And now all is really coming together, we have crossed most things off the "To Do" list...we have the passports collected, with all 4 visas attached, all nice and shiny and new :) Peter's passport is winging it's way to Chamonix....we hope! Fingers crossed the courier gets it there in one piece. We also pretty much have all equipment we need - I've got several piles of things sitting in the living room now - tupperware pots, cup-a-soups, noodles...all the recommended stuff...and of course, perhaps most importantly a jar of Marmite. We're ordering the currency now, Roubles and US$, Yuan & Euros we have, Togrogs we'll get when in Ulan Bator. We have solar power chargers and batteries galore, ear plugs and eye masks, plastic folding bottles, and velcro straps, stuff bags, ziploc bags, wash ... read more

As of last weekend the (5th April), we now have s lsightly more detailed itinerary, we've started actually working out what we want to do on our stops (not that we get that long on each stopover - so best make the most!) It's actually time to start booking hotels/hostels as required, but we're going to do some once we arrive...we're pretty confident that we should be able to sort places to stay in Listvyanka (next to Lake Baikal), once we get there...possibly the Baikal Hotel.....possibly some kind of B&B....the aim is to cruise down the river once we arrive, get the hotel sorted and then potter round Listvyanka, mayabe taking a boat trip on Baikal....and if we're feeling REALLY brave maybe having a dip in the water....f**king cold in May I believe..... Ulan Bator, we ... read more

OK....and back again. Right, we now have pretty much finalised the itinerary, after some deliberations, the last week we have now decided will be arrival in Beijing, and then 3.5 days there, with the plan being to leave for Xi'an on Tuesday May 19th...while there we intend to see the terracotta army, and the temples and mountains of the region (or as much as is feasible in a couple of days!!!) Once we're done there, Dad will be leaving to return to Beijing, and Peter and I will travel on to Hong Kong, via Guangzhou, and then a day seeing some of HK, before leaving to return home on Saturday the 23rd...(at which point I have a wedding reception to attend!).....phew! busy busy! The visa situation is all looking good too, barring my last minute realisation ... read more

OK....so we're back again....now things are getting interesting - I keep getting all excited about how soon it is...only 40-odd days () Peter and I have been trying to put together some GoogleEarth KMZs (route maps) for the trip, seeing as we have thus far only found one, very well done, and very thorough link ( http://www.gearthblog.com/blog/archives/2005/12/ ), but not showing the trans-mongolian link (via Ulan Ude), which is what we are doing... The split to fill in the blanks on the route (for GoogleEarth) is: Peter - Ulan Bator - Beijing Me - London - Moscow (If you've ever tried doing waypoints on GoogleEarth...that is very time consuming! But we are getting there. Peter's almost done his end...I'll get mine done this week. Translating train timetables to which railway lines we are on...ouch!) So, very ... read more

OK...well we have now started getting notifications on the tickets and visas, we've now received notification that we should be able to collect the Mongolian visas later on this week...no news on the Russian or Belarussian visas yet... We did however receive a most amusing email regarding the tickets for collection for Ulan Bator to Beijing: Tickets for Ulan Bator - Beijing leg will be issued in Ulan Bator a week before the actual departure of the train. The address in Ulan Bator , where the tickets can be collected from ! Our new office address is Room #20, Building 13 Sukhbaatar street, Ulaanbaatar. But it is difficult to find our location by above address. Because in Mongolia we don't used to talk address by street and building number. This is 3 floor blue gray building ... read more

Well, we have been planning the Trans-Siberian trip for a while, so it's a bit of a late start for the blog, but better late than never. The planning started last September, when Dad suggested that he, my brother (Peter) and I do the trans-siberian trip together, it's something he's always wanted to do, and certainly after thinking about it I became attracted to the idea! Initially we needed to decide when to do the trip, and fairly quickly we decided the middle of summer or winter would not be the best time, so came to the conclusion spring would be the best bet, with May being fairly optimal for weather right the way from Russia to Beijing. The next stage was working out any essential places to stop, and fairly quickly we decided that we'd ... read more

14th August 2008 Today we will be leaving for dubai which is the first stop on our way to the olympics. We shall be spending 2 days in dubai. We will be arriving in dubai tomorrow morning and so i shall update the blog tomorrow with our first set of pictures and videos. Well we were in a rush to the airport only to find out when we got there, there was a black out at Heathrow. Heathrow lives up to its name. So all the computers went down. So we had to get a coach to Gatwick and then fly from Gatwick. The actual flight was quite a rough ride at times as there was a-lot of turbulence. ... read more

2 years ago (in Nov 2005) I posted a blog on travelling from Vancouver, BC to Seattle, WA for only USD$4. Today, I have a similar acheivement. I managed to travel from Slough to Bluewater, Millenium Dome and Thames Barrier for only £3! This trip is very similar to my Vancouver-to-Seattle trip 2 years ago because this time I made use of public buses extensively again. I'm very grateful to Transport for London because of the oyster daily price capping for buses. (If you use the oyster card "pay as you go" to make multiple journeys on buses from 04:30 to 04:30 the next day, the cost of all journeys will be capped at £3.) Thanks to the price capping, I could travel from Slough (the western end of the London bus network) to Bluewater (the ... read more

well the bags are packed and were waiting to go. This will be our journal to anyone sad enough to want to follow us as we gingerly make our way to foreign soil. We woud like to say here and now, we intend to show off, big up, overexude, and generally try to piss off as many peolpe as possible while sunning ourselves, drinking to excess and being an obnoxsoius nuisence to anyone who is not Anglo Saxon, and that's just Dionne! Also, I can't see a spell check and Magna Carta secondary seems a long time ago. If we can be bothered we will post our second blog in Hong Kong. Pete couldnt fly us down (thank god) so we should get there!!... read more
