Hola folks, This is an update from our last 9 days in Tarifa, South Spain. For those of you who don’t know Tarifa is the mecca for windsurfing and kitesurfing as both the headlands from Spain and Morocco (only 14km away) create a funnel for the wind to howl through. This has been ‘THE place to be’ for windsurfers for the last 25years and we meet plenty of men in their late 50s who have been visiting every summer. There are generally two types of wind directions in Tarifa Levante and Poinente. We had a two days of Levante, Dan got grumpy as even though it meant putting up his 9m kite (small one), the ocean was very choppy (can’t go fast, pull jumps and you get choppy water in your face). Also having about 100 ... read more

Tarifa is a sleepy town known for kite and wind surfing. Near the impressive harbor is a crumbling old castle, Castillo de Guzman, which was boarded up tight for renovations. Yet, from its top plaza we could see the coast of North Africa, some 8.5 miles away. Because of the narrow strait, Tarifa is a popular spot for whale and dolphin watching. After exploring Tarifa, we drove west along the Spanish coast and then inland a tad to the US Navy base town of Rota. The streets of Rota are lined with lovely stucco homes with walled courtyards out front. Our hotel had a bit of beachfront but the waves of the Atlantic were not impressive, perhaps due to low tide. The next day, we headed to Cadiz, on the coast. This busy city juts out ... read more

Hi and Feliz Ano Neuvo to you all. First of all thank you for all the Christmas and New Year messages, either by e-card, email, blog comments, text or phone call it was very nice to receive so many. The plan was to stay over in Gibraltar at Christmas but it didn't quite work out. We drove around the southern tip of Spain on 23rd Dec along the scenic coastal route out past Tarifa and over the hills towards Gibraltar. The first view of the rock is from the hills up above Algeciras looking across the bay and it really is quite an impressive site. The rock juts out from the bay and is attached to Spain by only a thin strip of flat land giving the impression that the rock rises like an island out ... read more

Hi all, I hope you all enjoyed the snow! Were back on the road again after our Algarve holiday but first let me finish off the last few days in Portugal and my families delay saga. My family couldn't fly home on Sat 4th Dec because of the snow at Doncaster airport and the ATC strike in Spain so they were put up by Easyjet in a 4 star hotel on the marina at Villamoura with full board not all inclusive. They were told to stay a week (not that bad really), but eventually took a flight to Newcastle on 9th Dec having had an extra 5 days holiday, so it didn't work out too bad for them. We stayed around with them until the Wednesday by wild camping just around the corner from their hotel ... read more

I am in the midst of the preparatory stages for Morocco while also sitting in the reflection stages of Spain and I only have one day to complete both. It is taking everything I have to not pick up my travel book on Morocco and start getting ready, but I made a rule that I cannot move on to the next country until my last is complete. That means that the blog is finished, I have reviewed all the restaurants I ate at, recorded all my expenses and completed my notes. To be honest, I cannot believe that port number one is finished. A little over a year ago I had just sent in my application for this program and I was awaiting my acceptance and now in what seems like way less than a year ... read more

Well, that was the theory, anyway (Tim and Sue) We've arrived in Vejer de la Frontera where Sue's house in Spain is and where we will be staying for the next couple of weeks. It's a great little town a short drive from the coast. It looks really pretty perched on the hill - it's won prettiest village in Spain - everything painted white and looking picturesque. Sue's house is situated with a view down to the sea from the hill it's on and you can just about make out North Africa through the haze. The weather is fantastic - it's 28 degrees C in the shade, fairly dry heat but the breeze that the area is famous for really makes it quite pleasant. Mind you, siestas are a required practice. It's a fairly big town ... read more

Very good trip when visiting my god friend Anders in Cibraltar At Cibraltar we saw the cliff that had been used to defend The Strait of Gibraltar for several centuries. The Strait of Gibraltar connnects the Atlantic with the Mediterranean Sea. Inside the cliff there is a great tunnel system where cannons was used through small holes in the wall. In addition the cliff has a opera hall inside and on top of it many monkeys are to be seen. A fun thing about Cibraltar is that you have to cross the runway of the airport to get into town, when you cross the border from Spain. This means that sometimes you must wait for a plane pass. Another fun thing about Cibraltar is levante. Levante is when a cloud is placed above Cibraltar while the ... read more

Tarifa and Gibraltar day 6-7 (July 16- July 17) We took taxis again to the bus station to avoid the peak hour on the local bus, which I‘m sure the locals would agree was a good idea as 12 people with packs and wheelie bags take up a lot of room. It was then a comfortable three hour bus to Tarifa, which is a beach side town within sight of Morocco. We dropped our luggage and then caught local bus to Gibraltar. It was a walk to cross the border which was pretty straight forward, and then we walked to the town centre, crossing the airstrip on the way. We stopped to have an English pub late lunch (very fresh calamari). It was a hot day, so we decided to catch the cable car to the ... read more

I arrived in Tarifa on Sunday minus my camera cord. So, photos might be difficult to post regularly, until I get home. The beach here is fabulous. Most visitors are here to windsurf or kite surf, as there is a constant breeze (called Levante when coming from the east and Poniente from the west). Africa looms across the Strait of Gibraltar, just 14KM from here. I´ve met a great group of people here and a couple of them will likely cross with me to Tangiers.... read more

And welcome to the lovely little seaside town of Tarifa, the most southern town in mainland Europe… and from what I was tell, also the windiest! From the minute you step out of the bus you soon realise that it’s time to hang onto your hat and step up the walking pace a little. Tarifa is a great little seaside town and weather is also pretty nice if you don’t mind a bit of wind. Coming from wet and windy Gippsland back home myself, I’ve had my fair share of windy days before so it didn’t really bother me. In fact wind with sun is kind of a nice change after you’ve spent 5 months in hot humid Asia with no wind. Tarifa also happens to be one of the kite boarding capitals of the world ... read more
