My little travel alarm begins to play it's irritating high pitched melody. Shit, I fell asleep. Of course I knew I was going to fall asleep, otherwise I wouldn't have set the alarm. But it's 4:00 and I have a night train to catch at the insane hour of 5:00. Too late to stay up for and too early to be waking up. So I compromised, drinking too many cans of cheap lager and finally passing out around 1:00. Not such a good move. A slight hangover is knocking on the door and I have had nowhere near enough sleep. I check the shower. It's cold. I don't bother. I haphazardly search the room for forgotten items of clothing, shoulder my bag (which seems unbearably heavy after only two hours sleep) and step out into the ... read more

Hey guys! I hope that yall are doing well! Thank you for your comments, Ayrica, Acacia, Jade and Tasha (I think that is everyone). I really enjoy reading them! It's great to hear from yall! This past weekend was a really fun one! The other 3 Americans and I went to Salamanca which is a city/town a little bigger than Avila. It took approximately an hour to get there by train. The weather was perfect to spend the day walking around. I liked Salamanca a lot better than I like Avila when it comes to walking around and things to do. There are a lot more people of all ages there. The University of Salamanca is the oldest university in Spain founded in the 12th Century. So there were a lot more people my age there, ... read more

Sarah Farber and I are now in beautiful Salamanca...we arrived yesterday afternoon via bus from Oviedo. Blair and Alyssa journeyed off to Madrid for the next two days and tomorrow we will reunite in Toledo, which is a Midevil town just southwest of Madrid. Salamanca is really an amazing town, it is full of so much history, I really don´t even know how to describe it. The university here, which used to be considered one of the four lights of the world along with Oxford was built in 1219 or something crazy like that. There is such a deep history of the Catholic religion here as well. The most impressive thing of all though is the architecture...it is called plateresque (spelling?) and it is so incredibly intricate and detailed, it is hard to fathom how long ... read more

Melissa and I are in Salamanca, a great college town where Spain´s oldest University is and it is making me want to be in College again. The city is so alive with culture and young, idealistic college kids, its great. We got in yesterday from Oveido and had to search pretty hard for a hostel...everything was booked for the weekend...this place is bustling with students and visitors and its easy to see why...ITS BEAUTIFUL...the University buildings and Cathedrals are all made of sandstone (knowledge thanks to my geologist companion :)) and at night they are all lit up and it looks amazing. Plaza Mayor is the center of the city and it seems to always be FULL of people. Mel and I just finished having drinks on the Plaza, just sitting and soaking up the sun ... read more

Hey guys! This weekend was an amazing weekend! The weather was perfect...about 60-65 degrees and sunny! It was a great weekend to be outside and travel which is what I did. Saturday we went to Salamanca which is about an hour train ride northwest of Avila. It was a really cool city/town. It's my favorite place so far since I've been here (out of Avila and Madrid). The University of Salamanca is the oldest university in Spain. It was founded in the 12th century. So there were a ton of people from all over there. I heard a lot of English (I never hear it on the streets in Avila). There were also a lot more people my age. In Avila, the majority of the people are older, younger kids, and middle age adults. The people ... read more

Buenas noches! This is officially the first night I've stayed in this entire week (and it's Saturday...how ironic). But, I'm feeling a little tired and I want to wake up early for mass at the Catedral de Toledo in the morning. This has been quite a fun couple of days. On Thursday night I finally gave the nightlife of Toledo a try and spent the WHOLE NIGHT (until 7am) hanging at La Bove for sangria and then dancing the night away with some of the Puerto Ricans and Don Juan (my fellow party-going domer) at the Circulo del Arte (a club in an old church) and Ciclo (or something like that). Both were lots of fun and I think that my newest favorite form of exercize is discotecas. :) I was up late enough to take ... read more

So I woke up this morning at 7:00, to leave by 7:30, so we get to the train station by 8:00 for an 8:45 train ride. It was a 2 hour ride so I got to sleep a bit, but it was uncomfortable. So my suitemates, this girl named Jenny, and I went to Salamanca. When we got there, we went straight to the old Plaza Mayor and got some breakfast. Because I don't drink coffee, I'm always getting Hot Chocolate, which is no shame. It so good! It's actual melted chocolate!! I'm sure it's not the best for my health, but you only live once, right? So yeah, then we walked around town. It was cold and we didn't want to spend a lot of money so we looked at a lot of architecture. You ... read more

Apparently Spain doesn’t seem to believe in school. This Tuesday and Thursday are holidays, so the students decided to vote to have a “puente” or “bridge,” as in a 10-day weekend! A couple friends and I had planned on renting a car and road-tripping around Spain, but by Sunday morning we still hadn’t convinced a homeless man to let us use him (yeah…you have to be 21…and I thought I was a grown-up here…), so we hopped on a train to Salamanca, home of the oldest university town in Spain. 9:30pm-4:30am: Horribly uncomfortable and cramped bus ride. 4:30am: Here we are Salamanca! Where are you? Of course we had no plans and not even the bus station was open to provide us with shelter. 4:35am: Our first roof! Okay, it might have been inside of one ... read more
