Richard and I are setting off on another cruise this weekend. New cruise line for us - P & O ... will the PO start the word POsh or POor? Posh we hope. First time without a balcony but a big window so at least we can see when to run out on deck. New destination - Norway ... lots of lovely cragginess we hope. But meanwhile, we're only going as far as M&S. New clothes on order. Getting seriously excited now. Roll on Saturday.... read more

Just 4 weeks to go until our long anticipated holiday in Ecuador and the Galapagos. Eric and I are meeting up with Bill and Jude, who we met 2 years ago on our Peru trip, for what we expect to be another fantastic holiday. We leave on my birthday (July 25th) to fly to Quito via Amsterdam - so no doubt the evening will be spent downing a glass or two at Schipol to anaesthetize ourselves for the long overnight flight ahead. The plan in Ecuador is to spend a few days in and around Quito, with an overnight trip to the cloudforest to see lots of birds and wildlife, followed by an 8 day Galapagos cruise, then back to the mainland for the journey down the spectacular Avenue of the Volcanoes, ending up in Cuenco, ... read more

From http://www.bootsnall.com/travelstories/africa/dec00mtmeru1.shtml "I don't know if I like this," remarked Neil, my hiking partner. "I've never liked exposed heights. I don't know if I can make it." I sympathized with him. While our surroundings were awe-inspiring, they inspired a lot of fear as well. To our left, the soft black volcanic sand sloped away at an almost 45° angle until, many hundreds of metres below, it plummeted over a completely vertical cliff-face. To our right, the same steep open sand slope extended down to the tree line far, far below us. We were walking along a knife-edge ridge, as screaming winds threatened to blow us off our path down to the forest. ' I'm properly scared of heights. I think that may cause some problems. 'However tall it once was, it certainly erupted sideways, rather like ... read more

Here we are, back in Reading, just about recovered from jet lag, and looking back over what was a fantastic trip. What are our thoughts/impressions of our once in a lifetime holiday? Well, firstly, this is definitely just the beginning, not the end. We will definitely be back to explore more of this beautiful country. Three weeks gave us a wonderful taster, but there is so much more we would like to explore, and at a more leisurely rate. Secondly - this was first and foremost a celebration of family, and a voyage of discovery of the contributions Harpers have made to the colonisation of New Zealand. To think of all the miles we travelled by car, covering huge distances, and to consider how the Bishop covered that same ground, his diocese being most of South ... read more

Well, finally it's almost time to leave on our epic voyage to NZ. We have planned to do this for so long that it seems really weird, and still quite unreal that on Friday we'll actually be on our way. We (Denise and Eric) are flying to Auckland to spend 5 days on North Island, before travelling on to Christchurch where hopefully we will meet up with Alan and Ralph, who are unable to join us until the following week. We will then spend 2 weeks travelling around South Island, spending Christmas in Queenstown, before returning to UK on New Year's Day. The focus of our trip is the family celebrations for direct descendants from around the world on Dec 15th/16th to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the arrival of Eric's great great grandfather there as ... read more
