After spending the day at the beach in barcelona, it was time to get our greatly anticipated train journey to geneva, switzerland. What should have been a 2 hour journey from barcelona to cerbere, became a 3.5 hour journey and we were just in time for the main train. Getting onboard, we were told it was not necessary to book a seat as we could do it on the train, this was the beginning of a travel nightmare. The first hour was quiet and comfortable until the carriage was swarmed with a french orphanage, consequently we lost our seats. 8 hours sat outside a train toilet, on the damp floor was one of the highlights of my life. Although this was a non smoking train, people felt that this section by the door was the smoking ... read more

Spain is having strikes over austerity measures today and our nearest metro route is closed for the day. So with no cheap means to get to the city center, we've been hanging out in The Sant Boi suburb of Barcelona. This blog will detail some highlights of Geneva where we spent our last couple of days. If you can catch a soccer match at Stade de Geneve then do. It offers an intimate setting (only 30,000 capacity). At first it is difficult to gauge how large the city is. It seems to lined with street after street of 7 or 8 story buildings surrounding a beautiful lake, but we ended up walking from one side of geneva to the other in 30 min. You can see most of what the city has to offer in 2 ... read more

All aboard! Jody and I trained from Zurich to Geneva yesterday afternoon after a wonderful few days with Karin and her god cousin Steven. The ride across the Swiss countryside was spectacular, and it only got better as the ride went along. With about 20 min left on the ride we came around a corner and came upon lake geneva. It's a pristine clear blue lake surrounded by mountains and lush green vinyards. We arrived at Stade de Geneve just as they opened the gates for an Italy vs. Switzerland friendly soccer game. We sat on the 2nd row just to side of the goal in the visiting fans Italian side. They were great seats except for having to hear viva italia all game and not Hopp Schwiiz. It ended in a 1-1 tie be was ... read more

On Thursday, March 18th we left Rothenberg, Germany for Geneva Switzerland. The rules for bus drivers in Europe are very strict and our driver Luggi needed to take a two-hour break in order to comply with the law. Our mandatory stop turned out to be a great thing and we ended up getting to visit Bern, which is the capital of Switzerland. Bern is a beautiful city. We all had time to split up and take a self-guided tour of the city, exploring shops and restaurants. After a nice break and some great photo opportunities we were back on the bus and headed for Geneva. We arrived in Geneva around 5:30PM, giving us time to check in to the hotel and head out for dinner. The next day was to be a busy one so most ... read more

So much to do, so little time. This entry is primarily so that anyone who checks the blog when I send out the link will actually see something :). I'm using a travel blog, although I doubt I'll be doing much travelling, because a friend pointed out that most blogs own the copyright to what one writes -- this one specifically says I own my own words. Countdown: plane leaves in 74 hours 30 minutes. I still have to purchase some stuff, complete all those tax forms, etc., that I'm not going to have a chance to do for the next 3 months and are due in the interim, and otherwise clear my desk. There is still shopping to do: that's today's task. I have some leads, but still have to find a mosquito net in ... read more

FRIDAY: ST. LUPICIN There Cyntia and I were, sitting in a tiny parish meeting room, surrounded by French people who had just welcomed us in. Upon entering the Catholic catechism meeting late with Christine, we introduced ourselves, and went 360 degrees around the table, doing bisous with every single person there. (note: "bisous" is the European and specifically French tradition of kissing both cheeks of someone when you arrive and depart). Everyone there was so welcoming and curious about us. The Jura mountain region of France, and particularly the tiny town of St. Lupicin hardly ever see foreginers. You could say that coming here is a little like going somewhere like Montana or Kansas in the U.S.--they don't see many tourists, and they were curious why the heck we wanted to come here. Neither Cyntia and ... read more

About two days before I flew out to Switzerland my doctor had told me to avoid eating dairy products to help my sinus go away. He told me it was OK to fly, but of course I naturally didn't tell him that I was going to Switzerland...ya know, the land of cheese and chocolate? The part of my job that I love the most is getting to go overseas on the company's expense. I was in Geneva for a two-day meeting on a Wednesday and a Thursday, so since this was my first time in Switzerland, I though I might as well take the Friday off and schedule my return flight to come back on the Sunday. On Wednesday evening, we were taken out for a traditional Swiss fondue, which happened to be my first ever ... read more

The TGV train ride from Gare De Lyon of Paris to Geneva is a beautiful one...It goes thru fields, forests, lakes, and mountains...It was a smooth and pleasurable ride... I arrived in Geneva at 2:30 pm and met my cousin S at the Station...She took me to the UN headquarters where I took a tour of the Palace of Nations...It was a very interesting and informative one hour tour... Geneva is a beautiful small city with a very international crowd...It is geographically well situated, surrounded by the Alps and Jura mountain ranges (with a view of the Mont Blanc peak), adjacent to Lake Geneva where it flows to the Rhone river, less than 20 kilometers to the border of France and Haute-Savoie... The mountain ski resort/village of Chamonix was our destination on Friday...It was a breathtaking ... read more

Day One Geneva to Milan But now we're in Italy....and I can't yet speak Italian...frustration again! We started this trip with a late taxi, but that has been the only problem...and we still got to the airport in plenty of time...Everyone we dealt with has been extra nice from the United ticket agent to the train conductors. We've had no one bother us or ask us for anything! Not even one taxi driver has approached us! We were able to travel in business class from DC to Geneva, so that was quite wonderful...the seats moved to a completely flat position for sleeping, so we got some rest last night. We arrived in Geneva around 8:00 am, and bought train tickets for Milan right in the airport. We had to change trains in the city center. In ... read more

Hell all! I am now in the beautiful city of Genevè, Switzerland. And I realize I have not blogged for a long time. So here goes....Last time I blogged we were in Greece...which was actually only two days ago... Well, first of all we took a train, actually towards North to Ancona, Italy to catch a ferry boat to Greece. And then once on the boat we explored the deck, went swimming (in the worlds smallest swimming pool...still fun tho :P) and slept on the floor of the deck...which was actually pretty fun as well...we watched a beautiful sunset late at night and enjoyed the bluegreen grecian waters. And most of all, there was a disco on the boat! They played a bunch of Greek pop songs and international hits (mostly techno or house) and there ... read more
