That is the one word that comes to mind when I want to try to describe San Sebastian. We pulled in via bus around 3 in the afternoon yesterday...San Sebastian is a smaller town, about 180,000 people, nestled against small mountains that tower over the Cantabrian Sea...our hostel is amazing, a small historic house owned by VIrginia who is one of the most welcoming and comforting women we´ve met thus far...feels like home, comfy beds, lots of little nooks and crannies to journal, balconies overlooking a school yard where spanish children are laughing and playing football and raquetbal...when we arrived it was raining. IN fact one of my favorite things about yesterday was falling asleep to the rhythm of the rain, reminded me of the Pacific Northwest. THis morning we woke up to completely blue skies...Blair, ... read more

It's a typically English trait to ascribe intentions to the weather ("It's threatening to rain" etc.) but yesterday it really did seem to be out to get me... I'd got up late after carnival night (of which more later) and after breakfast decided to take a walk around the sweep of San Sebastian's (Donostia in Basque) bay with the ultimate intention of taking the funicular to the top of the headland on the western side. It wasn't a particularly inspiring day, in fact it was probably the worst of winter weather - the sort of grey, windless, drizzly conditions that hang around for days. The rain knew exactly what it was doing, as soon as I got within a 100yds of the funicular it picked up enough to put me off the idea. Instead I decided ... read more

Hello Reader. The trip up to San Sebastian, a city near the French Boarder on the Northern coast of Spain, was to take eight hours by bus. Mike slept most of the way, I was up for a while. We arrived at seven in the morning and realized that we had no idea where to go. We had made reservations at a hostel called 'Olga's Place' but had not printed out any directions or anything. Luckily we found a blonde girl named Jess from Australia looking for the same hostel so we meandered our way alongside the river and found it. Raphael, partial owner (along with Olga who was out of town) showed the three of us into the hostel. Even though it was so early, he let us sleep right away and we woke up ... read more

That means I LOVE SPAIN!!! You all know I have a weakness for all things Latin!! As much as I was loving Barcelona, I decided that if i have any hope of seeing all the places I want to in Spain, then I better get cracking. So I took the night train to San Sebastian with these two crazy girls I met on my bike tour. Yet another interesting evening on the train. We didnt get the 6 bunk beds per room, but instead we got 6 chairs that face each other (3 on each side) that recline into 3 beds. However, we were only reserved for one seat each. So you only get a bed if there is no one sitting across from you. so we got in the three beds that were all basically ... read more

After arriving in Valladolid by Ryanair from Brussels we got our rented car for a week. To see some of the Provence NAVARRA After an easy three hours driving on the highway we arrived in Tudela, a small city on the pelgrim route to Santiago de Compostella. Tudela is one of those typical spanish places, but just half an hour away you have the feeling of finding yourself walking on the moon in 'Las Barnedas Reales'. Several movies are shot here like:........ The provence of Navarra is know for its many kingdoms. The small towns in the region all have a castle and city walls. We walked the famous route from the cathedral to the pamplona stadion (as they do during the famous bull running week). We felt the great spanish athmosfpere of having some tapas ... read more

well finally left barcelona, how is was sad to say goodbye, but i will be back since i fly out of there at the end of the month to cause more mayhem!! so the last few nights in barcelona i tried to take it easy, just a few beers and chilling in the square outside of the hostel. the last night i was there we went to a few clubs and ended up at this castle where this super famous dj was playing, it was awesome... ended up getting home at around 830am and then packing and heading to the train station. bought my ticket to san sebastian and waited for around an hour or so before i left. the only available seats were in the smoking section which is was a little sketchy about but ... read more

only had 2 nights in madrid but managed to fit quite a lot in. had great fun. i was a bit wary of madrid as i had been warned that it wasn't a very attractive city and the best place was the train station. i don't agree at all. madrid is really a beautiful place with magnificent architecture and wide paved streets. i really liked the city. i wish i had a bit more time there, but oh well. i got there on tuesday night and went out on the town. had a great time with the girls that we've been hanging out with for about 2 weeks who had arrived in madrid a few days before us. wednesday i went sightseeing on my own. went to the palace and wandered around the streets. palace was ... read more

Egg # 2 Hi-de-hi! (ho-de-ho)……. Booze / Bikes / Harbours……… Mr McCabe is correct – they don’t go too well together – and here’s the story: First night in San Sebastian and we were out for a nice leisurely stroll along the sea front promenade known as La Concha. T’was a beautiful evening, air was breezy, sea was kind-of-a choppy, sun was setting and there was a lovely golden light bouncing off all the buildings and waves. As we were heading toward the old quarter, we noticed that there was a free bike rental stall in operation, as part of ‘Mobility Europe’ week. Great stuff – lots of folk borrowing big mountain bikes and having a cycle along the coastal bike tracks – all free gratis, lots of fun, mad healthy etc…. About 200 metres along ... read more

Egg No. 1 here. The title of this blog is as far as my understanding of Euskara extends I'm afraid - I think it means "Good morning, San Sebastian!" in Basque - but it may not, so my apologies to the vast swathes of Basques who - I'm sure - read this blog. Either way it makes little difference since, by the time we managed to find our way out of Pamplona towards the Basque Country it was very much no longer morning at all. Since most visitors to Pamplona are chased out of town by a herd of bulls, maybe the town council there have decided that, really, there's no need for road signs at all. It only took us about an hour of trying out every road in Pamplona - between the near-death experience ... read more

Problem 1: Gigantic Basque Festival leaves no vacancies. Solution: Store items in train station for 3 euros (what a deal!) and plan to sleep on the beach. Problem 2: It rains 15 times per day in San Sebastain (rain jackets currently in locker). Solution: Withstanding weather, and still having fun... i.e. hiking to Jesus statue on top of mountain, eating yummy necterines, meat, cheese, and baguette on the beach. Problem 3: No shower in 3 days, beginning to take effect. Solution: Get in ocean and take brain freezing cold shower on the beach. ##Time period of no problems: We eat tapas, drink wine, and watch fireworks... Epa! Problem 4: Canadians named Chris Solution: Do not leave items with an over friendly Canadian´s locker (who speaks HORRIBLE spanish) to save 3 Euros because he will get annoying ... read more
