Dag 1 dag na aankomst Adres: Hotel Val Sinestra CH-7554 Sent Zwitserland 0041-818663105 Poeh hé, vandaag zijn we van het hotel naar Zuort gelopen (dorp - 2 huizen). Hier hebben even iets gedronken.

After our quick change of plans, we diverted to Zurich this evening in lieu of St. Moritz. Chizzy and Bryan were very gracious in accomodating us a day early. We met Tolsty the cat. The only picture we have of him is blurry, which should tell you something. The other pictures from this evening are my experiments with tripod and long exposure...... read more

Today we took the Glacier Express from Zermatt to....Chur. Thought I was going to say St. Moritz, didn't you? Well, we bought the GE add on to our Swiss rail pass for a hefty additional fee and our understanding was that it wouldn't require us to use 1 of our 5 rail pass days. The GE ticket we had said Zermatt to Disentis which I questioned from the start, but the Europe Rail folks said it would get us all the way to St. Moritz. When the train stopped in Disentis (about halfway along the 8.5 hour route), a new crew took over representing a different rail company. The conductor came through to check tickets again and requested our ticket to St. Moritz. We showed him what we had and he said - you guessed it ... read more

After our expedition up the Matterhorn, we walked around the village of Zermatt. There is a glacial river running through the center of town with hills rising on either side dotted with chalets. There are no street addresses, so you just have to follow signs at the intersections and wind your way uphill and around corners to find anything. To get to some of the hotels, you enter a tunnel alongside the river then ascend an elevator 5 stories to the lobby. The tunnels are lined with rooms for ski storage. The main street is cobblestone. It was here that we found Grampi's restaurant for dinner, serving Swiss-Italian cuisine at reasonable prices. Afterwards, we stopped into a pub with free Wi-Fi to check some email and grab a hot cocoa. The band on stage wasn't half ... read more

Today we conquered the Matterhorn! Well, we didn't summit it per se, but did take the cable car up to the ski area for fantastic views of the peaks and Zermatt in the valley below. The pictures really do tell the tale better than I can. Words like magestic and awesome spring to mind... We were up at about 9000 feet so it was very cold and windy up there. Cheryl and I immediately got altitude headaches but the guys seemed to be fine. Another example of our finely tuned female senses. We decided to walk the second stage back down to the village via a field of sheep and a forest of changing leaves. I tried my hand at yodeling...didn't get quite the echo effect I was going for but fun nevertheless! ... read more

We awakened to thick fog over the lake today. Only had the morning to explore before catching the train to Zermatt, so we walked over to the Old Town area to look around. We found a creperie for breakfast with a fantastic menu, however the proprietor explained they don’t actually serve crepes until after noon so we settled for crossaints and tea instead. A note on the crossaints: French crossaints taste like butter flavored air. They are so light that when you take a bite, the dough expands back to its original shape instead of sinking in like the knock-offs in the States! The cathedral was nearby so we stepped in to check it out; it was built in the 1300s! The Chapel of Macabees off to the side is amazingly beautiful. As a bonus, you ... read more

The weather has been getting colder with clouds every day for the past week. im starting to think about buying a scarf but i think i can hold out for a bit longer. Last night i met Sam at the train station at around 8 o'clock. he's the first friend to have visited me so i was pretty excited to see him. he was just travelling through with his Aunt so he was only here for the night and half the day this morning but it was still fun to hang out with a familiar face. i had to show them around and realized that i dont know exactly where everything is yet, but i did manage to find a store that sold him a switchblade and a colothing retailer for some other essentials. Yes, we are back in Basel, Evi's home town. She was actually born in Zürich, but considers Basel her home since she was a young girl. Anyway, after two simple flights from SFO to Newark to Zürich, we arrived in good shape. We celebrated Yom Kippur with Evi's cousins and brother there, then after releasing all our sins for the previous year, the next morning we took the one-hour train to Basel, where we will stay on and off for the next month. The weather in Switzerland is cool in the morning, but sunny and warm in the afternoon. Very invigorating! Now, here are some photos.... read more

Firstly as we left Austria we entered into one of the smallest countries in the world, Lichtenstein. It is only 6km from west to east, so it was only going to be a short stop, as we dropped into the capital city of Vaduz. It proved to be an expensive lunch as we sat in the town directly below Schloss Vaduz, before some of us got our passports stamped and stocked up on some supermarket supplies. On the bus once more, charged with Swiss francs (which I would say is the best looking money I have come across along with our own Aussie dollars) we travelled onwards through Switzerland on our way to Lucerne. We stopped in and made our way to purchase some Swiss paraphenalia, mainly Swiss Army knives and Swiss watches, which I ... read more

14th, 15th and 16th of October, 2005. Lucerne, Switzerland. Tour Day 3 As we travelled from France and into Switzerland - all the while with the most endlessly blue skies I have ever seen in my life - the landscape gradually went from incredibly green hills to amazingly green mountains, and in the distance you could see blue Alps with white snowcaps. The road began to carve its way through endless mountains, and by the time we reached Lucerne I think we may have spent more time in darkly lit tunnels than on open-air roads. Lucerne turned out to be a really pretty little town. We stopped at their most renowned monument, the Lõwendenkmal, meaning The Dying Lion Of Luzern, which is a sculpture carved into the sandstone cliff's edge by Danish artist Bertel Thorvaldsen in ... read more
