June 11 - Cirauqui to Estella
We left Cirauqui at 7am after eating nectarines, walnuts and figs Tanya had bought the night before - my feet are very blistered and it was becoming more and more painful to walk so we decided to only walk to Estella - about 14km.
This was another beautiful walk through rolling farmland and vineyards - however the drawback was little shade again - few trees or shelter. Very hot again today. There were many steep climbs and descents on some eroded paths - we now realize there will be few flat stages. This heat takes a real toll.
We ran into Anna from Austria and Paul (asked to be called Pablo on the walk as this was his true birth name) from Texas. Pablo had fallen backwards onto his back - he was walking alone at the time and ended up like a turtle on his back in red clay type soil. It took him a while to manoeuvre his way out of his pack and get back onto his feet - he was really shaken up - luckily not too physically - it could have
been a lot worse. Walking alone can be dangerous especially if you were to get injured and fall off the beaten track.
We walked to to the next small town and we sat with Pablo and had fresh squeezed oj, a tortilla (egg and potato pie) washed down with my new best friends " 2 cafe con leche".
Tanya and I carried on - Pablo went into a nearby Albergue to clean up and assess the physical damage.
The rest of the walk was fairly even until Tanya spotted a 3 foot snake coiled on the path ahead . Tanya is definitely ophiophobic. The only way we could get by was for Tanya to walk on my left, holding on to my shoulders with her eyes closed until we were safely past. I was fairly certain the snake was not poisonous - we (the snake and I ) kept our eyes on each other until we were out of each other's way.
We arrived in Estella around 2pm. We met Marissa and Kathryn and we all booked rooms in the same old Hostel. Tanya and I gave our
laundry to the hostel owner - the cost was included in the 30€ we paid for our double room.
We headed down to eat - had some food - Tanya a paella, me a beer and salad ) - bibi from Belgium joined us before carrying on to the next town. We headed back to our room for another early night. We ran into the young Austrian couple - they indicated Mark and Debbie were in an Albergue in town - Tanya ran over to say hi and find out what town they were going to the next day - I could barely make it back to our room - my feet were not happy with me.
When Tanya came back she went to get our laundry - Tanya ran into one of our Spanish pilgrim room neighbours - Tanya explained to this girl the she had 4 blisters and that they were giving her grief - the Spanish girl saw the laundry women ( at least 70 years old) and explained in Spanish Tanya's predicament - before you could shake a stick the women lanced Tanya's blisters and all of mine as well
- did I say yet how caring the average Spanish person is.
Piss off of the day - feet again - they really don't want to be here and are letting me know about it.
Tip of the day - keep a roll of toilette paper in your back pack - if you get over your fear of crapping in public - as I did today - as per picture attached - it comes in handy
Blessing of the day - grandmothers everywhere
Funny event of the day - not easy to wipe one's butt with a backpack on - the pilgrims behind me were rolling in the grass with laughter
