We arrived in Madrid not having a place to stay for the night, but we easily found a hostel and slept soundly with eight other French guests. We spent a good amount of time lounging about lazily in the many wonderful street cafes that make Madrid, and I would guess many other European cities, so great. We ate and drank and spent way too much money, but had a great time doing it. We did manage to get out and see a museum full of Picassos as well as a nice free tour of the city. We also watched a few movies and met many new friends. Our first night there we met a nice group of Polish travelers who were in town for a basketball game. We drank good beer and ate croquettas with them ... read more

Kate: Hola! Que tal? It's been a while since we did a Madrid blog, so we thought we'd update you on what we have been up to in the city, apart from teaching people to speak the lingo, obviously.... Kate and Kris try to appreciate art..... We have been increasing our knowledge of art by visiting another of Madrid's famous art museums, the Thyssen-Bornemisza. It's a private collection and contains works of art from different eras; medieval, renaissance, baroque, modern.....It's all in chronological order over three floors, the top one being the older stuff, including the religious paintings by the likes of Caravaggio, El Grego etc. that you get in the Prado museum. The middle floor has still lifes and landscapes as well as Impressionist paintings by Monet and Manet etc. The top floor is ... read more

by anna Weeks one and two in Spain have been sensational. It has felt like we have been here for forever, in a good way. The first weekend, we were lucky enough to have a Spanish colleague of David’s in town, and we met her and her sister to see a Picasso exhibition and then they took us to lunch and showed us around town a bit. Great to get a local intro! Being back at ‘school’ has been somewhat intimidating, especially when the teachers only speak Spanish with you. I know, I know, best way to learn etc, but when that includes giving instructions for a grading test we had to do first up, and the times for classes, etc, it was a little overwhelming. Week 1 went something like this: Day 1 - terrified ... read more

April 25-27 Wow am I behind! We’ve been so busy, on the move, or just plain exhausted that I haven’t had a second to get on my laptop, except to send a few quick e-mails. Now, however, Kim and I are in the Madrid airport for the next 8 hours, with no internet so I can type and reflect to my hearts content… April 25- Friday So Kim woke up and went diving with Salaka and Kathleen and I slept in until 10am. When we got up we headed to the beach and all was fine until Kim came back from her second dive…Since she’d been diving she wouldn’t be able to climb Mt. Sinai with us since you can’t go low and high so quickly w/o fear of Nitrous poisoning and decompression or whatever. So ... read more

Hallo!

April 21 - 25, 2008 MADRID, Spain Arrived here this afternnon ( Monday ) and took a short walk around the very large shopping district close to our hotel in the old center of the city. Madrid looks like a very modern, very clean, city with some of the old city architecture we expected in Europe. Spending Euros here is going to be interesting as our dollar is not too strong here. ( about $1.60 to buy a Euro ). Tuesday morning was a quiet morning and in the afternoon we took the “city tour” by "Hop on Hop Off”, open top bus. This was a beautiful spring day so it was nice to be in the outdoors. This is really the way to go when first visiting any city as it gives you a relatively ... read more

by anna and david (in italics) Resort Bilston After a week of packing up the apartment and living amongst the chaos, we headed to Ballina (home) to spend two weeks being completely spoilt by my folks. Each morning we woke to a freshly made coffee from Dad, who has taken it on himself to hone his coffee skills to mix it with the best of the baristas (and he’s succeeding, as usual), before being fed gourmet lunches and dinners from Mum’s formidable repertoire of recipes. David's mum joined us for a long weekend. We'd had a week of sunshine but unfortunately it rained the whole time Beverley was there. Still there was plenty of things to do (see photo of Mum and Bev with matching shopping bags). Needless to say, two weeks in Resort Bilston meant ... read more

Hola!!! Woche....schon langeee her :) ... read more

only having a day before the tournament after morocco and still being a little sick, i was less than thrilled for the drive. 8 of us: me, sergi, jose, mac, jordi, alberto, ana, and miguel, met at santa justa and we left in two cars. i rode in miguel´s audi with ana and sergi. we listened to a bunch of spanish music from the eighty´s and they kept asking me if i had heard any of it before but it was all totally new to me. we didn´t get to the place until about 1145 pm and we just went straight to bed. the complex was interesting. they had a bunch of fields, tenis courts, etc. and then pools, a cafeteria, and a dorm. our whole team stayed in one room with 6 bunk beds.
