I had a wonderful weekend! Friday I caught a bus with three other girls to Tarifa (the southern most point of Spain) and got off about 22 km early at a crossroad. We hiked up this highway until we reached Bolonia, a small beach town of about 200 that gets crazy during the summer-full of wind and kite surfers. It was definately one of the windiest places I´ve ever been! The first day it was a bit overcast and cold due to the wind, but we just chilled around some cow patties, enjoying the amazing sky, rocks, shells, etc.

Saturday and Sunday were spent hiking up the beach and camping around the nearby pine tree covered dunes (so hard to hike on with packs!!!!), which actually reminded me a ton of Michigan. Oooh, we saw two baby goats that had just been born! They were tiny and still wet and couldn´t walk yet and hadn´t found their mom´s tits yet. It was super cool! And there was an awesome lighthouse we came across. We spent a good amount of time one day on a secluded beach where we skinny dipped mid-day. The water was amazing, the
waves huge, and there was absolutely no one around. Our last night we got caught in a huge super windy thunderstorm with a large piece of holy plastic that we had taken from a construction site earlier and a short piece of twine that we´d found on the beach earlier. We constructed a makeshift tarp after our fire had been doused by the rain and I think it only fell on us...twice. Luckily though, we managed to stay more or less dry and definately had a ton of fun!

We thought it fitting to end the last bit of our trip by hitching a ride to Tarifa, where we ran into some of our friends who´d been to Morocco for the weekend and gotten stuck in Tarifa for the day. Speaking of...Africa! We clearly knew where we were but one day as we were walking along the beach we saw lights in the distance and were wondering about what kind of big boats or, perhaps, islands, they could be coming from, when I realized that I was looking at Africa!!!!? Duh! But yeah, it was cool.

So yeah, that was long, but this weekend was really great. It was absolutely lovely and refreshing to be outside again, hiking and camping. And to spend some time in relative solitude--we had a bunch of fun but spent a lot of time in silence, which was really nice and something I haven´t done for quite awhile.

Monday night was Holloween and one of the best I´ve had in awhile. Some people dress up, but mostly foreigners. I didn´t because I had just gotten back from the beach. However, I did go see a Sevillan cover band of the Beatles at an Irish pub!!! How random?! They´re actually pretty famous all around Spain. It was great though because there were mostly Spaniards there who knew all of the words and we clearly knew all of the words (Beatles-duh!) so we were just jumping around singing at the top of our lungs for 3 hours (such a long
concert!) It was really really great though.

Pictures soon, I promise!

When I saw the title of your posting, I expected a story about luncheon meat named Oscar. That concert sounds great. What a combination of cultures! Keep 'em comin' Love, Sheila
