First our apologies for the long silence. We are still on track going through the various things we want to do, but are getting a bit lazy writing. So our story continues .... After the wonderful and challenging mountain project in Zermatt, getting our feet out from the heavy hiking boots was indeed a nice feeling. It was time, after all our Alpine adventures, which happened in the German and Romansh language speaking areas of Switzerland, to introduce Nui to the French Swiss part, called La Romandie. We decided to do this with our bicycles; actually a combination of riding the bicycle and taking the train. Swiss trains are equipped to accommodate passengers who want to take their bicycles ... read more

Oh goodness, where to begin? I finished my ISP, survived my presentation, officially completed my junior year of college (scary!) and left Switzerland. The last two weeks of the program we had presentations and then had the afternoons off. Lots of exploring in Geneva and Nyon, including one last hurrah at the UN library, the Botanical Gardens (they have the coolest carousel ever!), Geneva plage, Old Town, explored Versoix and Coppet, CERN (saw the computer that first used the World Wide Web), got lost looking for a clock that then turned out to be under repair, found La Jonction (where the Rhone and the Arve rivers meet – they don’t mix because of the silt in one and not in the other so there is a very distinct line – Julia and I also found the ... read more

On Thursday we had a raclette dinner with all the host families in the Nyon castle. Raclette is delicious. For those of you that don’t know it is essentially just cheese and potatoes. They melt/brown the cheese under a heat lamp (a huge cheese wheel) and then scrape it off serving by serving onto the potatoes (see the pictures for a better idea of what it’s like). We all ate sooo many servings! Cheese overload (I didn’t know that was even possible). This weekend we decided to be good students and stay in Geneva since we had a paper due the next week. Mine was about HIV/AIDS, and specifically AIDS orphans, as a threat to global security. It was actually really interesting to research and write! I had an interview with the HIV/AIDS advisor for Medecins ... read more

The first.... So as a first blog i think i should start with where i am now, Nyon a little town on the shores of Lake Geneva in quaint Switzerland. Despite it being early August it is raining today, which makes this town seem even more docile and sleepy. It's also our National Holiday day, there are supposed to be the annual fireworks tonight and candle lit latterns with the swiss flag on, sausages, mustard and beer.... In November I plan to head off on my 1 year trip "around the world" to see all the places I've read so much about and to meet all the people, the happy ones we don't hear about on the news! It's all too easy to stay at home, and forget that the world is not just a terrible place ... read more

How many times has some amazing sight caused me to remark to the empty seat next to me? My imagination sometimes fills the seat with the friend who would appreciate the particular sight most. I must admit that I have grown accustom to virtual companions. The thought of having an actual person filling the empty seat causes some hesitation. I am set in my ways as a traveler. I have lots of don'ts: don't chat with people wearing uniforms, don't stand out in crowds. I get impatient when people ask strangers long complicated questions in idiomatic English. These thoughts weighed on my mind as I waited in the Geneva airport for Debra's plane from Boise to arrive. I tested her mettle right away by taking her from the Geneva airport directly to the Paléo Festival in ... read more

ENG: We're getting closer and closer to the big departure, on Monday 26th February. 'Till then, we'll have plenty of things to keep ourselves busy. 12/10/05 - In Switzerland we said farewell to our petite cousins (distant cousins) - Jean, Beatrice, Jean-Frédéric and my Uncle Robert at a restaurant on the banks of Lake Bienne. We discovered that Swiss cuisine is not at all comparable to the French food we have grown used to. Jean- Frédéric was on his way to Lausanne to start his studies at a business college, so we all tagged along on the drive from Alsace to Lausanne. We followed Jean’s green bus through Alsace to Switzerland, via the many tunnels that finally get you to Lausanne. The Swiss don’t just put holes in their cheese; they also put them through their mountains. The many tunnels through the Alps certainly make road travel a lot faster than if you had to drive over the Alps. We left ... read more
