So we got up early and went to Bre's for the final cleanup then off to Stockholm to drop off the car. Stockholm is a crazy city to get around. Bridges and tunnels everywhere. Yah, and try to say the names of the streets. Lastmakargatan, Stora Nygatan, Tegnergatan... Bre just laughs when we try. Oh well. We had to fill up the car and Ted put in E85 for the Toyota we were driving. Not realizing that it is 85% ethynol not 85% gas and 15% ethynol. Crap. Hope the car doesn't burn up... We got to our hotel and cleaned up for dinner. We were all starving. So we asked for recommendations in Sodermalm so we could walk around the shops there after dinner. The guy at the counter found this Italian restaurant that wasn't ... read more

So up again early to head out to Lake Malaran for a BBQ with Bre. We stopped by the market for a one-time BBQ, some steaks, grill cheese, fruit and such. Yes, they have grill cheese. You actually throw it on the grill for a few minutes to get grill marks and then slice it up. It's like Tillamook squeeky cheese. Weird but good. We seemed to have gotten a defective grill cuz it took about an hour for the briquettes to finally heat up. Two other picnic parties had started their grill after us and they were almost finished eating by the time we started cooking. Oh, well. There were lots of young kids at the lake. Some actually were swimming. It was about 68 degrees. The sun came and went so either you were ... read more

8:00am never came so soon! I could have slept another few hours but we have things to do and places to go. We are staying at a nice home with a great host, Kristina. She makes sure we have fresh baked bread and sliced cheese each morning for breakfast. The typical breakfast is bread, meat and cheeses or yougart and granola. We have the whole half of the house. It kind of like a duplex. They have an old German Shepard named Fanta. She's the mellowist dog I've ever seen. She stays on our side of the house and greets us when we come home each night. Kinda cool. So we went to take Bre some breakfast and then to assess what needs to be pack and shipped and what can go on the plane. We ... read more

This day was a blur. 18 hours of travel time does wonders to your mental state. Bre met us at the airport around 12:30am Sweden time. About 10:30pm at home. Because we couldn't get into our B&B until 5:30pm we went to Bre's appartment and changed clothes and decided to check out downtown Uppsala. We stopped by the river for lunch and watch the bike riders. Biking is a big thing here. Too tired to do much more, Ted and I went to Bre's to take a nap and then to our B&B to take a shower. Out again for dinner by the river then home early to sleep. Nothing too exciting. I'll add pictures when I upload later. ... read more

So I've taken a break from packing and getting the house in order to get my blog started. I blew off doing one when we went to Chile and I really wish now I had spent the time to get one done then so I'm making sure I get one done this time. We start out around 9:00am in the morning to Seattle, fly to Paris, fly to Stockholm and met Bre at the airport. Can't wait to see her! Not that I don't Skype with her every Sunday since she left but it's just not the same. Our plans are to stay around Uppsala for a week then off to sail the Stockholm Archipelago for the 2nd week. Should be an awesome time! Take care and see you all soon!... read more

The date was August 10, 1628. It was a beautiful Sunday morning and Stockholm’s many shorelines were crowded. After three years of hard work and the felling of over one thousand oaks, Sweden’s newest warship and the crown jewel of their powerful fleet sat at the quay below the royal castle ready to sail. At 69 meters in length and 1210 tons of displacement, the Vasa, named after Sweden’s royal family, was one of the most imposing warships in the world. Its 64 large guns ensured that it would be a formidable power on the seas. Its ornately carved hull was a work of art meant to intimidate anybody that would come against it. The ship was loaded and its guns were all tied fast as it was kedged to a point near modern-day Slussen. All ... read more

I admit that I knew very little about Sweden when I stepped off of the plane at Arlanda airport near Stockholm. What I did know had come to me in a series of stories and pleasant memories that I had collected over the years, usually second hand, from one of my sister’s best childhood friends. My sister’s friend, Maria, had moved to America from Sweden when she was young and she and her family frequently went back for a visit. Most of her earlier stories came to me through my mom, perhaps in an attempt to free me from the closed-minded prison of ignorance that I was drifting into – I was an aspiring redneck in those days. As the years passed we all went our own ways in search of ourselves. I eventually shed my ... read more

29/6/09 We arrived back in Uppsala in the early afternoon. Our friends had made plans to go for a swim at the lake, which sounded great as it was quite hot. We got ourselves organised and drove down, Linnea had her mum's fancy black convertable car and Karen went with her. It's funny how Scandinavians make the most of what little Sun they get by flocking to small, grassy/muddy beaches. We had a nice swim, relaxed in the Sun and took a stroll through the surrounding area. 30/6/09 Tuesday was in the lead up to our final days in Sweden, and we had arranged to meet Jen for one last hurrah. First off, though, we hooked up with more of John and Linnea's friends for a few beers in the park (which is quite normal over ... read more

After two and a half months in Sweden I felt the need to spread my wings a little outside the confines of Stockholm and its inner archipelago (well, Vaxholm to be precise). New partner in crime Rachel was up for a weekend away so we set off to Sweden’s fourth largest city, Uppsala. Uppsala is a city famous for its university, its cathedral and as the long-time home of Carl Linnaeus (for the forgetful scientists among you he was the one that invented the system of binomial classification that is still used in identification of plant and animal species). It’s also smaller than Bromley. A fact which shouldn’t really surprise, given that Sweden has a population of only 9.2 million. Saturday morning dawned and it was due to be one of the hottest weekends of the ... read more
