Watching the Weather After the brilliant weather yesterday, getting from Logrono to Najera became a real problem almost from the start. I started out in a fleece, but it began to drizzle so I changed it for my rain jacket. An hour later, I was feeling quite miserable with cold, and clearly not maintaining my body temperature very well. So time for another change and a bite to eat. The fleece went back on top, storm pants and I replaced my walking cutoff gloves with both liner and outer gloves. Other than removing the outer gloves later in the morning, I was like this until lunchtime. Even then, only the storm pants came off. This used all the classic layers that I have, so it will be interesting to see how I will cope if I ... read more

Leaving Los Arcos Today was the day to get some items in the post, so there was a period of to-ing and fro-ing to get that done. The officina de correos opened at 8.30, but did not accept credit cards. So it was back to the market square, where the cash point at the bank had run out of notes. A woman came out to let me know that she was filling the machine up, and then again when she had finished. Back down to the correos, and a pile of forms to complete. Probably about the same as would be required at home, just a little more difficult to interpret. The staff were extremely helpful, despite my limited Spanish. I left feeling that Los Arcos was clearly in the running for the most friendly town ... read more

The electronic beeping of alarms stirs me from a restless sleep. I try to bury my head under the pillow but the sound of rustling plastic bags penetrates even the stiff foam. I don’t need to check the time; after a few days on this holy path I’ve learnt that the beeping begins at 5am. I reach down through the darkness and fumble for my ear plugs which are somewhere in a side pocket of my rucksack, somewhere under the creaking metal bunk bed. I’m aided by the regular beams of head torches swinging around the room like search lights. I hate the feeling of the fluorescent yellow rubbery stubs in my earholes so rather than drifting off to sleep I lay cursing these early risers. Within half an hour I’ve admitted defeat and join the ... read more

We thought the destination we had chosen for last night’s stay was remote enough but we think we are outdoing that for tonight’s!! And the hotel we are staying in is a converted convent!!! The BBA is certainly trying to vary things up. Our hotel room here in Lleida has been so quiet and peaceful we have again slept in,this time we didn’t wake until 8am!!Perhaps it was the spa we had last night that put us in the relaxed mode as it does at home. However,no problem with rising late as breakfast is on at the hotel until midday, not that we want to be that late on the road. And what a bountiful breakfast it is too with not only the usual continental type items but also hot dishes such as bacon(well, proscuito actually) and some ... read more

Definitely a "highlight reel" day. We toured the Guggenheim Museum at 10, but did not tarry long. I have trouble finding much interest for collections of airplane ashtrays linked by a loosely arranged keychain. We then drove up into the mountains. We are by now well accustomed to using our GPS to find our way. But the GPS requires being able to locate your destination. Today, we were not only off the beaten path, but the beaten path could not even be seen from our vantage point in the mountains. Our goal was Asador Etxebarri, a restaurant known to "foodies" but otherwise obscure. It is listed several places as one of the top 50 restaurants in the world, and richly deserves that ranking. We arrived early, mostly because our tour of th Guggenheim Museum was shorter ... read more

And finally we have internet! The last few albergues (hostels) have either had extremely slow internet or one computer that everyone wanted to use. So... much has happened since the last post! On Monday we slept in Pamplona, in a decent hostel. Angi, Sarah and I got up at 7am and weren't concerned about rushing as the post office didn't open till 8.30am. Once we were ready we headed straight there, and 20 minutes later were 3.9kg lighter! Fantastic! In high spirits we found some great coffee and set off to hike 21km. We walked all the way through Pamplona into the nearby fields and started heading for the hills. We could see modern windmill-farms in the distance and the road was decent, muddy and rocky sometimes but ok. We climbed up and up, heading towards ... read more

I have been walking for several days since I last wrote. Have enjoyed wonderful mild weather and met so many lovely people along the the trail as well as so many helpfull and gentle locals from people stopping to chat from the fiels to any one you for assistance or directions. A highlight was meeting Felicias Daughter Maria, a lady who welcomed pilgrims for over 20 years just before entering entering Logroño and now since she died her daughter does the deed and supplies coffee and toas plus a stamp on your credential for a donation. Her house is quaint and colourfull with lots of flowers. I soaked my aching feet in a water fountain within our albergue patio and met by chance a few walking members from the Badajoz club I walked with back in ... read more

Are we in Spain yet? I wonder if we really are, because the last 7 days have brought us numerous signs posted on rocks, walls, and roads proclaiming "tourist, you are NOT in Spain!!". Well, we are (supposedly) out of the Basque region and now into La Rioja, in the city of Longrono. It might be as big as Pamplona, and compared to the past few nights in Puenta la Rente, Estella, and Los Arcos, it is huge. We walked 30kms today, and my feet are killing me so after siesta (gotta love a late afternoon nap after starting our walk at 615am!) we might head to a pharmacia and get some shoe inserts. The rest of my body is fine, but it´s my feet that need some TLC and hopefully I won´t be hobbling tommorrow ... read more
