Hola! I travelled to Madrid in October 2003 with the Australian Convicts. I set up the Convicts earlier in the year as a way of promoting Aussie Rules as an international sport. Our first game was in London, where we played the Sussesx Swans, one of the teams in the British Australian Rules Football League (BARFL). We had a great time in London and I was a bit saddened to leave. But Madrid was awesome! We stayed in a 4 star hotel (Hotel Preciados), which was very central. It is just off the Gran Via and withing walking distance of the Puerta del Sol. Our hosts, the Madrid Bears, were fantastic and really looked after us. We were even provided with a professionally prepared guide to Madrid's pubs and clubs, complete with ratings for drink prices ... read more

This was my first real trip by myself. I spent about five days in Madrid and managed to book my hostel over the phone speaking Spanish (reading from a phrasebook!). The hostel was eerily dark but on the square so very handy. I took day trips to Segovia and Toledo. Both are very beautiful towns.... read more

This weekend was the long awaited Las Vacas Locas (translated is means The Mad Cows) tour of Madrid...took the Friday off work and headed to Madrid where we went from a comfortable 20 deg to 35 to 40 deg.......fantastic to feel that hot again......I joined the tour for the final weekend, the guys having already been away for 8 days........and it showed. Sticking to the adage that what happens on the trip stays on the trip I really can't elaborate on specifics. What I can say about Madrid is that it is a great place......we took a city tour in an open top bus and got to see the Real Madrid soccer ground as well as many of the city's buildings etc. On the Saturday we went to see the MAD COWS play on the Madrid ... read more

I have been practicing my Spanish for a while.........and felt confident enough to go around Spain just a month after my surgery. My doctor said I drive her crazy. My surgeon said I should go ahead and celebrate life. Between those 2 medical opinions, I favored my surgeon's advice. Long Trip to Madrid From Manila With my nephew Ryll and good friend Emy in tow, we braved the long trip from manila to madrid. Left 5 pm Monday; arrived noon next day in Madrid. It was a long trip via Hongkong and Paris. And that is not counting the 3 hour wait in each airports! The Air France flights all went smoothly, and we actually enjoyed all the in-flight meals and movies. Talking about first experience in good old Madrid..........we hired a cab as soon as ... read more

DAY SEVEN It was just one of those days. There was no power in the hostel when we got up so we had to do everything by torchlight. Then we got all messed up by a strike on the trains. We bought our tickets and were told platform and time, but no train came. Everyone we asked - security guards, information desk, ticket office - all told us different things, until we finally found out about the strike! Not that anyone though to put up signs or make an announcement! Finally we got a train to Segovia at 10am. Given that its a two hour ride, and the return trains are at 2.55pm or 8.55pm, we didn't have long once we did make it to Segovia. The ride out was ok, busy and noisy with a ... read more

DAY FOUR The old part of Atocha Station is a neat classical, Victorian style building, huge with a glassed roof, full of tropical plants and misters. We had plenty of time to look round before our train to Toledo this morning. Toledo was a fascinating city. We spent our time wandering around the old town, entering through the main gate in the wall. We went to the Alcazar first, the old fort / palace, a neat building but the museum inside was mainly military with little on the history of the building and what it had been used for. Next was the Taller del Moro where we could look round three rooms of a 14th century Mudejar palace (Mudejar refers to architecture etc. built by Moorish craftsmen under Christian rule). There was some excellent carvings in ... read more

DAY ONE Late. Everything. All morning. The taxi was late picking us up. The bus was late leaving Southampton for the airport. The plane was late leaving Heathrow for Madrid. We couldn't find the hostel we were after either once we got into the centre of the old city. What a good start to the week. Still, we did find a place to stay, double room with en suite for €36 per night, what seems to be the going rate at the moment around here. Despite the early start, we headed out again straight away, walking not far to the Plaza Mayor. This is a large square surrounded by all buildings from the 17-18th century. We found ourselves coming back time and time again during our stay. There is a covered walkway all around the edge ... read more
