All right, so hopefully everyone's already aware that I am safely in Switzerland. Now, I am sitting in the UN Library with a bit of free time, so some classmates and I are here checking email, blogging and... well... facebooking, of course, for free! Bear with me through this entry as I am still getting used to the keyboard. I'm getting better! But, for example, that would have been-- Iàm getting better++ So zou see what I mean__ hahaha$$ Anyway, the flight over went ALMOST without any hitches. I am apparently simply not having great luck on this leg of the trip because, of course, they lost one of my bags during the transfer. Fortunately, however, they were able to deliver my bag back to me last night already... so no problems, there! Besides, flying into ... read more

after two weeks in croatia enjoying the sun it was always going to be a bit of a realitly check getting on a plane to the next country, destination Geneva Switzerland. after a stumble in split with our ezyjet flight beinf delayed for an hour we arrived in geveva around midnight. we headed straight to a cab to get to our appartment, i had pre arranged to have the key left in a safe box as there would be no one on reception. we were a little shocked whilst we were in the cab we came up to what looked like a boader crossing, it was! we didn't realise when booking our accomodation that we were actually staying on the french side of the boarder, there was no problem here it just ment that we had ... read more

Yesterday I got to go into the ATLAS experiment! It was quite the experience. The security there is incredibly high. They actually have a system that only lets you in if you are verified via a retina scan. It took me three tries to figure out just how to stand, etc. so that my retina scan would work properly. Renato, my advisor, says it took him three tries on his first time too. I can't tell if he made that up to make me feel better or if that was actually the case. I tired to figure out how to get to the room I was in on the virtual tour online (http://atlasexperiment.org/), but it walks right past my door. If you want to get close, head to the tavern, take the elevator to level one, ... read more

June 23, 24, 2008 Geneva, Switzerland Our travels took us from Bern along the lakes to Geneva which is surrounded by rolling hills and farmland. Grain, grapes and fruit trees. Geneva sits on the southern most lake shore of Lake Le Leman, the biggest fresh water lake in Europe. Geneva is a few kilometers from France ( in fact our room was in France ) and less than a 100 Km via the Mont Blanc tunnel to Italy. This is a very political center with the United Nations, Red Cross and every NGO you can imagine all centered here. There are currently over 16,000 civil servants from various countries living in Geneva. This is a very nice city. Expensive, but nice. We took an afternoon city tour that included a small cruise on the lake to ... read more

Friday 13th June We arrived in Geneva around 2pm and went to our hotel (Best Western Strasbourg) which was close to the train station. Unfortunately Brenda’s teeth were quite sore so we needed to find a dentist open on Friday afternoon / night. Our first attempt was a little comical, the closest emergency dental clinic recommended by the hotel concierge turned out to be a school dental clinic. Luckily the guy there was very good and recommend another clinic, made an appointment and told us how to get there. That took up most of the night and we didn’t really feel like doing much sight seeing. The next day it we had a look around the lake and took the trams around town. One of the perks of the hotel was they gave us a pass ... read more

For the past two days, we have been obsessing over travel plans. Tonight, we booked our very first weekend trip! Both of the Jeremys, Brice, Chen, Sam, and I are going to Barcelona the weekend of the 25th. Our flight and hotel combined cost about 300 francs/person. I think it is quite a steal and I am very excited to be going somewhere where my six years of spanish will come in use. Our hotel is a ten minute walk from the beach! Tomorrow, the boys are going to the train station over our lunch hour to book tickets to Paris. We want to go the weekend of July 4th. Once I have plans finalized, I will post them. Also, if my security clearances are good, I will be going to the ATLAS pit tomorrow afternoon. ... read more

Yesterday I had a very low-key day. The last person in our group, Amanda, arrived. She goes to West Point and has a very short summer because of that; she will only be here for a month. However, she is the only girl here who has expressed interest in going shopping, so I plan to shop a lot for that month! After she arrived, a large group of us went walking in the vineyards that border the french part of CERN. It is still so much fun to be able to say I can walk to France! The vineyards are really gorgeous and calming. I have finished with my work for the day. My advisor left me with very little to do because he is gone today. So far, work still consists of programming in ROOT. ... read more

Yesterday I spent most of my time on a beach by the lake. My friend Jake and I rode a boat, which was free with our bus passes, as far as we could down the lake to find the beach. It was absolutely beautiful! The water was a little cold, but I adjusted to swimming quickly. One of the best things about this lake is swans are always swimming there. So I got to swim with swans! I was also very happy to find gelato near where the boats docked. yum! In the evening, Brice, Jake, and I went to old town for the music festival. It was really crowded, and there were all different kinds of stages set up. We heard punk, salsa, and electro all within a few hundred yards from each other. Somehow ... read more

Sorry I've taken so long to write....Today the weather is in the 80's here, so I'm going to be headed to a beach a little ways out of town to relax. As for an update on last week, Leanne and I took a trip to London/Southampton last Friday-Monday morning to visit a friend. I have a confession to make. I almost missed my flight to Geneva from NJ. You see, they had the gate set up in such a way that you had to go down a ramp to get there. I wasn't the only one. There were about 15 people running with me. Why is this relevant? Well, two months ago I waited at the wrong gate for JetBlue in Syracuse, NY and ended up hitching a ride to Rochester with two random businesswomen who ... read more
