El Rastro
The market Well, I couldn’t fall asleep until 3am this morning…and then Jasmine and I had planned on leaving the apartment at 8 so that we could get to the market early, but last night, I never heard Jasmine come in (she went out with Virginia). Once I got ready to leave, I went to Jasmine’s room to see if she was there. She was but she said that she had texted me last night telling me we weren’t leaving until 10am to go to the market - but I didn’t get it because I LOST MY PHONE!!!! Oh my gosh…I have the worst luck here!!! But the only thing I could think was that it was at J&J’s Café. So I came back to my room and tried to work a little more on essays for my application. At 10, we left for the market “El Rastro.” The market was similar to other outdoor markets I have been to. I kind of reminded me of the market in Kenya, but there were tables and concrete…and no haggling…I definitely found some things that I want to buy, but I didn’t have any money today, but the market is every Sunday morning. We left
From Above
There were a couple of levels in the market. So I was able to look down and see everything below a little better. Can you tell how crowded it was?? the market at 1pm to head back home to meet Charo, Bienvenido, and MaryBeth for lunch again - apparently they come every Sunday. Charo is so cute!! She started preparing our meal last night, and when I went to the kitchen around 9am, she was already preparing lunch! She already had set the table with her nicer dishes and got all the dessert and coffee dishes ready. Lunch today was really good - better than last week. We had a pumpkin soup (hot soup this time), it wasn’t bad because it really didn’t have much flavor. Then the main course was what I thought was chicken (but she said it was turkey) with a really good sauce and the same salad we had last week. Dessert was the same melon but with chocolate ice cream this time. At the end of the meal, we had some coffee. When Charo asked if we wanted any, she said, “Would you like any coffee” and her son got onto her for speaking English, so she sat down in her chair and acted like a student and said, “…café….con….lech-e” Like I said, she’s so cute. She’s so silly. After lunch Jasmine called J&J’s and
Shopping...with no money :(
Finally got a pic with me in it! sure enough, they found my phone! So that was good news. But somehow we got on the topic that I will be having my interview with the zoo on Wednesday and they asked to see my resume that I had written in Spanish. Little did I know that they were going to help me rewrite the entire thing. It was really sweet of them, but it took forever and it was so hard trying to explain to them what some of the phrases I had written meant. Finally we finished and Bienvenido and MaryBeth left. Jasmine and I decided to go to J&J’s to get my phone and use the internet. When we got there, we found out we’re not supposed to use their outlets, but both our computers were going to die soon. So we ordered some coffee then hid in the basement, secretly stealing the electricity and quickly unplugging our computers every time we heard someone coming down the stairs. Virginia met up with us there. I tried talking to Ray, but I guess the football game was more interesting because he didn’t seem very interested in talking to me, and that’s really the only reason I got
The fire truck!
I just heard the fire truck coming down the stret adn I happen to have my camera out, so I took a pic...The firemen were all staring at me. online. So I just got offline and started looking at the books they have. I found Jurassic Park in Spanish but rewritten for kids - it’s shorter and easier to read and probably less detailed, so I bought it because I think it will help me with my Spanish, plus it’s another Michael Crichton book I can add to my collection! I’m pretty excited to read it! Then I just came back home and planned out the rest of my time here! Looks like I’m going to be very busy, and I’m going to really have to stick to my planner if I want to get everything in and not forget anything! Tomorrow I need to look into making train and plane reservations. Now, I’m going to bed. I need sleep.
