Beautiful sunny day in Vilanova to celebrate our 25th wedding anniversary. A little cooler with a nice breeze. Following a relaxing breakfast we took a nice walk (about 15 minutes) down to the beach of Vilanova. Our first stop before we parked ourselves on the sandy beach was to enjoy a cold mojito under the breezy shade of the overhead pergola with sail shades on the beach. Made our way to two nice lounge chairs and an umbrella not wanting to get sunburned. Perfect! We enjoyed swimming in the Mediterranean Sea as it was warm and our water was nice and shallow with a sand bar part way out into the waves. Ideal. Wayne and I dipped in and out of the water several times and enjoyed every moment. A few topless ladies gave Wayne a ... read more

Today was a busy day with so much going on and so much to see. We went out after breakfast to find the market in town. There was a festive feeling in the air as we could hear music. People were walking in all directions with their shopping in bags. As we both forgot to pack swimsuits we made a stop into a sporting store to find one for both of us. Success! Then onward to see more of this interesting town. We just kept walking until we came to the Mercado Central (Central Market) where we saw all sorts of interesting stuff for sale - lots of fish, lobster, squid, ? octopus and all manner of veggies and meat. Many pork ? legs hanging up and ready for a slice to be sold. All of ... read more

Our time with Ivan was over, so we moved a short distance north of Calafell to our new lodgings at The Gatell Hotel in Vilanova. Our sweet host Ivan kindly drove us right to the door with our bags as he works in Vilanova. This worked out perfectly for us. A nice little hotel with a pretty bar and restaurant in the lobby area. Our ladies at the front desk are very helpful and Sweet. Rooms are simple but clean and we are blessed with A/C and overhead ceiling fans. We settled in and took a breather (quick nap) and then off to explore the area. Off to the Rambla Principal - pedestrians only Main Street with many shops and open air cafes. This is where the action is. Lots to see and do. Our weather ... read more

It's been a beautiful 10 days easing into Spain by spending it here in this beautiful unhurried Spanish town on the ocean. The people here have been so kind and patient with our bumbling Spanish, and if they didn't speak English, they did their best to meet us half way and somehow communication happened. Nobody was rude or even indifferent. People here seem to enjoy life quite well, work as much as they want too, spend time with friends and family more than we do in the States. The ease of life is matched by the soft Mediterranean weather, which is I remember it, 55 - 60 every day with sunshine. It's rained (lightly) once in 10 days. I talked with my sister for the first time since we came to Europe and all is well ... read more

We met Mark for lunch at the Cafe de les Arts on the seafront. He was quiet and in-between car appointments and delivery appointments. He didn't stay long and I would suspect really didn't want to be there. I have been battling a upper-repertory cold and congestion and was rather dull myself. Larry Cusack held up such of the talk. When the sun moved behind the palm tree and Mark took his leave to get his delivery, it got cool, so we finished out coffee con leech and then headed out into the sun to the beach. The weather was perfect in the direct sun, and we walked south from the center of town on the water and the back to town thought a higher-end apartment area which is south of the town center. We have ... read more

Day # 7 Larry and I went out for a long walk around 2 PM - 4:30 PM. The shops here were basically closed for siesta but we did find a "Chinese store" which was open and had a electrical adapter we wanted. The weather was beautiful and sunny and yet it was cool when you moved in to the shadows. We walked to the edge of town and back, and had a 2 beers (4.40 euro or $4.84) at and outside cafe across from the City Hall in the town governmental square. We're own the hunt for postcard stamps today. Our host Mark told us where the post-office is and how to address the cards to EEUU (United States) Well, we find that we won't be likely to be mailing out postcards. It's a multi-step ... read more

Day # 3 Friday morning March 4th, 2016 I'm a man who rarely is sick so I find that when I have a cold or a sinus condition that causes me to produce copious amounts of mucus, my brain gets foggy and I have a hard time focusing on anything except where the nearest handkerchief could be found. Luckily I brought many hankies with me and we have a washer dryer in this apartment so I can keep them clean. My sinus condition is getting better and I slept well. Larry called me to lookout the bedroom window and while I have been typing this, and outdoor market is being set up in the street one story below. I have to go get some oranges! The tomatoes we had last evening were the freshest and probably ... read more

Day #2 I'm flighting Jet Lag and an airborne-acquired sinus condition but was able to go out for coffee and found the grocery store late this afternoon. It's just around the corner and less than a 3 minute walk. Sweet! Larry and I walked from the Mediterranean about 2 miles inland down the main shopping street of this surprising Spanish town of 66,000. Watching the ebb and flow of people in the street was very interesting. We were in a coffee shop at 4:30 and by the time we walked back at 5:00 the street filled up with people going home from work and children getting out of the schools. Our limited Spanish came in handy in the grocery store when trying to distinguish products and ingredients. I though we did fairly well and now we ... read more

I have to hand it to American Airlines and their Partner Iberia Airlines, they got us to Spain 15 minutes EARLY! The long Transatlantic Leg of the trip from Chicago to Madrid on Iberia was so spacious and pleasant, even though it took 8 hours. The plane was only about half full, and the food was delicious. Our friend Mark Tuilett was so kind to pick us up in Barcelona and bring us to his Holiday rental in Vilanova i la Geltru. We were so tired we crashed after seeing the Med. from Mark's 7th Floor rooftop. Blue Blue Blue just like I remembered. More to follow...... read more
