Today will probably be the most dull blog so far to read and yet it was such a fantastic day. Due to our late night yesterday, we didn't even get up till after midday. When we did get up, we chatted to the English guy for quite a while and didn't finish breakfast till around 2pm. We were half planning to go and see Odessa's beach, but the weather was miserable so we used it as an excuse to spend the day around the hostel. There are only three of us in the hostel now, us and a really nice Brummy. The staff are really friendly and quite chatty so it is quite easy to spend a day lazing around. I found a magazine so we laid on the bed and listened to music whilst reading. ... read more

We arrived in Odessa around nine after a night of dozing on and off. The bus station is too far away from the centre to walk so we looked around for a microbus. We had to battle through a group of taxi drivers every time we stepped out of the safety of the station. We approached two police officers and asked how to get to the centre. A man that was standing with them said that you couldn't get a Bus and that a taxi would cost $20-$30 which we laughed at and walked away. A phone call to Black sea hostel and they told us which Bus came nearest. We arrived at the hostel and the girl on the desk invited us to join them for breakfast. We gladly accepted and sat and ate whilst ... read more

day3/Easter monday evening we arrived late at Odessa bus station - had no money and no idea where we were heading (didn't have adress of youth hostel where we wanted to stay on us - yes, not ideal. my fault for not printing it) - first thing we did after getting of the bus and picking up the luggage was trying to find a working cash machine - found one inside the bus station, one that worked (even with foreign bank cards - lucky us!!) - not-completely-hopeless me had decided (after looking on Odessa map in the Eastern European Lonely Planet) to tell taxi driver to drive us to a point in the centre from which 3 hotels wouldn't be far - when we got to that point it was around 11.30 - we paid ... read more

Hello all. Just a quick entry from Odessa where we have spent a few days before returning to Germany. We took the train here from Kiev. I thought it might be a bit odd to suddenly eat up the miles after the slower progress on bicycles, but I was wrong. We slipped straight back into travelling quickly and even found ourselves complaining at the slow rate the train seemed to move at through the night. Taking a night train was an interesting experience, the little cabin we were in seemed quite ornate for its purpose with patterned carpet, frilly curtains and the like. But it was uncomfortably hot and there was no water or decent bathroom facitilies. Suffice to say we were pleased to reach Odessa the next morning. The hostel we've stayed in here is ... read more

I used to know this friend, Henry since college back home. He lives in Ukraine. Did not think much of setting up a meeting before I left home because of sporatic contact. Yet, I managed to call a friend in Hawaii who confirm her sister's phone number. Her sister lives in Dalat where my friend's extended family live in. I got a hold of my Henry's sisters who I met when I was in Vietnam visiting them 16 years ago then I got my friend's contact number in Ukraine. I could not tell which city He lives in now. The last address I had was that he lived in Odessa. Yet, the phone number I was given isn't Odessa city code. I tried to call, and the call did not go through at first then got ... read more

Day 51, 21st July. Stepova - Kamjalka - Odesa We sat tight in the tent because the mozzies were waiting en-mass outside hungry for our blood! At about 10am, when it had warmed up somewhat, we packed up quickly but still got bitten quite a lot before getting onto the open road. There was a horrendous headwind and the temperature registered 42 Celsius on Rory’s cycle-computer! Scott was in a bad way again and needed to rest very often in the shade. It was a hard 40 miles before we were negotiating the outer suburbs of Odesa. Just before the centre, I changed DM100 into Hryvna, the unpronounceable Ukrainian currency, and then we headed along the leafy streets and found ourselves at the Potemkin Steps. In Mick O’Neil’s Irish Bar a pint of Guinness went down ... read more

It becomes very clear that second-class train travel in Ukraine is worlds apart from being hauled around the country in plaztkart (плацкарть), or third class. The wagons’ hallway windows are decked with burgundy drapes and embroidered valences reading the city of origin, L’viv (Лъвïв), however framed with cheap plastic flowers. In spite of a torn radio knob blasting the latest Ukrainian hip-hop, I managed to turn the “music” off and discovered the reading lights work wonderfully on each of the four couchettes in my private compartment. Mrs. Doubtfire’s evil twin runs the car like a drill sergeant, dishing out tea and separating passengers such as myself from the local currency to satisfy some mysterious supplement not paid up at the ticket window before departure. Toilets are certainly an improvement; the escaping foul odor is only half ... read more
