My Bed in My New Room in Spain
I love the feeling of falling into bed & climbing under the covers after a long day. "Be content with what you have, rejoice in the way things are. When you realize there is nothing lacking, the whole world belongs to you." -Lao Tzu
This blog entry is entirely dedicated to acknowledging the simple pleasures in life.
More specifically, this is a compilation of the simple pleasures I have stumbled upon here in Spain as well as those I find add joy to any average day wherever I am located.
I also have a request: as you read this blog and think of the simple pleasures in your life, please commit at least one (or more...) to memory, and then add it to the comment section of this blog so that we can all remember and share in the those positive pockets of happiness that present themselves to us each and every day!
So, the first small pleasure that spawned this blog is the indescribable joy I experienced when I left my metro stop tonight and realized that I knew exactly where I was when heading home. I just knew. I have an awful sense of direction and anyone who shares this same plight (or even someone who is visiting or has moved somewhere
Pictures of People I Love
When I can't have everyone I love with me, I find photos to be the perfect daily reminder of how lucky & blessed I truly am to have so many amazing people in my life! new) can understand that this realization literally makes you want to dance. Right where you are, in the middle of the street, you want to (and actually may) do a little jig as a celebratory dance of this minor (but quite meaningful) feat.
Next: when I first moved into my new apartment my roommate told me that the outside door lock sticks. It took him, (someone I assumed to be efficient in the art of door unlocking, if for no other reason than the fact that he is a man, imbued, as I imagine, with the capacity for all things technical...) one week. It took him ONE WEEK to be able to navigate our door lock with ease. I took me one try. I considered it a sign. The magical click of the door unlocking spoke volumes to me. It said: this, is where you are meant to be. I let out a squeak of joy. Day four in a foreign country when a tricky lock unlocks you learn to never underestimate the considerable joy of small things, such as a lock turning and a door (literal and figurative) unlocking.

My Window in My New Room
Having a window and sunlight in my room is one of my simple pleasures (anyone who has ever had to go without can completely understand). new and you just know: this, is for life. You laugh at the same jokes, you finish each others thoughts. You talk about everything from food, to the economy, to the meaning of life. It is like finding a missing piece of yourself that you weren't even aware was missing until this wonderful, beautiful, exciting new addition stumbled across your path. From that point forward, you truly can't imagine what your world would be like without them.
Finding the elevator waiting for me on my floor.
Seeing a hand catch the door as I'm leaving the metro station, just before I get there, and keeping it from swinging closed in my face.
The sound of laughter. The feeling you get when a fantastic song comes on, whether you are in the car, in your home, or on your mp3 player when you are walking home.
A great meal that once consumed provides the same feeling as a warm hug from someone you love.
When you nail an interview (as happened to me just this week) and you immediately feel as if you could conquer the world and sing on Broadway.
Finding something in just
My Glorious New Closet
It is the best feeling having space for all of my possessions to live in organized harmony. your size that fits you like it was made for you at a price that makes you feel like you are stealing it.
The feeling you get at the end of the day when you can peel off your shoes (in varying degrees of uncomfortableness) and let your feet go free.
A nice long hot shower.
A great cup of coffee/tea/hot cocoa (amplified if shared with a great friend over great conversation).
The blissful feeling when you wake up and realize you have no where to be, roll over, pull the covers up over your head, and go back to sleep.
A hug.
Finding: anything. A new apartment, a new job, a great local bar, that place that sells exactly the thing you were looking for (for what seemed like forever). A new boyfriend, friend, a missing item, that fantastic restaurant that you now go to every weekend.
A letter/email/phone call/conversation with someone who you were just thinking about that you have been longing to speak to.
Love. Family. Sunshine. A cool breeze on a hot day. When you have the chance to spend time with people you love, at a barbecue
My Jewelry
As anyone who knows me knows, jewelry is DEFINITELY one of my happiest simple pleasures (along with my shoes)! or a party, and have no where else you have to (or want to) be.
Finding money on the street (but not enough to worry that someone else is missing it).
Meeting with someone and arriving at the exact same time (so no one is waiting).
Getting to the metro station just as the train arrives (love that one).
For me, right now, realizing beyond a shadow of a doubt that I am exactly where I am supposed to be.
And of course, I look forward to the simple pleasure of reading your simple pleasure(s)!
