Where: Silja Ship from Stockholm to Helsinki Temperature: -1C (to be honest this is a bit disappointing… BRING ON THE COLD) Wind: calm 7m/s out of the NNW Dew point: nice try… haven’t a clue I had a great time in Stockholm which is undoubtedly one of the more beautiful world capitals. I would almost venture to say that it is prettier than Vancouver… I know you’re all rolling your eyes at home but it’s true. The one advantage Vancouver has is the mountains but Stockholm has architecture (as you’ll see in the photos) which is stunning… so let’s call it a tie! Stockholm is also one of the most expensive places I have ever been. Their sales tax, are you ready for this?!, is a whopping 25%. Naturally the country is very socialist and manages ... read more

To spend some more time with Mum (including her birthday) Justin and I thought that it would be a good idea to follow Mum to Sweden, where she had an exhibition. We soon found out that Sweden was famous for a number of things including Volvos, ABBA, beautiful people (that was our own deduction) and the Nobel Prize. Saturday 12th November Justin and i flew to Stockholm in the early hours of Saturday morning (love those cheap ryan air flights). After staying the night in our budget hostel (with no toilet paper) we met Mum at the luxurious Radisson Hotel. We arrived bearing flowers and chocolate for her bithday. After stealing the tissues from her room (to replace our lack of toilet paper) we had the beautiful buffet breakfast in the Hotel. After telling the lovely ... read more

A trip to Scandinavia... Stockholm was lovely. This city had the nicest people I have ever come across... from the guy who stamped my passport to our waiter at the restaurant to the salesman I bought shoes from to the girl at the hostel with a greenstone necklace, to the barman at the icebar... So there's a quick 'what I did in Stockholm!' Stockholm in Autumn was stunning (as you'll see in the pics) - it was also very cold... like Wellington with a crisp Southerly... but gorgeous views, people and food. We even ate reindeer - a local delicacy... and it was delicious! and the Absolut Icebar (the first original Absolut icebar from the country of Absolut!) was a place we just had to visit (2 drinks is about as long as you can stay ... read more

Based on some rough estimation, Sherry and I are making the unofficial call that we have each both set a new mark for 'personally-occupied, most northernmost point'. It looks like Stockholm is around 59.333 (you could say '3 repeating' if you're a math brain) degrees north latitude. That's pretty far north! In fact, in all likelihood when we grabbed our bags from the luggage carousel at the airport some 40km north of here, we were probably over 60 degrees north. We expect to restablish a new point of extreme when we travel on Sunday to Uppsala which is farther north. So, here we are in the so-called capital of Scandanavia, at least that's what the airport billboards were proclaiming. As far as I know, there are 3 other (at least) Scandanavian capitals that might compete. We're ... read more

Rather excited as I've just set up my profile on Travelblog.org to document and share my impending journey to become an EFL teacher in Asia and all other traveling. Just feel though it would be a shame to not share some of my more recent past trips with others. Only really going to post photos of these trips and perhaps add some more text at a later date. Stockholm, Sweden: Myself and two mates (and current work colleagues) decided to have a long weekend in Stockholm in September 2005. The weekend was great and I have some fantastic memories, although admittedly most are rather hazy from self-indulgence, the photos speak for themselves! ... read more

We FINALLY arrived in Stockholm after over 24 hours traveling by train to get there. We started out going from Linz back to Vienna, then took a night train from Vienna to Hamburg (which went back through Linz so we actually could've just stayed in Linz and cut nearly 3 hours off of our travel time by jumping on the train in Linz but we didn't realize it until the next morning in Hamburg!!!), missed the Hamburg stop (it was the train steward's fault... she told us the train was 30 minutes late, but it wasn't) and got off the train in a different part of Hamburg, took the subway back to the right Hamburg station, went to Copenhagen, changed trains to get to Malmo (which included the train riding on a ferry across the water), ... read more

Hi Everyone. So Stockholm.. well getting here was an adventure. The night train I was on had some sort of difficulties, never really did figure out what the problem was, but we were stuck in the middle of nowhere for 5 hours waiting for another train to come and take us the rest of the way to Stockholm. The time actually flew by as I met a Swedish woman, a Danish guy, an Australian guy and 2 Americans. We had a great time getting to know each other and pooling all our food for breakfast. The train company then gave us all food vouchers for the train station and Patrick, the Aussie, and I used them to buy beer!! Stockholm is a beatiful city.. I love it!! There are islands and bridges everywhere and they are ... read more

Well, ready or not, today is the day I am departing for Bhutan, and no stupid eye is going in between. My project manager was very reluctant to see me go even though he had okayed my holiday himself, although cleverly pretending not to remember any such arrangements. He also suggested that if I felt that my holiday would be spoiled by a damaged eye I was welcome to continue work on the project instead. Yeah right, fat chance! Instead my bags are packed and it is early rise to catch the bus to Stockholm which departs at 6.30, and all things considered it is a comfortable ride. I succeed in being asleep for the most part. Arriving at Stockholm Central Station I quickly transfer to the airport express train and arrive at Arlanda airport without ... read more

Hey all Well most of you probably though i dropped off the face of the earth. But in actuality i had just gotten lazy. Most of you also know that i am already back. Why so early you ask? Well lots of reasons but mainly because i felt like coming back. So last time we left off was in Budapest. At this point i had already made up my mind to come back the end of the August. Salzburg, Austria Probably the biggest thing here, besides Arnold, is the castle on top of the hill. With spectacular views in every angle, you truly get a sense of how beautiful this place really is. Munich & Berlin, Germany Land of Oktoberfest, sausage, and lots of BMW's, LOTS! Germany is a cool place though. I was in Berlin ... read more
