleton to visit some more NT properties in that area. Our first stop was at Mow Cop Folly - the ‘ruin’ that we could see last Sunday from Little Moreton Hall. Edna is still earning her keep as she managed to guide us to Mow Cop without any trouble. Unfortunately, Mow Cop is not a NT property that is in her database so she could not get us right to the folly - just to the village of Mow Cop. That was a bit frustrating as we could then see the folly up ... read more

The weather today is fantastic - the best day they have had so far in England this spring!! So of course we should have done something to take advantage of the beautiful weather shouldn’t we??? But no, we headed over to the shops at Denton didn’t we so that we could stimulate England’s economy a little bit to help them out of the recession??!! I bought some trousers for work in Denton a couple of years ago so I was keen to go back to the Wallis and Dorothy Perkins stores. Bernie was keen to go back to the discount sporting goods store! Well, we bent the plastic a bit with me buying two pairs of Dorothy Perkin’s trousers and Bernie buying two dri-flo tops and a tee shirt for a fraction of what they would ... read more

After a good night’s sleep we awoke to a glorious morning. It was bit early for Kath and Albert to be up and about so we dragged out our maps and guides and started trying to decide where we could visit to take advantage of the great weather. We thought about heading down to Stoke-on-Trent, but then noticed a couple of National Trust properties near Congleton that sounded like they might be worth a visit. After a full English breakfast Albert asked us what we might like to do with the day. We told him that we thought it might be nice to go for a drive down to Little Moreton Hall, a Tudor manor house, near Congleton. Albert thought that sounded OK so we planned to head off straight after a quick visit to the ... read more

OMG, we were surrounded by children on the leg from Singapore to London!! There was a man and his young daughter in front of us, a young boy across the aisle from Bernie and another man and his daughter behind us! My idea of hell. The little darling sitting behind me kicked and pushed the back of my seat for almost all of the 13 hours that this leg took. Despite this irritation I did manage to sleep for some of the flight. When I gave up trying to sleep to the staccato rhythm of kick, kick, kick in the back of my seat I watched ‘Milk’ - another movie that I did not manage to see while it was screening in Melbourne. Finally, we arrived at London Heathrow at 5.30am - Bernie feeling well rested ... read more

We had heard of the Anderton Boat Lift but had never seen it in action or visited the site. It was very well sign posted and when we arrived, we discovered there was a whole Information Centre dedicated to explaining the mechanics of the Anderton Boat Lift, giving the history of the local site. It was very well led out and the historical exhibition and explanatory "hands on" notes were excellent. Unfortunately, when we arrived, the boat lift was not operational (had we arrived a week later it would have been) but the day did have it compensations in that there were fewer visitors around and we had therefore access to all of the facilities without any queuing. But do check the opening times and when the lift is available before you go by going to: ... read more

Well, its 2 days to go before I set off on my trip to Hong Kong and Australia. It has finally hit me that I am going to be away for rather a long time, and I am starting to get a little scared...but still pretty excited about my trip. My bag is pretty much packed, but I still have a couple more things to squeeze in, which will no doubt mean extracting a few non-essential things to leave behind too. I have set up this blog to track my journey as I travel about down under and to keep you all posted on my progress. I look forward to receiving your posts and comments too, so please keep in touch. For those of you I leave behind in the UK, I will miss you all ... read more

On Monday we drove from Chester to the Lake District which was about a 3 hour drive. We set up camp with Maureen, Alex and David. After one or two or three beers we had a reasonably early night in preparation for our mountain walking the next day. Tuesday morning we set off around 11am to climb Catbell and Maiden Moor. They were both sharp but short climbs and windy as hell when we got to the top. We left Maureen and David and climbed the steepest of the 2 - Maiden moor. Once we got to the top we had a few piccies (see insert) and had some nice cheap home made sanga’s and coffee in our awesome thermas! The way down was something else again - imagine snowboarding style but jumping sideways into rocks ... read more
