I've got a little behind with my blog but here it is at last, only 8 days later. Trying to catch up with myself now that we are home again ! Got ourselves out and about at a reasonable time and for once used the campsite showers. Well we did use them once on the last site but mine was cold so we've showered in the van every other time. The shower block here though is excellent and heated too. That is pretty important as though the sky is reasonably clear there is a rather vicious cold wind which means sitting outside is not an option and neither are cold showers. We arranged a taxi at reception which took us to the carhire place in Roses. Taxi was double the price of any we used for ... read more

Issy's cold‘s no better. I leave her to sleep while I wander north along the seafront path that runs in front of the apartment. I'm joined by a small throng of people who look like they’ve probably retired here, out for their early morning strolls. It seems we’re not too far from Canyelles Cove, with its nice sandy beach, and a good supply of restaurants. We’ve spent a long time making the long trek into Roses and back for dinner the last two nights, and whilst I'm sure this is very good for our health, I think I'd rather follow a large plate of patatas bravas and a few cervezas with a short stroll than a trek halfway across Spain. I think I know where we'll be eating tonight, and probably the night after as well. ... read more

What a troubled, troubled man!! Genius or Freak - that is totally up to you. However, having learned a tiny bit about his life, we can now see where some of his angst ridden work/genius began. I won't even try to tell you about his life but the two facts that resonated with me were: 1. His older brother died as a child and Salvador was given his name. Fancy living with that. 2. He never returned to the home he and his wife, Gala, shared after her death perhaps indicating a deep, deep love. The home we visited was the one he set up with Gala by buying a series of fishing huts and joining them together at Portligat. Salvador's family used to hoIiday in nearby Cadaques but, following an argument with his father, he ... read more

Had a really lovely day today. Kisbee was raring to go up the through the rocky hills above the coast and through the Cap de Creus national park. The road was windy, the views pretty spectacular though there are not too many places to stop to admire them as there are quite a lot of almost hairpin bends and most are on a steep incline. This is wild countryside, very rocky and mainly uncultivated though nearer to Cadaques we found vineyards and olive groves which had been carved and terraced out of the rocky terrain. Kisbee did us proud and didn’t issue a word of complaint all 11 miles it took to get us up to the top of the peninsula and then dropping down to the coast at the sensational white seaside town of Cadaques. ... read more

It's not often that a place simply takes your breath away but that's exactly how we felt about Cadaqués. This was to be our base for exploring the Dali Triangle (see the next blog!) and we were so pleased we hadn't chosen the larger town of Roses. We had stopped there on the way and had a short walk around. It's beaches were windswept and it really had the feel of an out of season resort waiting for something exciting to happen. Maybe once it is full of life it is a different place but in total contrast, Cadaqués was exactly what we had hoped it would be. Driving on the sinuous roads across the rocky hills to get there was quite an experience too, but it provided some incredible views. Our choice of hotel, the ... read more

Driving the too-narrow winding road as if in the mirror Sea mist rolling over rooftops Dark roast almonds and juicy fat raisins from a market stall A midnight pasteing braying donkey waking the dogs The laughter of bronze bellied children playing in boats The heat of the tiles in Dalí and Gala's garden Fast noisy motorscooters in narrow white lanes Colour so intense you could taste it Sea-fresh sardines and mussels and deep red tomato salad Billowing proud Catalan flags The slap of sandalled dancing feet in the Platje Swimming bouyed in the floataceous Mediterranean Surrealistic rock formations at Cap de Creus Surprise icy Cerveza sin Gluten on the little beach A whitewashed room whose walls need no pictures This is Dave and Lou's Cadaques dreaming.... read more

Dropped off Lynn and Mike at 8:00 for their 10:00 flight to US. It was a good dry run for us. Now we would know where to go for our flight on Friday. We headed off for several days exploring Catalonia. You see "Catalonia is NOT Spain" spray painted all over, signs are in two languages and people speak differently. Our plan was to follow the expressway along the coast and bypass Barcelona, but somehow we ended up going right thru the middle, but to our surprise it wasn't as bad as one would expect...(for me at least, I think Ruth heard a few choice words). Ruth claims I behave differently when we don't have other passengers. The coast is as you might expect; a series of industrial and resort communities..until we reached Tossa de Mar, ... read more

Why not… It’s just over the border! After an hour or so windy drive we came to a little Spanish seaside village. No bargains to be had here I’m afraid, the shops were expensive and the menus priced as per France but our lunch was delicious. French food so far hasn’t lived up to expectation. Out of the wind the sun is scorching so we found a little rocky alcove to have a little time in the sun. ... read more

I think I will begin my blogging about Europe with a warning: It could be FAR more boring than Africa! Consider yourselves warned! We got into Barcelona really late one night but still managed to rent ourselves a car and find our hotel without asking anyone for help! Of course there were not very many people to ask on a Barcelona highway at 1 am! We had not eaten anything since our wonderful pizza lunch in Marrakech but of course nothing was open at that hour. The hotel desk clerk suggested we go to the truck stop next to the hotel! This is where I got to try out my great Spanish for the first time. We would like some "Pringles verde" please! That's right, we had sour cream and onion Pringles, peanut M&M's and leftover ... read more
