After spending two more weeks in Barcelona I today moved on to Greece. The last two weeks were full of good times and good people. I am sad to be leaving what I consider one of the best cities in the world, but at the same time ready to move in my travels because in a way I wasn't really traveling much in Barcelona. Rather I was getting back in a routine of life. Working every morning at the hostel for 3-4 hours to get free rent, making a big lunch after working, running and reading, and going out at night for drinks with friends.
That is not to say I didn't do other things. I went to a number of new museums like the Olympic one which inspired me to continue training hard for running. I couldn't help but be happy the whole time because in the beginning they had a picture of one of my personal heroes, Emil Zatopek. I also went to the Caixa forum, a free museum near the palace that continually has free and new exhibitions. They had some really amazing modern artist and also some Dali and Picasso. I even was able to watch a random old movie from the 50s in one of the rooms. My favorite museum though had to be the World Press Photo Exhibition. It had some really striking photos, many being really unsettling because they show how much violence there is in the world right now. The exhibition shows the best journalistic photos of 2009. The room was really dark where the photos were in and hot which added to the strange feeling I got from looking at the photos. It made me want to get better at my photography skills so that is my new goal right now. I am going to take the time to research and practice photography on the rest of the trip.
One of my favorite activities to do every day was to wait until around 5 in the evening to begin my run. The reason for this was that I could either run to Montijuic or Parc Guell to check out the sunset over the hills. Even after a bad day this always made me feel better and made me truly fall in love with the city.
Nightlife is a very integral part of my stay in Barcelona. Staying up late starts with a late dinner and continues with after dinner drinks followed by either more drinks or going out dancing which I hardly did considering my small budget and lack of dancing skills. One of the local haunts was the Palace bar near the hostel where I knew I could always find somebody I knew. 2 euro pints and laid back atmosphere made it an almost daily ritual. Other times hanging out in the hostel common room was a good palce to be which you could usually find cool people to hang out with and cheap drinks from the grovery store.
I will miss Barcelona a lot and especially all the people I was able to meet there.
