Today we are off to the village of Guadalest which lies at the head of the Guadalest Valley, some 35 kilometres inland from where we are staying. The winding road from the coast to Guadalest is almost worth the trip on its own, passing as it does through stunning scenery. The valley is covered with woods of pine, holm oak, maple and ash and in the cultivated areas are orchards of apples, cherries, and pears, groves of olives, oranges, almonds, figs and lemons, and the local fruit, nísperos. The village economy relies almost entirely on tourism these days but from Moorish times its position at the top of a granite mountain where the Moors built their castle, rendered it almost unconquerable. Surrounded by the Aitana, Serella and Xorta mountains, it appears it was first settled by ... read more

Today we went to Cartagena. It is about a two and a half hour drive to Cartagena from where we are staying. Fortunately, the roads in Spain are good. Throughout our trip we have relied on Google Maps as our GPS, and again today it took us directly to our destination. As usual, our first stop on arrival in Cartagena was coffee. We enjoyed a coffee on the Calle Mayor in central Cartagena, a lovely walking street with some impressive architecture. Then we headed off to our principal goal, the Teatro Romano. This Roman theatre was only discovered about 20 years ago, buried beneath centuries of other buildings. It seems that the theatre suffered a deadly fire in the 2nd century BC, and was abandoned. Soon after that, it was turned into a street market, and ... read more

Today after breakfast we went into Albir and looked around the village a bit before finding a nice coffee spot. The town is very touristy with lots of restaurants, shops and grocery stores. Lots of foreign tourists walk the streets in only their beachwear, which can be quite unsightly at times! We spent the afternoon in or around the pool, as it is another hot one today! In the evening we enjoyed some delicious Thai food at a local restaurant. After dinner we strolled along the lovely beach promenade.... read more

Today we are driving north of here to the coastal town of Denia. In the centre of the city is a 17th century Renaissance style castle, on the site of an earlier Moorish fortress. Our first stop was coffee and then we set off to find the castle. Again the problem of very poor signage in Spain when trying to find historical attractions! After wandering up a few steep cobbled streets in the heat of the day we finally arrived at the castle. It is a handsome reminder of the town's historic importance when the Moors ruled this part of Spain. From Denia we headed south along a coastal road to a pretty little town called Moraira. It had a lovely beach area where we enjoyed soaking our feet. We also enjoyed a lovely lunch of ... read more

Today we are off to visit a couple who were acquaintances of ours in Costa Rica and who now live in Altea. They were originally from Calgary and two years ago the left Atenas to live in Spain. We had a leisurely coffee with them at a beachfront cafe and made plans to meet again later in the week for dinner. In the afternoon we spent time in the pool and reading. Our acquaintance Barry mentioned that on Sunday nights at a train station near here people gather for a jam session with different instruments and it usually has some pretty good music. We decided to check it out as Barry said he'd be there playing his saxophone. The music was pretty decent.... read more

Today is another hot one but we are determined to do a hike out to a lighthouse outside of Albir. It is 2.2k each way, so we head out early (for us) to try to beat some of the heat! It is a nice hike high on a paved path on cliffs above the Mediterranean. Once arriving at the lighthouse we enjoyed looking down on groups of bottlenosed dolphins splashing in the Mediterranean. So fun to watch. We also came across a mother red legged partridge and her 13 little hatchlings. We enjoyed our walk back to our vehicle and then headed for home. We spent the afternoon in and out of the pool. After dinner when the sun was setting we visited the beach and enjoyed a walk along the promenade.... read more

Today was hot, right from the time we woke up. The house does not have great ventilation and no screens on the windows! Europeans do not seem to believe in putting screens on their windows which is strange as there are flies and mosquitoes here. After breakfast we headed off to a small village not far from where we are staying, called Altea. The old town of Altea is on a hill and looks typically Spanish with its pretty, narrow cobbled streets with white houses leading up to a beautiful central square. Once we climbed up through the narrow streets we enjoyed magnificent sea and mountain views. We enjoyed the charm of the little village as we sipped our morning coffee but the heat of the day quickly sent us back home to enjoy our pool. ... read more

After a lazy start to our day we headed to the neighbouring village of Alfaz del Pi. We parked our car and headed off walking through the town. We had our morning coffee at a little cafe, but there was nothing of interest in the town so we left. Returning to Albir, we went to an open air museum built on the site of an old Roman villa. We rented an iPad type device from the caretaker which, when you pointed it at the existing remains it showed a image of what the original villa and associated Roman baths in all their glory. It was quite interesting but the heat of the day 39c sent us home to our pool for the rest of the day.... read more

Today we are celebrating 37 wonderful years of marriage. Unfortunately, we had to start our day by returning our rental car to Alicante which is over an hour away. We decided to drive the rental and our exchange vehicle to the little train station in Albir. From there we drove to Alicante where we returned our vehicle and had a coffee and yummy pastries. Then we caught the local tram back to Albir which was a great way to see the countryside. On our return to Albir train station we picked up our car and drove into Albir and visited beautiful Playa Albir. It was busy with tourists but we bought a gelato and enjoyed a lovely stroll along the beach promenade. It is 37c today so returned to the house and cooled off in the ... read more

We packed up our rental car and headed into the "newer" town of Cuenca. For breakfast we went to a funky little pastry shop on the Main Street. This place, very popular with the locals, is right out of the 1960's, with waiters who wear formal white jackets and black bow ties. We head out on the highway for the 5 hour drive to the Costa Blanca, in SE Spain. Along the way, we spot a castle on a dramatic hilltop, in Almansa, and stop for lunch. The castle is closed for repairs, but lunch is good. Eventually we reach the location of our final home exchange, El Albir. Our new home is located on a hill above the town. Albir has a Mediterranean climate which means hot summers with mild winters and very little rain. ... read more
