We’ve seen quite a few people around town wearing white uniforms with cute red scarves around their necks. The Google machine tells us that this is the dress code for the annual festival of the Running of the Bulls at Pamplona, which looks to be less than a hundred kilometres south of here, and it seems that the festival is on right now. There are still four days to go, so we’re not quite sure whether the people we’ve seen have done their runs yet. If they have, the lack of blood stains suggests that they’ve either managed to get hold of some excellent bleach, or they’ve completed their runs successfully, even the toddlers. Further reading suggests we can stop worrying about the toddlers; it seems that almost everyone in Pamplona (and here too apparently) wears ... read more

Our cute little apartment has a washing machine so we decide on a morning of domestics … well that was the plan until we couldn’t find the detergent or the clothes pegs. So it’s off to the supermarket. The detergent is easy, but the pegs, well ….. I think briefly about asking, but surprising as it may seem, “clothes pegs” didn’t make the top 50 or so on my list of important phrases to learn in Spanish. Several supermarkets later I spy some on the shelves, and my long and dangerous (they drive fast here) mission is now complete. But our problems have only just begun. “I don’t know how to work the washing machine”, says Issy. I didn’t do the clothes washing module in either of my engineering degrees, but still all is not lost. ... read more

Today is the last day of our trip, we fly back tomorrow morning. After last night’s wonderful experience with Gaudi’s Park Guell, we were really looking forward to seeing Gaudi’s masterpiece church this afternoon, but first we have a brief excursion just outside of Barcelona to Catalonia to visit Montserrat. Monserrat, the ”Serrated Mountain” is the name of a series of 3 peaks of the Catalan mountain range. It’s highest peak is about 4000 ft. The rock formations are beautiful, and there are three ways to get to the top. There is a cable car, a cog railway, and a couple of roads. Since we have a bus, we naturally took the road. Once at the top, there is a funicular that takes you to the actual peak, but there isn’t really anything at the peak, ... read more

Leon is perhaps not one of the best-known Spanish cities but it deserves to be better known and not just because of the Texas rock band named after the Medieval Kings that hailed from here. Historically it is an important place as it can be considered one of the earliest democratic societies as it established a proper independent judicial system back in Medieval era. It has history back to Roman times, but seems to have hit its peak in the 15th Century. Today it attracts visitors not just due to its history but also because it is a key junction on the Camino de Santiago. On our drive here from Haro we follow one of the popular pilgrim paths and we see many people on the path, despite this not being the best season to walk. ... read more

We hope that zombiness isn’t a permanent state, but it’s hard to be sure as we awake from our travel induced comas in the late afternoon. As we head off to stock up on some supplies from the supermarket, I remark to Issy that it feels like we’re in Europe. Hang on, that comment was a left over from Quebec. We are in Europe, which doesn’t do too much to ease any lingering concerns we might have about zombiness being permanent. Travel is great, well except for the part where you actually have to travel. Arriving at and exploring destinations really is great, but with airports the way they are at the moment, hopelessly understaffed, and the staff that are there hopelessly undertrained, the actual bit where you have to: (1) get there three or four ... read more

Today we left for our final destination – Barcelona. It’s another long bus day, there’s really no way around it, it’s a long way from Costa Del Sol to Barcelona, and the last couple of days have been spent on the bus with a couple of one night stants in Granada and Velencia, but tonight we check in for two nights in Barcelona. This time we made a couple of interesting stops along the way. Our first comfort stop was in a little beachfront town of about 8000 people, with the unfortunate name of Peniscola. At first I thought it was the same name as the Florida city Pensacola, but then I looked closer and realized it was actually spelled like Penis-Cola. Fortunately, the Spanish pronunciation is more like Peh-NIS-co-la, and we’ll leave it at that. ... read more

We land in Lisbon feeling like zombies. We manage to lose Issy’s boarding pass for the next leg not once but twice, but no problem we’re told both times; just go the kiosk and print it again. I wonder what exactly will happen when two pretend Issy’s try to get on the flight. This airport’s just like all its post COVID cousins - queues and more queues, all of them moving at glacial pace. … and officials yelling angrily at everyone; do they really think that passengers are deliberately not understanding the overly complex procedures for getting anywhere at the moment, at least that’s how they feel to us. We land in Bilbao. We’ve spent several frustrating hours over the past few days trying to fill in what we were told was a mandatory health form ... read more

Today was a bus day. We left Granada at 8:00AM with a quick stop at the top of the mountain to take some pictures below. We didn’t get to see much of Granada, but I don’t think we missed much, just your typical European city. As the bus headed east, the scenery alternated between mountains and farmlands. Occasionally we could see the Mediterranean, and the seaside houses and apartments that went with beachside living. We passed the city of Benidorm, sometimes called the Miami of Spain, a seaside town with skyscrapers in the skyline. We passed the earth houses, where houses had been cut into the side of the mountain and only the façade was visible. We stopped a couple of times, once for coffee and once for lunch. We played Trip Trivia, where we were ... read more

Europe » Spain » La Rioja » Haro July 6th 2022

Haro is considered by some sources to be the wine capital of the Rioja wine area so I pick this as our next stop and a place for a day of wine tasting. I hadn't realised, but Haro is also famous for having a wine "battle" where everyone drenches themselves in wine. We've just missed this by only a week. The Rioja is also a longish drive from Barcelona so we have full day in the car heading westwards up the Ebro valley. Driving in Spain is relatively easy as most of the roads are good and surprisingly quiet. I picked up the tip of traveling mainly on “A” roads signed as AutoVia which are free and almost as good as the toll motorways. We are used to Australian style wine tasting and we know that ... read more

Today we bid a sad adios to the Costa Del Sol. Our beach resort day, and the relaxed start this morning gave us time to recharge our batteries and we were ready to hit the road! My cold is going away, and I should be fine in another day or so. Jody’s problems are probably more allergy related, Europe is old and there’s all kinds of new stuff to be allergic to. We left this morning for Alfarnatejo, a small village in the mountains of about 400 people. This is not a tourist town, there are no souvenir shops. It’s just and actual farming town where people make their living from growing olives and making olive oil. There is also a little wheat farming, and they are experimenting with pistachio and almond trees, but mainly ... read more
