Dear Richard Head the Manikin, :) I don't know quite how to tell you this, but our romance is over. I have found someone else. I think I first knew it when I saw your weird lung bags, then it just got worse with your strange plastic nose but it was when you started to freak my colleagues out when you were sitting on Mikes chair I knew you had to go. I'm sure you are man enough to see I would prefer a Resusitation Annie and what a bore you are, all the conversations, they were just one sided. I'm returning you in your box with your bag of parts. but I'm holding on to your photo, tshirt and cap as keepsakes and so I have something to dress Annie in. I want you to ... read more

“Nigeria? Isn’t that like really unsafe like do you know what I mean like?” said my taxi driver as he brought me back from Dr Cheese’s office after I had had more vaccines and collected my Malarone malaria pills, “I will be ok” I replied “ I grew up in Slough” On the plus side I am with Jane (one of my bosses) and she knows the Nigeria site so I won’t be on my own. I am not leaving until the 13th March 2011 but there are many things I need to do to ensure that I will be ready when I get out there, I will be attending a First aid Train the Trainer course the week beforehand to enable me to be able to teach others in first aid, without this I am ... read more

Hi! And we're back - not entirely as expected, but with a new name, and some more ideas... We're now contemplating the Silk Road for the next in the Gray Railway Journeys series. As to how we approach it, that's a different matter - currently it's a similar approach to the trans-siberian. When do we want to go? Which places are critical? Is the route even viable? in answer to those questions: 1) slightly later thatn the Trans-Siberian - we think - weather to be further investigated! most likely late spring 2) Samarkand seems to be the most critical - so far.... 3) the route is viable, but at this point a little variable....further investigations required here too! and not via Iran currently - although my personal preference would be, given time, to take in locations ... read more

At last I've finished processing all of the photos!!! It's take more than 8 months, but at last I've got through several thousand photos, and processed them all - I've not put all of them onto Flickr - don't panic - only 600 of them, showing the entire journey from London to Hong Kong. Take a look at the photos in one set here: TSR in one set or broken down into sections: TSR in sections Or you can download a kml and view them in Google Earth on mapMyflickr: Dave Gray's Photos Thanks for reading! Hopefully I'll be back at some point with another grand journey! David... read more

mapMyflickr - geotagged images in Google Earth We've created a new way of viewing photos after developing this from the trans-siberian trip - mapMyflickr is a way of showing photos from flickr which have been geotagged by downloading a link to browse within Google Earth. You can view sets by interestingness, or just the geotagged pictures in your current view. We've just got the site up and running - currently in beta, so please drop an email to beta(at)mapmyflickr.com, or message me if you're interested in taking a look. We're after any feedback - either positive, negative, or just suggestions for improvements! We're also working on a Google Maps photoset browser, which will be along imminently... Cheers, Dave... read more

Google Earth/Flickr Picture Show OK, all is looking good! We now have a working flickr/google earth plugin. Peter has managed to put together a php script to allow Google Earth to dynamincally update from Flickr. What that means is that when we add new pictures, and have them geo-tagged (tagged with the location, according to GPS location) that they will be automatically show on Google Earth. http://tsr.no-ip.org/flickr.kml is the link, and all you need to do when you click on it is make sure you have Google Earth installed, then select "Open with Google Earth". It'll take up to a few minutes to update the photos, but then you'll find thumbnails of the photos in the locations they were taken, and clicking on them will give you a larger version...enjoy! (And well done Peter - he ... read more

So this is it! The point of no return; we dropped the bike off to James Cargo at Heathrow for shipping to Anchorage via Minniapolis and Chicago. For safety reasons the bike has to go with less than 2 litres of fuel, and nothing in the panniers. There is something very disconcerting about riding round the M25 with the range on the bike flashing ------ which is what it does after it drops below 1! The sat nav said still 6 miles to James Cargo, but we got there so all is well. Sitting in the wharehouse were a number of fellow travellers bikes including Paul's and Chris and Danielles already crated from their drop off in Manchester. We had arranged to meet Max a fellow traveller at Heathrow as he was dropping his bike off ... read more
