If you want to find where all that money in the Swiss bank accounts goes to, then Zurich is where it probably is. Zurich is all class and all money. Never have I seen such insane prices for watches just as a window display (120,000 Francs). Business men in their diamond encrusted suits walk the main street while walking past a oddly dressed man shouting obscenities and pulling the finger towards them. Among this is a beautiful city with beautiful buildings and a gorgeous green tinged lake to accompany.
So I guess it comes in handy to have a friend who lives there. The unfortunate thing it was only for a night, but better than nothing.
We caught the train from Interlaken to Zurich at the punishing time of 7am on a Sunday morning, to maximize our time their. We arrived and took the tram to Jenny's apartment and enjoyed a nice breakfast with her flatmates and friends. Later on we caught the train to the top of Uetliberg for some beautiful 360 degree views overlooking Zurich with the mountains hidden behind the ominous black rain clouds headed straight for us. I am sure if it was clear weather I would
have been even more blown away. Its a popular hill to walk, run or cycle up to the the view is the reward.
We headed back to the house because it started raining and we weren't really in the mood for doing much.
After a few of the others fell asleep while watching back to the future 3, we got our act together and had a nice dinner with our gracious hosts. The next day we were due to depart to Basel but not till later in the afternoon. Jeremy knew a place where you could rent bikes for free next to the main train station, so we tracked it down and set off visiting Zurich by bike. Zurich city is quite beautiful, untouched by the war, it retains its old buildings neatly transformed in boutique shops. The accompanying river in to the lake is a beautiful turquoise.
We rode up the main shopping street where you can continue looking for the lost expensive watch on window display and only dream of spending ridiculous amounts of money on the latest fashion.
The lakeside is the happening place to chill out, eat and even swim.
We stopped for a delectable Movenpick ice cream moment before
returning the bikes and saying farewell to Jenny and the others.
We boarded the short train to Basel where Jeremy was airport bound and I was due to stay a further day. It had been an amazing time with Jeremy and I was so thankful for the opportunity and it was something that I will cherish for the rest of my life, but sadly it had to end.
I continued to walk through town, getting to see a bit more than the few hours when we had first arrived. I met with a friend for a bite to eat and then set off back to Silas's house for sole more couchsurfing. I was out of the door fairly early and knew that the borders of Germany and France were pretty close so I walked north along the river and along the industrial area and arrived at the Three countries corner. A quick photo shoot and I walked back along the river till I reached the city. I spent the best part of the day wondering the streets and sitting along the banks of the river and watching daily life glide by, seeing water skiers and shipping boats float by, and the occasional
swimmer taking a cool dip along the edge.
Basel is a nice place although not a lot happening, well at least that was my opinion. The whole of Switzerland, whether it's in the mountains or in the cities, is a pretty unique country. My other Swiss blogs have bought back amazing memories to my friends and family who have been there. And I am sure when people mention Switzerland, I will always remember the great time I spent with my brother there.
